Um, how did you get the paint to change colors, or is it paint, or does it bot change at all and just looks like it does? This is megacool. Daytime have the blue sky, movie time have a star ceiling!

I am ready to add my rope lighting to my risers I just built, but have a couple questions / concerns.

I may have it automated with an appliance module with UPB technology, but I might want to dim the lights. So, I would need the non led lights. Has anyone been able to dim them at all, and if so, do they dim well?

I may also just go the route of having them automated to just turn on, no dimming, so in that case, I'd probably go LED because they look cooler.

The last scenerio is I go real lazy and just leave them plugged in all the time. I'll definately go LED for that route, but my question is, how much energy would they draw if left on all the time? Would it cost me a lot of money to leave them on constantly? I'd probably have around 30' of rope lighting left on all the time if I go that route.

Is there any better / cheaper place to get these lights than anywhere else? A google search produces a lot of places.

They are partnered with Lyman Lighting in Southwest Michigan. They have a nice setup with LED tape lighting. This stuff is made in China and it's pretty much peel and stick to apply. They have a range of products, and I'm going with one that has multi-color LEDs that are dimmable. It's pretty crazy, as you can set them to change color and pulse with whatever music you're playing. Including the controller and a transformer, it runs around $600 for these. And they put out a ton of light for the size without getting hot. You could probably do it cheaper if you just want single-color dimmable lights on a switch or simple remote. Erich Adalbert is my contact there, info on the site.

Although that sounds sweet, that is well more then I was hoping to spend. I am in enough trouble spending 15kish on the room with the wife...

I didn't know LEDs were dimmable, good info. I do have some roles of LEDs that are not dimmable, at least thy go from on, to 70 percent, then off.

So, with that in mind it will boils down to the cost of leaving them plugged in on a full time basis.

During construction. Dual layer soffit with blue led upper and incandescent lower surounding a fiber optic star ceiling.

Hi guys, I know the question "can LED rope lights be dimmed" has been asked over and over. And I found that it depends on if it's a 2 wire or 3/4 wire setup. My question is... Can I just plug a two wire into a standard 120 outlet and dim the outlet? I thought I saw someone doing this with a grafek eye zone but I don't know what kind of ropes he was running.

I believe you can, but I think the results will vary based on the brand. I was initially fine, but ran into an issue where the lights wouldn't turn completely off when the switch was set to off. There was still a very faint glow. We ended up having to install a piece of equipment in-line to modulate this.

I went with 3/8" rope from 1000bulbs.com. Worked out good. No problems bending around 90 degree corners. I found that having them down in the crown molding provided a solid light effect on the ceiling but by having them clipped to the soffits and closer to the ceiling I was able to get the more fiery look to them.

Anyone have a good recommendation where to purchase some good rope lighting?

I bought mine from Amazon.

Don't you need a plan on how/if you plan to dim them before you can select the rope lights that will work best? LEDs are great, but they pose some issues when you dim them. Incandescents are easily dimmed, but I think they can generate a good bit of heat.

I got mine at www.orangetreetrade.com

I bought 3/8" soft white 120v 2-wire LED rope light. I will try to post a picture later. I cut a 50 foot spool into three pieces, one each for the left and right soffitts, and one for the front of the bar. The entire 50ft spool does not dim out all the way with a GRX-3106 grafik-eye, so I will be adding load by combining the LED ropes with a couple of other lights most likely. I tested this theory by adding two of my LED recessed lights to the zone, and the ropes now dim all the way out.

The ropes also don't seem super bright to me either, although I don't have them up against a decently reflective surface yet. I'm still in the wiring phase and I wanted to test the dimming of the ropes in case I needed to make any adjustments to my lighting plan (which now I do!)

I see all the different color lights that you folks are using (and yes it's very pretty), but I do have to ask if anyone knows why movie theaters use red lighting to light the steps and rails? I know the answer btw...

I always thought they were clear rope lights and red fabric/carpet - at least the traditional theaters I recall

+1

My local theater uses clear lights for steps and rails. I think I know what he's getting at though.
