I'm new and need help choosing a TV.

Ive been browsing the forums for weeks looking at diffrent LCD TV's and im getting a check for 2k in a about week and im spending it all on a TV and and probly a Samsung HT-AS720 HTiB. which leaves me around 1400 to spend on the TV.

But heres the thing I dont have a job so its pretty firm that i have 2k to work with total and i really like the look and capabilitys of the Samsung HT-AS720 but i have yet to hear it so wether or not i get it is still in question. also i have a friend that should be able to get me insane discounts on a tv and possibly the HTiB i still have to see if they can order it. The Brands i can get threw my friend include (LG, Sharp, Sony, Samsung, Toshiba.) i dont know if they can order lesser brands Olevia/Vizio but those are generally cheap to begin with.

So im not really intrested in sale price comparisons so much as the MSRP of those 5 major brands most likely i cant exceed a $2400 MSRP and still fall under my $1400 limit threw my friend. I'm Still open to buying an Olevia/Vizio provided they meet my needs and are still good. But i would prefer a more name brand product.

Ok now here is what i plan on using the tv for.

HD Gaming (so much that my eyes will bleed) and HD Movies alot of both.

At the moment i have an HDMI Xbox 360 and HD-DVD Add-on
(Will get Blueray once price comes down on a player that does both True HD and DTS-MA)

I will also get a DVI-HDMI cable for my 3ghz c2d 8800GTS pc to hook upto the tv.

i Have SD Comcast Cable right now, so if the QAM tunner picks up those few HD channels thats a plus. i might get hd cable later. im not too concerned about what SD cable looks like. But i do have alot of high-medium-low quality mpeg/avi videos on my PC that i share to the Xbox so if the TV can improve the quality of them thats a Huge plus in my book.

Lighting Conditions: Theres no windows and and the light is either on or off (i might get some sort of dimmer lights so its not either pitch black or flourescent light on. So atleast for now ill probly do most of my tv watching in a solid dark room the only other light sources would be from my computer monitor unless its off or the LED lights on my Computer case which i can close a door on my desk to hide those.

1080p is a must

42-47" id prefer 46-47" but im open to as small as 42" my view distance is pretty flexible i can move my chair as close as i want but id prefer to not go below 46" a 52" would be awsome but i dont see me being able to afford one ever anything soon so those are out.

Im confused on if i would benifit from a 120hz tv or not and all its processing. This is primarily a Gaming tv and HD video but mostly gaming if id benifit with 120hz and if it doubles the already low fps of some games without any serious input lag for like Mass Effect which has fps issues that would be nice but i dont think anythings free inluding extra fps without a downside like input lag or something. im sure i would have to take my 360 in and test it on a 120hz tv and a 60hz to see if id benifit so id like to keep my options open. for a 60hz or 120hz tv the 5:5 pulldown would be nice for my HD movies too. The price prem. for 120hz is pretty high right now too so thats another concern.

Id say a mininum of 2 HDMI ports is needed, 1 for the HTiB and 1 for PC, Xbox and future ps3 or standalone Blueray player would hook into HTiB, a 3rd HDMI on the tv would be nice for HD cable if i ever get it but i could also use component for that or buy a hdmi switch later and switch between PC and Cable

like ive said ive been browsing the forums alot but i cant seem to figure out which tv would be the best for my needs theres just so many to choose from i need some good informed suggestions. i want a new tv ASAP been using this 27" EDTV CRT for around 7-8 years, been a casual console gamer for years but now that i have an Xbox 360 and Hd-dvd player i want to be able really use it. Ive been playing PC Game Competativly for years being in one of the top teams for the Battlefield series its given me an eye for high FPS i can usually tell by looking at a game if its running at 30fps or 60+fps i cant have any Ghosting either.

I know the new 540 series from Toshiba comes out in March but i dont know if i can wait 2months to get my hands on a new tv and i dont want to wait the 2 months to find out they still have green push.

hopefully someone can help me decide thanks for your time.

Since lighting is not a problem, I would suggest the Samsung LN-T4665F. I don't mean to be rude but if you're unemployed, don't you have more pressing needs than a new tv?

I would not suggest that tv unless you can get a older model. He should check the *1007/1011* calibration thread to see what I'm talking about. The picture on those newer sets are beyond awful.

I would concur with your recommendation and a Sony V3000 and 71 series though it'll bust his budget and hopefully he's living with parents (as long as it's not my home) or something similar as I too find it challenging to recommend in light of all the volunteered personal info.

You also may want to consider a Sony S3000 for much less and while it's not 1080P it's ten bit panel/processing makes up for it and destroys 8 bit 1080P competitors.

Hopefully you'll be registered with the MI Works Office in your area and getting an unemployment Check and post a Resume on the MI Talent Bank while you play on the TV. I manage the MI Works Network for our region for Macomb/St. Clair Counties and I see your in Lazy Boy and General Custer country down in Monroe. Not trying to preach but I've spent over 30 years watching tens of thousands unemployed transition especially from the auto industry/suppliers and the money/time goes faster than you think - hopefully you have marketable jobs skills.

Good Luck and Enjoy whatever you choose. Though you may want to get occupational training/job first and then treat yourself.

thx for the input so far, ive been looking at the 71 series from samsung but ive read alot of reports about it stuttering and such so im a little leary about that
TV plus its expensive for me so might be out of my range any way. ill start reading up on the 65F, and the sony V3000, as for the S3000 lack of 1080p is a big turnoff even tho its a 10bit pannel. The W3000 from sony might be out of my price range also but if its not would that be a better choice than the V3000? also getting a samsung tv would match my HTiB but thats not a huge concern really.

As far as me having more pressing things to spend my money on, not really. Im sure i should save the money but what i should do and what i want to do are 2 totally diffrent things lol. it is my choice after all. but thx for all the concern over my well being tho

Well WildAce to answer your question, I'd say that you need to hang in there just another 4 or so weeks and we'll start seeing major price cuts on current models as new ones come out. If you're getting it for cost then I'd say wait and see the new offerings and then make your decision.

Im tempted to hold off till march for the new Toshiba 46XV540 has the same msrp of current 46HL167 but the 120mhz features, 10bit panel, better color spec, 4th gen processer vs 3gen, extra hdmi, but ive never been a person with much patience lol and ill be sad if it still has green push issues.

Toshiba is rapidly improving their LCD's I wouldnt' expect the jump in PQ that we saw last year from them but I would expect them to be much closer to samsung and sony in overall performance.

Also the new samsungs look super tempting...at least to me

sony 46v3000

1080p
10 bit panel

everything you wanted, and i dont think the w3000 is really worth is over the v3000, if you wait a bit you might be able to find a 52w3000 at your prce range (actually i think its at about $2400 on amazon)

good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!
