Disappointed with New Pioneer 5080 - Fit/Finish - Page 2

I once saw guys at Future Shop (like Best Buy in Canada, same company actually) spraying copious amounts of Monster screen cleaner onto a Panasonic floor model and giving it a couple of "wax-on, wax-off"-style swirls. Even after it dried, you could clearly see the swirlys. I highly doubt that your TV would have come from the factory like that. I've had two Pioneer plasmas (the second being a 5080) and both arrived immaculate. I was very impressed with the build quality vs. plenty of other TVs not made in Japan/USA.

My new 5080HD from Best Buy arrived exactly as OP has described his. I also had a 4280HD with the same bezel problems, but not as bad.

To those of you very picky people, carefully consider the following step before you try it (you may regret it later) - all of you who report no bezel problems on your 5080's don't be so sure - take a nice bright flashlight and shine it 1" away and go around the entire bezel. I had a lot of cloudy, milky, watery, crappy stuff on the bezel that's was not readily apparent until you get close.

What helped: Took an ultra-soft microfiber towel and distilled water and gently went around and cleaned the entire bezel. It looked good. 1 hour later, many of the marks returned, but it's much better.

Solution: Probably some good quality plastic polish.

You should go and look at the displays in the Oakville Best Buy(Dundas). They used a rag and windex on them. The 6010 looks like a disaster when off.

Just set up a 5080 for a friend, no marks anywhere on his bezel, so it sounds like it isn't on all the sets. I am picking one up tomorrow that was a return, guy needed the 60" so I hope this 50" is in great shape, if not they can knock off some more cash and I will most likely fix it, but this is being wall mounted..

Ours looked great too while setting it up. Can't see a problem. It's only when you put your mug 6" away from the bezel looking very closely at it will you see the mess.

I took a look at his set when I saw this thread, and I will say it again.... His does not have the issues you are talking about.... My TV set is a different story, I won't find out till today and if it is bad and can't be fixed then I will have them discount it and I will fix it myself or I will order another TV... The XBR4 I have fit and finish is top notch but the picture has clouds in it during dark scenes so it is going back, you won't see me posting the same problem 10-100 times on this forum, I say fix it or I move on to a better made product. Hopefully Pioneer can get a handle on this if it is this common of a problem...

BOSTON-HD Suggested this... Which seems like it would work better than most cleaners.

It really does work! I think every black shinny bezel has "some" inperfections & this plastic wax really takes it all away! Just use a microfiber towel & you'll be good. I had a few tiny light scratches with in the bezel, applied the Tap Wax & they aren't there anymore. Good just to have for any other plastic items that might need to be cleaned up.

This is slightly OT to this discussion, but I think it's related...

I've read many threads in which plasmas and LCDs are returned to BB, Tweeter, etc. If a set is returned without any cause for damage being given to the store, what do they do with it? Do they simply repackage and try to sell it again as a new item? Is it possible that sets like this are getting sold to others, and that maybe they do have real issues with them but not to the store's knowledge?

Did you go with Novus 1 or Novus 2?

I bet you live in a cold area like me (New England) & it can simply be taken care of with some plastic polish wax like here:

http://www.tapplastics.com/shop/product.php?pid=113&

For $6.75 ($2.25 plus 4.50 S/H) & my bezel shines like the sun! I had the same issue as you & didn't freak out. I guess I was more worried about stuck/dead pixels. I understand your point, but it's NOT the Pioneer (yes...Randy Walters this means you) BB didn't sell him a repackaged item, mine was brand new with the tape in perfect condition. Same issue. Can you confirm that he received a repackaged set? Then don't assume he did!

It's simply because of the cold weather we've been having! Buy the wax & enjoy watching the Pats stomp on the Giants next Sunday with your new Pioneer 5080! Oh BTW...The stand is installed @ the Pioneer factory, not by BB. If you're worried that it was repackaged, then check the service menu for hours used.

This is why I will never buy from Best Buy. I actually went on Pioneers web page and got a list of authorized distributors. Called one in my town and asked if they sell to end users. He said he could for cash. At the time the 4280 was 2200-2500 but I got it for 1900. Maybe you can return it and try that.

I bought mine from BB in town a couple weeks ago and it has none of those problems.

They didnt have it in stock but they ordered it for me so I know I got a new unit.

Well to shed some light on this issue. I was in picking up my 5080 "DROOL" the picture is stunning for the money! I happen to be taking to my sales guy and he tells me one of the Pioneer Sales managers was in over the week giving them training on the newer models coming out, when who knows? But he did get a answer to my question about the water marks etc.. He said it is due to moister changes in the bezel and screen during shipping and it can build up on the cover material and stick to the bezel causing these imperfections. Pioneer is looking into putting a plastic sticky plastic over the bezel that you will need to peal off similar to other products with a shinny surface, weather this happens or not remains to be seen. I for one only had one corner with this, and it was because the cover was stuck to the bezel when I was unpacking it.. The finish on this looks great to me....

I got one "new" in the box once with a giant burnt-in station logo on the top right.

I went with Novus 2. Really does a bang-up job! It won't disappoint, trust me.

Have you tried this already on your bezel? I am thinking of ordering some. I only have one small corner....

Great advice. I bought a Sony XBR that weighed 240 lbs. from BB and was defective. since I carried it home (struggled with a friend-a 240 lb cardboard box is a bear!), they told me I needed to carry it back.

Anyone following this thread wanting to polish scratches out of their piano black bezel, be very careful about what you attempt.

I just tried Novus 2 and Meguair's PlasticX, with poor results from both. Actually, both introduced new scratches. I'm not a plastic expert, I just followed the instructions on the bottles.

Where I'm at: Successfully cleaned most of the funk off of the bezel with a soft, clean, microfiber rag and distilled water. Looks much better.

Maintenance Plan: Swiffer for dusting, that's it.

I like the explanation that Garman (post #42) received from Pioneer as the cause of the bezel issues. Sounds like it's probably the culprit.

Lucky for me I don't have but one corner with that issue and you have to be 3 inches away from it and looking at it on a angle to even see it. So I not going to attempt the plastic cleaner. But I might try the distilled water and microfiber cloth they gave me. Usually I use the canned air before I use anything.

I would also avoid any product maked "polish" or containing the words "removes scratches". I've had other Elite's in the past and these types of products will always leave swirl marks on the plastic. Best products I've found to clean these sufaces are those sold at auto stores for detailng finishes between waxings, such as Eagle One Spray Detailer. Great on cleaning prints and smudges off the Elite plastic surface. I spray on a soft cotton undershirt and gently wipe the surface. Would first try on the back of the base to see how it works for you.

Then again it would be hard for a FedEx, DHL, or UPS to meet their shipping "requirement" of throwing about and generally bashing on your package when it's a TV.

FWIW, I just got a 6010 from Roman- it had some dust on the bezel- wiped clean with a soft cloth. Other than that, my 6010 is flawless!

Thanks for the heads up, I also discovered that black wax(Colored) wax works very good....

That's strange! I use the Novus 2 with a microfiber towel & applied very little pressure when waxing. Came out perfect for me & didn't present new scratches or swirl marks of any kind & did in fact get rid of some very slight scratches I had from delivery.
