Is There A Way To Tell What Gauge Speaker Wire I Have?

Hi,

I just bought a condo which came pre-wired for surround sound which means currently all the speaker wires run behind the drywall and all terminate below the front right speaker. Is there any way to find out what gauge speaker wire they installed?

I guess this question becomes moot if there isn't a way because unless I punch holes on the drywall every few feet and install the speaker of my choice (probably 12- or 14- gauge, that way for sure I know what I'm installing) then I'm stuck with whatever speaker wire they gave me. I hope they're good.

Thanks!

Ah thanks!

Based on that table, I guess a better question would be, what is the ohm load they used. Distance from rear speakers to front is about 12 feet.

It's crude, but you could get a speaker wire stripper tool and find the hole that matches closest to the wire. You'll probably be no worse than +/- 1 size.

At 12 feet I think it hardly matters. Whatever is there is probably fine.

Might turn out to be a lenghty Fuse though!

Maybe this is the answer I intentionally wanted to hear.

You could tie your new speaker wire (of your preferred gage) to the end of what's already in the wall and pull it through from the other end point -- sort of a switch-a-roo.
