Building Bass traps/acoustic panels

I'm ready to build my pannels based on everything I've read here at AVS but I thought I'd share my plans before I bought everything. I'm looking for any input I can get.

Room is 19x19 and is a converted garage.I have an open doorway to the room on a sidewall and a small closet in the rear corner that surrounds the hot water heater. Other than that the room is square. Ceilings are 8 ft with sheetrock walls. Floor is tile with a 8'x11' area rug. There is one 72"x48" window on the rear wall with velvet black out curtains.Room is a home theater room currently with 5.1 surround.

Materials:
1.24 pieces Rockwool 60 48x24x2(same as O.C 705 only cheaper)
2.5 Sheets of 3/4" MDF(will rip into 4" boards for the frames)
3.Black muslin fabric
4.Screws,nuts ,bolts,staples,glue,hanging wire,etc.etc

In 3 of the corners I'll build bass traps. They'll be 8 ft tall and each will have 4 pieces of Rockwool 60. I'll double up and make them 4" thick. The hot water heater closet is in the way of making a fouth bass trap for that corner.

That leaves me enough Rockwool 60 to build 12 2" thick panels. I'll build them 8' x 2'. Only the bottom halves will have rockwool in them. The tops will be blanks with nothing in them. The whole thing will be covered in muslin.

I think I'll put 4 panels on the front screen wall. 3 on each side walls at the reflective points and 2 on the back wall. Or maybe just 2 on each side wall and 2 for the ceiling. Each wall panel will be spaced 4" from the wall.

Well thats my plan. I think it will cost just under $500 for the whole thing. I'm open to any suggestions or feedback. This forum is awesome!!. Thanks.

I'd suggest going 6" thick for the corner traps. Since your room is 19x19, you're going to have some pretty hefty modes at ~29/58/88/116hz.

Looks fine otherwise.

Thanks. I'll have to up my order by 6 panels.Will there really be that much difference between 4" and 6" thick? Also since my center channel is below my screen can I get away with not treating the ceiling?

Have a look at these absorption coefficients

http://www.bobgolds.com/AbsorptionCoefficients.htm

Human ears respond to frequencies between 20Hz and 20,000Hz. The human voice produces frequencies between 500Hz and 2,000Hz. Below 20Hz and above 20,000 Hz sound cannot be heard but it can still be harmful. The ear is most sensitive to sounds between 1000 and 4000Hz.

0.00 = no absorbtion.
0.50 = 50% absorbtion.
1.00 = 100% absorbtion

How much you use will depend on how much space you have available and how aesthetically appealing you would like it to look. Keeping in mind that once you treat an area, there is no undoing it.

Also have a look at Acoustical Treatments Master Thread for more useful resources.

The sub handles everything 90hz and below. The chart only goes down to 125hz. How do the bass traps perform at these lower frequencies when comparing 4" to 6" Rockwool 60. I know the thicker the better so I'll probably go 6" thickness. Looks like 2" is perfect for the wall panels at the higher frequencies.

2" is plenty for the broadband absorbers. IIRC, measuring the absorption under 100hz can be very difficult and usually inaccurate so they usually stop at 125hz. Luckily, you can't have too much bass trapping. The more trapping you add, the less room interaction you get and the closer the sound is to being all direct. I did 3" traps in all corners and it's still not enough, and my room has pretty good dimensions (12.5x17.5x7). If you wanted to get really hardcore on your room, you could shorten one dimension a foot so it's 18x19'.
