Viewing distance for 46" lcd hdtv?

I need to know what is recommended because I am about 6-7 feet away from my current 42 inch and it is pretty good but will that be sufficient for a 46 inch?
u kinda wanna take the size of the tv and times it by 2 and that's how many inches you want to be away from the tv. But everyone is different

I have a 46" samsung and sit the same distance away as you. At first the screen seemed HUGE but you get used to it rather quickly

6 feet is a good distance for a 46" 1080p
post #5 of 30
Many recommend 2.5x to 3.3x the height of the screen. So, if a 46" TV has a 16:9 aspect ratio you should sit between 4.7ft and 6.2ft away to get the benefits of 1080p.

I see, so would the 42 inch at this distance (6-7 feet) look better than a 46 inch at the same exact distance? In 1080p of course. I currently have the lc42d64u and am thinking of getting the lc46d82u.

your viewing distance is pretty good, i have a 46 inch set at about 14 feet!!

I'm at about 11' with a 4669 in one room. At first it was HUGE. Now it's very comfortable.

I'll be looking at picking up a 52 when I do another room which is only 14' across.

6' for a 46 should be fine. It may just take some getting used to.

yeah, i remember when i first put my 42 inch in my room. I got headaches and my eyes started to hurt while playing video games. My eyes have adjusted and i have been having fun.

I have a 32 tube TV. I sit between 9.5 and 14.5 feet from it and I am ok with that.
Wouldn't I be OK if I upgrade to a 42" LCD HDTV and sit the same distance away?

I just want to make sure my logic makes since, because most distance viewing calculators say I need at 52 - 60 inch TV from these distances.

Thank you !

Same experience...11' from a 46" at first seemed way big, then you adjust and can see going larger, lol.

Again, same experience...TV seems too big and bright and eyes hurt and then you want bigger...crazy!

10 feet

I have a 118" at around 11~12 ft, and it looks perfect! You get used to any size really, sit where you and your guests are comfortable but the rule of x2 on the size is a pretty good start. The further back the sharper it will look but you will start to lose the benefits of 1080p.

All screens seem to "shrink" over time so don't worry about it being TOO big, it will vary by the person.

Well, I'm about 6' when I'm looking at my TV from laying down in bed to the other side of the room. However, sitting on my bedside here on my laptop, it goes to around 4.5 - 5' of viewing distance to the other side of the room. So, with that in mind, I, too, am looking to upgrade my 32" to a 46" myself. I just feel that I'm not EXPERIENCING HDTV, let alone that I'm WATCHING it. I'm gonna say that 46" will change that, imho. I'm quite sure that I'll feel it's definitely worth it once I do that.

With our 1080P 46" LCD the seats range from 3' to 8' away. HD programming and Blu-Ray movies are ideal from either range. SD DVD using up-conversion has great PQ if you're 6'-8' back (any less you see more grain & pixel). SD programming looks the best from 8', but it still leaves much to be desired.

Just got a 46"er and viewing distance is rather far. I'm sure it's also my vision 20/19 (better than average) and I hve to sit at least 6-7 feet. I had to scoot everything in my room back about a foot haha.

Agreed. I sit about 6 feet back from my 46" and I have no complaints--naturally SD programming is going to look worse the closer you sit, but with HD content I find 6 feet to be ideal.

I've got a 55" and sit about 9ft away LOL

it seemed big at first but its just fine now
post #19 of 30
THX says 5.1 feet to 7.2 feet for a 46''.
We sit 5' to 7' (depending upon where you sit on the couch) away from our 47" LCD, and it seems just right to us. It seems smaller now that we have our 85" screen in our HT done, but that's a different story.

Hade a 46" LCD at 10 ft and upgraded to a 55" at the same distance. The 46" work out prefect and I thought the 55" was to close for about a week. Eventully it all works out too what every distance that is suitable for you.

Nothing like responding to a three-year-old thread.

I believe he was making reference to the person who dug this thread from the grave.

After all it does take the additional effort at that point of clicking the old thread warning box, especially for a response 3 years later (03-29-08 11:39 AM -> Today 01:24 PM {times based on how it is displayed to me at my offset}).
