After 5 years, I have decided to come back on the forum and answer any and all questions/posts related to Denon Audio components (I will also have a thread on the Blu-ray area as well). With so much happening in the CE world, and the confusion it is causing, Denon and myself felt it appropriate to get back on-line to help. Please note that I will respond to all posts as best I can, as long as they relate to the US market, I cannot speak for any other region where Denon components are sold.

debating on getting the denon 788 reciver.

any issues with it and the ps3? i use it both for gaming and blu-ray playback, and would not like to have any lag.

currently have the onkyo 604, but that does not do any processing on the lpcm signal, and is limited to 5.1 on pcm.

The logical onkyo replacement is the 705, but from all the lag I hear about it, i'm not going to deal with it.

Also, if i'm playing a cd/mp3 from the ps3 using hdmi (which then converts it to pcm).

my wife would like it 'expand' the sound to all 5.1/7.1 speakers. I perfer the pure 2.1 sound, but she doesn't, and we can hear the difference between playing a cd using the xbox360 and the ps3 (ps3 sounds better).

would the denon 788 do this?

Yes the 788 will do what you want without 'lag', whether it from movies or music up to 7.1 channels. Even if the signal is 5.1, you can engage the surround back channels to have a 7.1 playback...

Glad you're back DenonJeff.

I currently have the great 5805 and am wondering if the new 3800 BluRay player would internally decode ALL the new audio formats and send them via HDMI to the 5805 for playback - utilizing Audessey, bass management, etc.

Would this give me Dolby True HD, DTS-MA, etc.?

Yes you can, however since you wish to use Audyssey and BM from the 5805 from the analog inputs, the 5805 will do A/D conversion on the signals from the 3800. To be honest, I have listened to audio both this way and direct digital and couldn't hear a real difference. Would it be true Dolby and dts HD, not sure since the 3800 will have done the real decoding, then the 5805 will take it and do more...

If you get the 5805 upgrade (5805MkII) you could let the 3800 do PCM conversion and let the AVR do everything in the digital domain. The upgrade provides for 1080p video and 7.1 channel PCM support.

Hi Jeff, I'll get right to it. I'm researching my next receiver. There is apparently no one receiver that has it all. One brand seems prone to lip sync issues and hum, another has problematic bass management, and so on. The buzz I've been getting with Denon is "clunky interface", which translates as "difficult to set up".

My price point would be about where the 2808 is. Can you address what some have suggested is a "less-than-intuitive" menu interface?

Other than its complexity, Denon has a great reputation for good sound.

Hi DenonJeff!

Recently purchased a 3808 replacing my 3600. Are there any plans to add jpeg picture viewing to the 3808?

The Internet radio sometimes still hangs up and requires rebooting the 3808. When is the next firmware release due out?

First off, you are right that there is no one receiver that has it all for everyone. Whether it's the number of inputs, owners manual, remote or interface, some are not going to like all things about a component. The OSD setup for the 2808CI is our tried and true interface, that may be antiquated (over 16 years old), but it works, kind of like a Porsche 911.

We have worked very hard with this last AVR launch to make the receivers easier to get setup right out of the box, while still retaining the ability to configure it anyway someone would want.

Can't say I have heard of the internet radio 'hanging up' as you describe. Something else must be going on, does it occur on particular stations? If so let me know.

Regarding jpeg streaming on the 3808, sorry to say, it is not capable of doing that due to hardware limitations. We are planning feature updates to the 3808/4308 in the spring, stay tuned for those - and no I can't divulge what the updates will be

You will get the advanced formats in the way of multi-channel PCM, and yes the 5805 will do the rest for you all in the digital domain.

Welcome back Jeff, it's good to know we have a GO-TO person now. My question is, other than checking periodically for firmware updates for the 3808CI, does Denon in any way shape or form announce when there is a firmware available? Thanks.

Hi Jeff,

Can you tell me the MSRP of the AVP-A1HDCI? It was/is listed at $7000 on the Denon site, but there is a rumor going around that Denon has dropped it to $6000.

Also, can you tell us when the US dealers will get thier 1st units?

Hi Jeff, and welcome back.

I have updated my firmware to the latest 1.57, but now notice if I try to check for an update, I get the message Connection Failed. I can connect to the internet radio through the Receiver, so it is not a network issue(at least I don't think it is). I am in the NJ area, could there be server issues? Has been about 3 weeks since I could connect to your servers. Again, Internet radio/networking works fine.

No audio performance differences between the 2808CI and 988, only the remotes (2808CI has learning and second simple multi-zone included) and more zones and sources (2808CI has 3 and 3, 988 only 2/2)

We will be shipping to dealers mid-February and the SRP for both the AVP and POA are $7k...

I have the AVR-588. Will the component inputs accept 720p/1080i signals or just 480p. Need to know if component will downconvert my HI-DEF video.

The component inputs on the 588 are rated at 30MHz, which is enough to pass 720p/1080i, but you may notice some softening of the picture. Those resolutions need roughly 33MHz to pass untouched.

I have experienced several times when trying to play different Internet radio stations where the 3808 will fail to stream a particular station and then stops being able to buffer and stream any subsequent stations until the unit is rebooted (using small power button). Never had a problem like this with my local music server tracks just Internet radio. Although once the unit refuses to buffer/stream then even local music server tracks will not stream until a reboot.

Thanks for the heads up for planned updates in the spring! Great to know Denon is further developing the 3808 software BTW, I like very much my 3808 and is a significant audio improvement over my 3600 which I enjoyed for many years in main listening area and have retired to another room. Of course making the latest Denon AV units Internet enabled is a wonderful thing

One other question, I signed up for the club registration and haven't received anything by email. Should I expect to receive club news/offers/etc by email?

The Owner's club was never quite finished, sorry. It is being worked on currently...

DenonJeff, First of all, I just wanted to say that I bought the Denon 788 from Future Shop in Canada to replace my dead Yamaha 6060. The receiver is absolutely beautiful sounding - for both music and movies. I needed something that processed HDMI audio from my PS3 blu-rays.

However, I'm a bit tee'd off that I can't use my NAD 216 amplifier on the receiver. In this price range, Yamaha, HK, Marantz give you at least 5.1 preouts. I should've done more homework on it, but I just assumed it had preouts since it's a new receiver. Low and behold, you need a 2808 for preouts.

I think this is something you should let the engineers know for the next model. At least allow owners to preout the front left and right. I don't know what I'll do with this receiver now. It sounds excellent with a great pre-amplifier section but I don't want my amp sitting there.

Jeff, thanks again... I keep going back and forth between here and the Blu ray thread!

I recall an article about your new pre/pro that its going to start pushing a feature that uses dual side surrounds that are suppose to be ideal for long narrow theaters. Will this be using any processing or will it simply just duplicate the side surrounds like some of your current receivers do?

If so, will this technology trickle down to your upper mid range receivers(and the dual subs too!)????????????

I've missed seeing Denon at CES both this year and last (got turned away at Mandalay Bay this year). Hopefully next year the booth will be open to all attending.

I've added the 3808CI to my 6.1 system for hi res audio from Blu-ray. I'm running the preout to my 4802 external input and using the 4802 as my main amp. I'm assuming the quality of my 4802 amp is better than the 3808CI. Would you agree?
