yamaha yst fsw150 subwoofer HELP...

Thread Starter
Hi there, I recently bought the Yamaha YST FSW150 subwoofer, and tested it out briefly with my Yamaha YSP4000 digital sound projector (live in a 800sq. ft condo). To my disappointment, the bass wasn't as boomy/loud as I thought it woud be (at least compared to my brother's Klipsch KSW12 subwoofer which was rated 440w dynamic power) I had the volume level to half way on the YST FSW150 sub, and when playing music from my Ipod or watching a movie, the bass just wasn't as loud as I expected it to be, if the volume lvl of the sub was set at anything less than 'halfway', I would barely hear anything coming out of the sub... is this normal? Do I have a defective subwoofer? Although when I turned the FSW150 volume to full (10), I could definately hear the bass. I tried to calibrated the sub through the YSP4000menu, but as a newbie I'm sure that I was doing it wrong.. can someone please help me and explain what the following are and which 'choice' to choose?

I had a choice of calibrating the 'cross over' level, choices I had were
80hz, 100hz, 120hz

I had a choice of calibrating the "LFE" (low frequency effect level), and the choices were... -20db to 0db

As I asked earlier, are Yamaha subs not that good compared to other brands? I mean the sub cost me $200.00+, I thought for that price I would have gotten more 'bass'?! Or maybe someone can educate me and maybe it's 'quality' bass and not the 'booming' bass I got with my FSW150. I definately noticed the difference when I turned off the FSW150 (when playing movies or music... even with the FSW150 volume set at halfway)... so is that 'quality' bass vs. just loud thumping boomy bass?

Lastly, the specs for the FSW150 is 130W 'dynamic power' is that sufficient for my condo? Also this unit can be placed either vertical or horizontal (it is down firing design) I have laminate flooring, should I place it on the bottom shelf of my AV stand or on the laminate flooring... and would it be best placing it vertically or horizontally...

Sorry for being long winded... and thank you in advance for suggestions/replies.

Where is the sub placed? Where are you seated? This could very well be a classic placement issue. Experiment with the sub placement (even a foot or so can make a difference), and if your sub has one, the phase control knob. How much output do you get from the sub if you stand in a corner, or close to a wall (preferably the back wall)?

As far as the crossover goes, set it to 80 hz on your receiver, and disable it on your subwoofer. If that is not possible, turn the crossover knob so it's at maximum. The idea here is to get the sub crossover out of the way and let the receiver handle the crossover duties.

Can you return the Yamaha? If so, take the money you spent on it and buy yourself a BIC H100 (do a search and you'll find more than you can read on this "budget" sub).

If you can't return it, try to make the most of it until you are able to buy a proper sub. Once again, do a search for subs in your price range.

No, Yamaha does not make quality subwoofers. My first "subwoofer" was a Yamaha model similar to yours. At the time I thought it was great, now I know better. If you are dissatisfied with the sound now there is probably very little you can do to rectify the situation aside from replacing it.

Definitely keep it on the floor. Try moving it around the room to hear how placement affects the sound. Also, put the crossover at 100hz or more - that soundbar can't reproduce low frequencies.

Hope this helps.

It's too late, I know, but maybe my advice will help somebody else with similar problem. So, please do YSP4000 Auto calibration, but set subwoofer volume level as low as possible to pass the calibration. After this Yamaha FSW150 should be quite loud.
