The AVR's won't matrix anything if they are receiving 7.1, as there's no room to matrix (even if a couple channels are silent, they are still being sent).
renethx, if you aren't able to matrix, could you try setting your speaker configuration to just 5.1, and see if this changes anything?
Yes, I failed to mention earlier that the best current Windows config is:
1) Set Windows to 5.1
2) Set the players (e.g. PDVD or TMT) to 5.1/6-channel LPCM
This allows your receiver to matrix the rear channels (e.g. PLIIx Movie), and the only time you lose something from the source is when you have a 7.1 BD, and apparently the +2 channels on the BD are just matrixed anyway (they aren't really discrete sounds).
In the future this will become more of an issue as they put real discrete sounds in the +2 channels on the BD, but for now 5.1->5.1 + AVR matrix to 7.1 works great.
Except, of course, for 2-channel sources. But a "HT"PC is for movies, not music!
(As to your 5.1->2-channel issue, that is often an issue with trial versions or OEM versions of players like PDVD or WinDVD. TMT trial doesn't have these limitations, so you might want to try that out.)
