Encode/Author MKV or WMV-HD to play in HD-DVD Player

Ave,

I have both MKV & WMV-HD (VC1/5.1) high definition video files (1080p & 720p) on my PC - I'd like to be able to play them in my standalone HD-DVD Player, after burning them on DVD5/DVD9 media.

What do I have to do to encode/author them so they will play in my HD-DVD Player?

I know you can use Ulead VideoStudio 11 to author an HD-DVD, but if I'm not mistaken, it's probably not the best "encoding" available. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks!

I think you have to convert them to AVCHD for them to be playable. I think there is a tutorial on Doom9 for it.

check the sticky above about this. I have converted mkv into mpeg2 without any loss and it plays great

There's the sticky...it is a bit cumbersome but has a lot of great info. Good Luck!

Thanks for the reply guys.

@nakedeye: I checked your sticky & procedure. I do have VideoReDo but it didn't accept an MKV file - how did you get to input an MKV file in there?

Also, does this method retain the original 5.1 Surround Sound audio? And lastly, I'm able to encode an MKV to WMV-HD (WVC1/5.1) using TMPGEnc Xpress, and actually reducing a < DVD5 to fit on a DVD5 using the encoding - is it possible to do this using your method?

Thanks!

Ok, I got MKVExtractGUI and I extracted my MKV - It gave me an .h264 & a .dts file. Now VideoReDo is not opening the h264 either!

nakedeye - how did you ever get to convert an MKV to MPEG2 using VideoReDo!!!
Yeah, I have spent the last week trying to convert my HD WMV file to MPEG to put it on a DVD9. So far no luck. Something always screws up in the encoding.

What procedure are you following?
I haven't even gotten a format to open in VideoReDo - where are you opening your WMV HD into?

Well, currently, I still haven't had any luck converting the thing into a MPEG. I have tried Hcenc (Highly don't recommend it unless you have someone experienced with it setting it up for you) but it messed up the apsect ratio and lacked sound. I tried Amor WMV to MPEG converter, but it messed up the sound, like in the beginning of the film, the sound is about 5 seconds later than the video, but then later on the sound is minutes behind the video. I have tried a couple otehr programs, but they compressed the file from 13 GB to 5 GB and made it very pixulated. I tried Amor again last night, but for some reason, the power decided to cut off this morning at about hour 13 of a 14 hour process. At this point, I am almost out of ideas and motivation.

I hear you. I'm not finding any straight forward method for doing this either. I would definitely love if nakedeye would jump back and at least confess how in the world he ended up converting an MKV to MPEG2 because all my efforts have brought me zilch so far.
So your asking how to author your pirated HD DVD/BD content back onto an HD DVD?
No, I am asking how to make my Video footage that is currently an WMV HD file into an MPEG. I can assure you that this didn't come from an HD DVD or a BD disk.

Exactly!

What about Scenarist? Does it accept an MKV or WMV-HD (VC-1) as input and create an HD-DVD without down conversion to MPEG2?

You referred to using an AVISynth Script to load up the MKV in Quenc. I'm absolutely novice in using an AVISynth Script - would it be possible for you to either point me in the right direction to using one for my MKV, or jotting down a quick script that will do the job for me.

There's one concern I have - what happens to the audio? Does it get re-encoded too? And how do you define target size? Like DVD5/DVD9? And does it take DTS & AC3?

Thanks!

I don't know about mkv but I convert my wmvhd to mpg with sonrenson squeeze

Just wondering

Since Scenarist 4 ACA or SCA is no longer sold...would it be fair game in suggesting to others to use it? I guess the same goes for HD DVD titles....Since its not longer a marketed format

What about using Nero 8? Also, I didn't think WMV-HD files/disks could be played on the HD DVD player! They won't play on my Pioneer BD player.
Oh, I think I understand what you are doing now. WMV-HD to MKV or mpeg.

You gotta love that in every thread about conversion someone has to come along like they're the copyright morality czar. First, Mickey did not say he had files that were from anything copyrighted so that's irrelevant to the thread and the general discussion. Even if the program that constitutes a file is copyrighted, if it was broadcast on the "public" airwaves, then captured by anyone in the form of a file it can be viewed for non-profit personal use regardless of if its on a hard drive or on a disc. Last time I heard we as Americans still had that right as the infamous "Betamax" case tried to define.

