Show Us your rope lighting - Page 3

I used white behind my columns. I had a HUGE piece of ductwork along one side of the room that made a soffit with rope lights impossible.

Here's some two piece crown I did - installed a switched outlet behind the crown and hard wired the rope lighting to it.

Here are some hi-res shots of mine showing the progression between the different light scenes.

here's my extremely slow build. I finally got some curtains in across the front.
I'm currently working on acoustic panels for side walls. They're made of a wood frame and OC703 2" unfaced. Fabric wrapped. Once I'm done the panels, my next project is changing the baseboards. Never liked the honey color. It doesn't work.

If I ever get to build another HT, I wouldn't do a curve. It's just to hard to treat acoustically.

Yup, but still one of my favorite theaters. I just like the flow of it.

In the gazillion of posts/builds I've viewed here I've only seen a few people put rope lights behind their screen.
I forgot to bookmark those, would be nice to have them in this thread as well.
I'm thinking to add rope lights to my DIY screen frame and want to get WAF prior.
Any help for rope lights behind screen picts posted in this thread appreciated.

For those who have done rope lights behind the screen, can you list pros/cons?
I'm guessing here:
Pros:
Cool factor , give ambient light for non-moving events (big game sports/etc) w/o washing out the screen image

Cons:
Distraction if left on?

My install would be easy, just attach the rope lights to the frame behind my screen.
I have 120v plug and cat5e on the screen wall behind the screen already, but no dimmer. I'd have to add some IR dimmer device so I could control it via my Harmony 890.

thx for help.

did some searches, here is rope lighting behind the screen.

I'd still like some opinions on Pros/Cons:

Thx for your comments, this Q should have been posted in the Projectors forum, not a Q for a build thread forum, so I re-post there in the $3k+ forum.

I am toying with the idea of the fiber optic lights like stars and a molding near the ceiling with blue rope lights. I have a tention mount cloth walls (exactly what is used in some cinemas) with accoustic insualtion between that and the walls so I get not echo or reverb sounds. Now my dilema is do I just attach a molding about 4-6 inches below the ceiling line or do I also have a backing that covers the wall from the molding to the ceiling? What do you all think?

My wife and I were looking at some of the theaters in the galleries and saw the crown molding with the rope lighting behind it. Of course the wife said "I want you to do that". My only problem is that the the room has a knee wall then transitions to 45 degrees then to a flat ceiling. I have attached a picture. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas how I could install crown molding and rope lighting. It would make my wife very happy. Thanks in advance, Orlando

I'm looking to put some ropelights up around the walls of my TV room and wanted to have it running on a dimmer. Unfortunately putting an in-wall dimmer does not seem like an option so I was curious if something like this would work for rope lights:

I'm pretty new to these kinds of things so any info is much appreciated.

If you're going to mount lighting permanently then you really can't get away with using an extension cord style dimmer like that. It's certainly not up to the electrical codes.

Why is it not an option to put in a dimmer? Adding wall switches isn't really all that difficult. Nor all that expensive to pay an actual electrician to do the work. Certainly less money than the hassle of burning down your house, right?

I guess that is true, I never really thought about it too much. In terms of putting in a wall switch, I don't actually own the place and am not quite sure if the landlord would approve of me adding a new switch. Maybe I can find a way around that.

Well, um, how's he going to feel about tacking up ceiling moldings for rope lighting? I mean, really....

There's some efficient ways in which I can put up ropelights without leaving any marks. Clear 3M hooks and clear zip-ties don't leave a single mark and get the job done; although it looks no where near as nice as I would like to make it, neither the hooks nor the ties are seen.

I bought some of the Home Depot clear rope lights (Hunter brand), and put it in inside my crown moulding. It's reflecting up about 12in into a flat black ceiling - needless to say, I'm not too happy. I'm getting a grayish look with these lights against the flat black.

Anyone with any pics of Amber LED in their crown moulding? I'm looking at this color.

Thanks.

I don't have a picture handy, but if you click on the link in my signature, I have shots of my ceiling where I used an amber light.

Alright,

I am planning on installing rope light on my riser and stage steps, but I don't know how! The risers are nailed in place and I know that you have to install the rope after carpet goes in. So how do you install the rope on multi-level steps so that they only illuminate the underside of the step lip and you don't see it running down from stair to stair? (does that even make sense?) I only have outlets at one part of the riser, and I imagine that it will be very difficult to run rope inside the riser with all of the beams and insulation. Thanks!

I need to order about 55 - 60 ft of rope light. Thinking of going with the LED depending on the price. Any suggestions on the color? I think blue looks pretty sweet. This will be going in the crown molding on the soffits.

And where is the best place to order this from? Thanks for your help.

I have the same situation, and am considering rope light. My solution would be to create an L-soffit that would descend perpendicular from the flat portion of the ceiling about 8 inches, and then at a right angle back to the 45 degree ceiling. Next, attach the crown moulding and drop in the rope light.

Somewhat OT but your Baby Avatar is great! But then again you already know that right.

By the way does the rope lighting run via straight romex, or is it romex to transformer, then lighting? Also what would bulb replacements entail? Great thread startup!

Hello All,
Here is a professional photo taken by Domus Magazine of my theater. I have two sets of rope lighting which lights up the two sets of dropped crown molding. The color is the standard yellowish white light. I believe I have over 100' of the rope lighting for each of the crown molding.

Here is one with all the lights off except the crown moldings and the starfield.

You can see more photos of the rope lighting in my build thread found in my signature link below.
