Surround speakers high?

The room I am building is very narrow and I'm thinking about placing my surrounds 7' high, so they are not in the way.
Can I do that with normal surrounds? If yes, should I point them down towards the listening spot or should I leave them level?

Normal recommendation is 6-6.5' high. If it's the difference between getting them in the right place or not, move them up. Just be aware of how close they are to the ceiling as that can cause some issues which may need to be treated. I wouldn't bother pointing them down.

If I move them up just high enough not to endanger any heads, they will be right below the soffits (drywall). Is that a big problem from an acoustical point of view?
(I read somewhere that reflections are not a problem with surrounds. Is that true?)

On the same note...

Bryan, I noticed that you mentioned issues that may arise when surrounds are placed too close to the ceiling. In a low headroom situation where 6.5' basically puts them at the ceiling, what sort of effects might occur and how would they be treated? In my case, I'm using Paradigm ADP bipolar/dipolars.

Sorry to hijack! Thanks!

Surround speakers, at least according to the THX suggestions, are 2 to 2.5 feet above the listener, so bpape is right on. I guess it depends on what is more important to you, proper placement and telling people to duck, or convenience.

I'm in the same boat as you, people damn near knock my speakers over when they come into my room. I found some sturdy speaker stands that have lips where the speaker sits so they dont fall out of the stands unless someone really nails it. (which is followed by me cursing, alot.)

Mounted on / in the wall at the cieling isn't so bad.... I doubt seriously you would find it objectionable.

Bryan,

What type of a ceiling is least suitable for surrounds placed near it? One that is very reflective?