A forum such as this is not the place for you to build your better utopian society. Mickey's question is quite legitimate and deserves discussion without any judgement whatsoever. Now go sell you form of "finger pointing" morality somewhere else. Personally, I'm tired of it.

For converting MKV to something else I have great success with mkv2vob (google it).

The only caveat is the subtitles which most of the time are in a .ASS (not a joke) format. You can extract them with mkvextract and use subtitle studio or another application to convert them into a .SRT format (subrip).

You can then configure mkv2vob to read the subtitles from an external file (the subtitles file must have the same name that the mkv but with a file extension .SRT).

Just select the container you want (.MP4, .AVI or .MPG) and it will convert it for you. If the file is h264 and you select .MP4 you have the option of not doing a re-encode of the video.

The resulting file plays quite well on my PS3.

And how is this going to help the original poster?

The best way I have found to do this is using MeGUI. It has a AVS script creator that works good. I have to manual add borders to some files after I save the script in notepad. I then use the bit rate calculator to figure out what will fit on a DVD9. Usually set if for 7.6 gb of data then it will fit after I use MF6+ with HD powerpack to create the folders.

I typed up a guide that I will post after I get the pictures added to walk everyone through. It is an involved process, but it works.

Once the file is converted to .mp4 or .mpeg2 then authoring a disk with it is trivial. The conversion from .mkv is the b*tch.

I don't waste plastic anymore that is why i said I could stream them to my PS3. You could do the same with any media extender also.

Not sure about mkv... I've only dealt with wmv hd files. Those aren't so hard to convert to mpeg2. Allegedly the AVS4YOU AVS Videoconverter can do the mkv to mpeg2 conversion. No, I don't work for them or have any interest in them. I just know their stuff works for converting HD files.

Plenty of tools are advertized as being able to convert mkv to something else and they do if the mkv isn't a complex one or if you don't want/need subtitles. Mkv being a container isn't the problem. What people put inside them is. The subtitles are highly problematic being "soft" subtitles with the subtitle track proper and a couple of soft fonts files. Not many jack-of-all-trade utility can deal with those directly.

Some utility also have trouble with the audio, expecting it to be AAC and they crash when it's something else. As for the subtitles you have to extract it, convert it to something else and re-merge it so you can convert it.

Since this is becoming a pain in the ... process I have now a rule that says: If I can't find it in an .avi format or something that I can convert in 10 minute tops then skip it.

Heads Up!
I have an EASY way of making an HD-DVD from an MKV just using two programs!

Programs Needed:
ALLTOAVI
ULEAD MOVIE FACTORY

Note: I have been working with this method now for a while and if you have an MKV with H.264 video then this is the easiest method to make an HD-DVD with.
I have made several HD-DVD videos now and the video is perfect each time with NO SKIPS and perfect loseless HD video. If your MKV file came from a Blu-Ray source then it may not work with my method and you should use ThrottleAbuse's sticky.

SETP 1. CONVERT AN MKV TO HD-DVD USING ALLTOAVI

1. Open AllToAVI
2. Click Add File
3. Browse For Your MKV File And ADD It
4.a If A Pop Up Appears That Reads: "H.264 Video Detected!
Do You want AllToAvi To Switch To More Restricted Mode?"
b This Is Good So Just Click Yes!
c Click OK! when the second Pop-Up appears
5.a Choose Bitrate from the drop down menu and select High Quality
b Replace The Bitrate of 1000. Type In A Video Bitrate Of 15086
6. In The NO SKIP Option Window select USE NORMAL NO SKIP Click OK
NOTE: Your Width And Height Should Already Appear Inserted
7. Click Add Job Then Click Convert! Wait While Your File Converts
NOTE: This conversion prcoess is slow because alltoavi is using
the x264 Decoder/Encoder,which is slow by nature.

Step 2.

1. Start Ulead Movie Factory (wait, it loads slowly).
2. Under Create a Video Disc select HD DVD. Click OK.
3. Select the movie film icon with the + sign in the browser,
then select the video file you just converted using ALLTOAVI.
4. Deselect the button on the left marked Create menu.
5. Advance to the burn disc option and create your HD DVD.

NOTES:
1. If your HD file is in an MKV container with h.264 video and the audio is not in DTS or from some BD Source then the file should load with ease and convert with ease as well.
2. ALLTOAVI - Does Not work with Windows Vista.
3. A 23MB HD MKV 1 minute sample took 18 Minutes to convert to an HD-AVI file with a conversion size of 108MB.
