Possible King Crimson in surround - Page 10

konoyaro, many thanks for the tip! I got a quick response from Sid at DGM Forum who forwarded my query to "Amy" at the store. However, this was 2 weeks ago and I am still to hear back from her or anyone associated with the store. Rather frustrating!

Hey Guys & Gals.

Sorry about the long silence, but been rather busy.
Firstly, can I address the 2 folks who have had issues with their discs?
I know what the problem is - and it is the player.
Certain players using a specific DAC decoder chip lock up on 16:9 formatted titles. The only solution is a firmware update where it is available.
Offhand, I cannot remember the exact chip reference.
I do have a workaround though, and affected owners should PM me with Proof of Purchase, and I will get something sorted out.
How's that for service?

Moving onwards.
"Islands" and "In The Wake of Poseidon" will indeed be next up.
It's no secret what the tracklistings are any longer, so point your browsers to
http://www.dgmlive.com/news.htm?entry=3074
for the full details.

We were hoping to get "Beat" out at the same time, but this has been put back & will probably be released at the same time as "Discipline" & "Three of a Perfect Pair" as a sort of trilogy.

Enjoy, and thank you all for the support that you have given this project.

Best news I've heard in ages. I'm buying them all, but this is my favorite period. Thanks Neil!

Got my order for Islands and Wake of Pos into BS. Was considering waiting until closer to release date (to feel a more immediate thrill of receiving them soon after ordering), but decided to order and forget - that way they will be a surprise.

Would be nice if BS had a North American distributor: $12 shipping is annoying, though it beats the current Amazon pre-order price, obviously...

Based on the poster on KC 5.1 releases at Burning Shed, it looks like Starless & Bible Black, Lark's Tongues in Aspic, Thrak, and The Power to Believe are also on the list. Most excellent choices!!

Going by the order listed in the poster, ToaPP-Thrak-LTiA was considered to be released next, followed by SaBB-TPtB-Discipline. Intriguing pairings, and I smell Fripp's tangential thinking behind these choices.

Good observation! I wouldn't have noticed that. I wonder how long we will have to wait until all these titles will be released. Originally they were supposed to come out by the end of this year. I'm more happy with the KC Island and Polydor vinyls I have, but it would be really cool to have these albums in 5.1

In the Wake of Poseidon and Islands are now shipping from vendors in the UK (Amazon UK and Burning Shed at least). Looking forward to listening to these two next week.

I got my copy of Islands from Burning Shed. Still waiting for In the Wake. I listened to the 5.1 DVD Audio mix, Sounds amazing,(Kudos to Steve Wilson), but in my opinion this album is definitely one of Crimsons weaker albums.

My Burning Shed order arriving missing In the Wake, too. Anyone know what's up?
Burning shed reportedly ships all items individually so you'll hopefully get the second disk soon.

Both discs shipped for me...

Ah yes, checking online shows that Wake shipped the day after Islands for some reason.
Both Islands and Wake arrived for me today from amazon.co.uk. I live in California.
I'm still taking in the remastering and mixes but I'm liking what I hear so far.

Mine shipped separately, a day apart. I received Islands yesterday, and I can see why the shipping was separate packages: they are very well packaged - double layer thick cardboard.

I've heard very little of the KC catalog before getting these remasters (ITCOTKC was it, basically), so Islands was a very interesting experience for me. Certainly not pop music! Surround mix was nice, though I need to listen again to determine how aggressive it is (I like aggressive surround mixes - yes, I like to feel like I'm amongst the band as they play, and swirling guitars and keyboards are fine with me).

I hope Wake Of Pos will be awaiting me when I get home tonight.

I've received both of mine as well on 2 separate days. I'm listening to Wake now and it sounds wonderful.......slightly weak vocals (I raised the center a bit).......but I have never listened to any King Crimson before the DVD-A's started coming out...... Red is another standout as well. Very interesting music!

Wow...got both of the new ones in 5 days from Amazonuk to FL. Listened to Wake of Poseidon in 5.1 at a quiet level (late and have neighbors) and can't complain about the mix. As agressive as the last 3!...
Wake showed up three days after Islands after all. Have not had the chance to hear the surround mixes yet, but did hear the 2010 stereo mix for Islands. The title track in particular sounds quite different to my ears--can't really say better or worse, since the original is engraved in my memory. Some of the extra tracks on the CD are just portions of songs. But I'm just thrilled these things exist.

These are gorgeous releases! Many thanks to all involved in the production. The multichannel sound was pristine and really opened up these old favorites (well, Islands at least). In my opinion, Islands was an ignored early Crimson gem; jazz-oriented like Lizards but more introspective, moody, musical and profound. Sailor's Tale is clearly the progenitor of the epic breakout in Starless (from Red), arguably one of the greatest Crimson songs ever. The horns get the space to weave their magic in multichannel and are a revelation. Fripp's guitar is very disciplined and restrained and mostly in the background for this KC incarnation. I have always appreciated Boz's singing on Islands as it complemented the jazz riffs that permeate all the songs, and he comes out nice and clear in this mix. His mournful voice on the slow but superb title track still echoes in my head, as does the lovely piano that accompanied it. This is a great re-release of a brilliant album that stands the test of time all these years later. My only disappointment was with its shortness as I always wished that there was more when I come to the end. There are extras with this new release, and I haven't yet gone through them. The CD also does not do justice to the cover like the LP; some forty-odd years ago when I got my hands on the LP I was blown away by the image of the cosmic islands of the trifid nebula, and it was a perfect visual metaphor. Very possibly the second-best Crimson cover made after ItCotCK.

I also liked the the re-released In the Wake of Poseidon. While never much of a favorite of mine, the sound and surround-sound mix are impeccable. Great mellotron work by Fripp.

For me the Highlight of these two is the surround mix of Cat Food possibly one of the best ever.

I like Islands surround, to be honest I just dont know why I never got into King Crimson before now. Its great all this new music and in surround.

Better late than never. BTW, don't expect the music to be similar on more than any 2 albums. Crimson has change *a lot* over the years!

I listened to 'In the Wake' in 5.1 today, and it sounded very impressive. I have 4 or 5 copies of this album on vinyl, including a Japanese Polydor, and a Pink Island UK 1st pressing, and I must say this DVDA emulates the warm sound, very well, without sounding 'digital'.

On a side note; I've never seen or heard anybody else (including Robert Fripp) mention this, but has anyone noticed how 'In the Wake of Poseidon' is like a musical "mirror" of their first album? I wonder if it was done that way intentionally..

'Pictures of a City' has calm and loud parts with a crazy ending, just like '21st Century Schizoid Man'.

'Cadence and Cascade' with all it's beauty mirrors 'I Talk to the Wind'.

'In the Wake of Poseidon' is very dramatic sounding just like 'Epitaph'.

'Devils Triangle' the long and dark piece, like what 'Moonchild' and 'In the Court of the Crimson King' would be combined.

I finally got into the surround mix for Islands and found it awesome, probably my favorite release for this year so far! Very clean and full sound, remarkable for the age of the recording.

So....when's the next wave coming???
Had the discs for a while but finally listened all the way through to both Islands and ITWOP. 2-ch MLP sounds awesome. Listened to some MCH of both in other system and it sounded quite good, but I'm not big on MCH so I didn't spend much time on it.
