On every HDTV I've ever owned brightness==0 is too bright to be calibrated properly. To give you an idea, my set is calibrated right now and with brightness / 100 it's currently set at about 42.
The easiest (though arguably least accurate) calibration you can do is to get any Star Wars DVD and play it in your HD DVD player. Run the THX software and follow the picture calibration instructions.
It's not ideal, but it will get your set much closer to where it should be.
If you don't have a Star Wars DVD or you really want to calibrate your set properly, spend $25 or so on the Home Essentials HD DVD. I've seen them in a few best buys.
