Possible King Crimson in surround - Page 12

Thanks. I suspect Royal Mail becomes US Mail after it crosses the ocean.
Yes, the mailman jammed the "box" into my mailbox. I had a heck of a time getting it out.

I listened to some more MCH from Discipline last night. Very good! And I watched the videos from '82. It was before Pat joined that lineup. It was just the four of them - Fripp, Bruford, Levin, and Belew.

And much to my pleasant surprise, my copy of ITCOTCK arrived yesterday, two weeks earlier than promised. Awesome stuff! I only took time to listen to the DVD-A MLP Lossless 5.1 tracks... so much to choose from. It's inspiring me to get back on my room treatments project. I just wish the video of their 1969 performance of "...Schizoid Man" at Hyde Park was longer. Greg Lake's voice and stage presence was a real treat to these old eyes and ears.

My 2 discs arrived from Amazon UK on Tuesday. Been spending the last 2 evenings listening to the various permutations on my Oppo 95.

The hi-rez 5.1 mixes are very impressive, especially on Discipline. Discipline was never a great sounding album on the original redbook CD. The CD sounded harsh and muddy but it has been cleaned up nicely in the new release. It's like a veil has been lifted from the music. The bass is also a lot tighter and well defined versus the CD which had very little bass.
S&BB also sounds great though I haven't listened as much. Hi-rez is a distinct improvement over the 30'th anniversary CD.
So far, I'm loving these 2 discs! I can't wait for LTIA!

BTW, Amazon USA has lowered the price for pre orders to $17.88.

^^^^^^
I totally agree with your assessment of Discipline.
It is amazing what expert mastering and mixing can accomplish.
Whether or not one happens to be a big Crimson fan or not, this set of re-releases really does set the gold standard of how to do things right. Very impressive!

^^^ No surprise given Fripp's incessant quest for perfection in what he does.

After listening to some of Discipline in MCH and all of it in 2ch, I had forgotten how great an album it is. Frame by Frame is one of my all time favorite KC songs. I listened to SABB last night, too, in 2ch and they did an excellent job with the remaster.

Not to forget the amazing Steven Wilson's hand at this. As much as Fripp is a perfectionist, it is SW who deserves equal thanks for bringing these high-end audio releases to our ears. Fripp, OTOH, deserves full credit for releasing them as individual pieces unlike the sad example of Jethro Tull's Aqualung, which SW also had a hand at re-engineering.

All good points! As someone who was not that much of a Crimson fan, these surround releases have provided me with an 'excuse' to rediscover the band. As much as I like surround, the Tull box is a push for me given the price and the mass of extraneous stuff that I don't need.

I ordered Discipline and Starless from Amazon US. Based on these reviews I am very excited. Really liked Red and Crimson King in surround.
I gave in and ordered all of the discs I didn't have(5) from Amazon UK.
It was like $85 w\\shipping which I consider well worth it.
Now I have to find the time to listen to them all.

This thread has been quiet for awhile....anyone know what's going on with Lark's Tongue, and whether any other later releases are getting the surround treatment?

When?
I can do without Beat personally; rather more looking forward to Three of a Perfect Pair from that time period.

But.....LTIA.....that is what I am really waiting for. Since Court, Red, Discipline, and Starless are out....LTIA is what is needed to complete what I view as the "Core" collection.

I do like Thrak and will also purchase that remaster. I assume for that they will add in the EP that came out as a Thrak teaser.

Another KC surround mix release: Live in Argentina, 1994

From Burning Shed:

Quote:

Two complete audio/video shows from King Crimson's unexpected 1994 return to live performance, Live In Argentina comprises the earliest complete performance film footage of the band's astonishing double trio line-up.

* Simultaneous audio/video playback DTS 4 channel (quadraphonic) surround sound & LPCM stereo (DVD video players)

* Additional audio playback in MLP lossless 4 channel (quadraphonic) surround sound available on DVD-A compatible players.

* Packaging as per King Crimson's 40th anniversary series with gatefold digipak, booklet with sleeve-notes, technical notes & photos in slipcase

Note that Amazon.com has a listing for this as an SACD, which is probably just bad info on their part, for about US$42. The Burning Shed price is much more palatable at this stage.

This is a must buy for me. This is the double trio lineup and they are doing a bunch of stuff from both the 80's and 90's.

I have a bunch of the KCCC discs and most are superb. The DGM site is charging $30. I was going to get a LTIA tote bag for my wife as well as this pint glass, I'll probably pre-order the disc from them.

I do not have any music from King Crimson but I'm very interested in buying a few of the DVD-As. Any specific titles I should start with? In the Court of the Crimson King looks to be the one to buy first but I thought I would ask here. Having a number of Porcupine Tree's DVD-As and the fact that Steve Wilson did the KC DVD-As my interest is piqued.

In the Court might a good place to start, but some people might find it dated. Also the recording quality isn't as good as Porcupine Tree DVD-A's, so adjust your expectations accordingly. You might consider the Discipline DVD-A for a more modern sound. The recording quality is better too (IMO).

Well, Steve Wilson just engineered the surround mixes. You or I could have done the same and it wouldn't have made a difference as to the actual music of King Crimson.

There's 3 major incarnations of King Crimson even though each one had various members come and go. I'd get "In the Court of the Crimson King", "Red", and "Discipline" to start. But other albums have some great stuff, too. Since KC is probably my favorite band of all time, I have to say "get them all".

Larry,

I'm well aware of that. I have no idea about the music itself so I thought I would ask what would be the recommended albums.

Thanks for the suggestions. I posted the same question over at the Steve Hoffman forum. Red and Discipline were also recommended quite a bit in a King Crimson DVD-A thread over there.

Bill
"Red" is probably the most approachable album for someone who is not familiar with KC and likes 'hard rock' type music. And if you had to name their best album taking into consideration all the KC incarnations, "Discipline" will probably be the winner.

I"ll definitely agree with "Discipline"! I love what they did with that MCH mix. I am biased to Adrian Belew, so I am quite fond of that era. I was happy to hear that KC is releasing more from that period in MCH!

A minor update: Amazon.com now has the Argentina 1994 double DVD-A set listed at a reasonable price, for those that don't like to order from the UK (burning shed) (I'm not sure where DGM posts from).

I ordered from DGM in the past. It's somewhere in the US, I can't remember where. BTW they are offering a free pin for all pre-orders of Argentina.

Interestingly enough, there is an "official" bootleg of the band in Argentina which sounds great, according to some reviews on Amazon.

Good to know. I wonder how much of the upcoming DVD-A's has already been released on this bootleg. The description for the new discs only mentioned they come from a "run of shows" in October.
I was thinking the same thing, but I'll be getting it anyway. The other live recoding of the basically the same lineup is "Absent Lovers: Live in Montreal 1984" which was their final show for KC at that time period. I like it better than B'BOOM.
