Yamaha 1800 cheapest 4 HDMI 1.3a receiver? Any issues?

Thread Starter
I have 4 (actually 5) HDMI sources at the moment, but I don't see anything in my price range. I wanted to go big and buy a Onkyo 905, but I'd rather wait and let them work out the quirks. However, I need to upgrade, my current one is more than 5 years old(5.1, 2 digital inputs). I have decided to go with one that will simply meet my connectivity needs and decode the HD audio formats.

I think I read that the Yamaha will not convert component to hdmi, is that the biggest issue? Hand-shaking problems, any of that? It would be really nice if someone would give me the skinny on the receiver and help me make up my mind. Street prices seem reasonable for it and it looks like a better buy than the 805.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I don't own one. I did have one here for a few days to test it. I thought it was an excellent performer and would be happy to own one. Based on a short test, I would recommend it without hesitation.

The reason I'm posting, however, is to suggest that the number of HDMI ports may not be the best reason to choose a receiver. I have 4 HDMI sources like you do but my receiver has only 3 HDMI input ports. I have my DirecTV box connected to one and an HDMI switch connected to another, leaving a third for future expansion. The HDMI switch manages three disc players. I control it automatically with my universal remote so I don't even know it's there or working. It is completely transparent to the operation of the system.

There are also automatic HDMI switches in case you don't have a universal remote.

I think the Yamaha 1800 is great. I think other receivers in that price range are also great and I think you can resolve the HDMI port issue externally.

You could always use component outputs on some of your devices too. Some devices (anything that natively produces a 1080i or 720p image) don't benefit from HDMI (I hope this sentence doesn't cause the flames that I think it will).
