Grey Paint suggestons - completely white room.

Ok, I've got my hardboard screen from Lowe's for $10. Looks good and no imperfections that I see. However, the room is painted in an off white color, and I'm not allowed to paint it or do anything to it.

My projector is an Epson HC720, which is pretty bright, but I'd like to get better blacks in this room, so I'm going with a grey paint.

Can someone recomend me a Behr paint that would work? Silverscreen? Any mix formulas? The screen is 92".

If you go back to Lowes and get them to do a computer color match to True Value "Winter Mountain" that will get you an N8 neutral gray. If you have light colored walls but will almost always have the lights turned down quite low or off then a Valspar computer match to True Value Winter Mist would be lighter gray and a better choice. I am not familiar with the Valspar paints so I cannot specifically recommend a base finish. If they have a washable flat, or matte finish that will produce better whites than a true flat paint.

If you want to go to Home Depot the Glidden "Universal Gray" (RGB 205 206 205) would be the N8 tint and "Snowfield" (RGB 219 220 219) is between an N8.5 and N9. Get it mixed in the Glidden Evermore Premium Interior Super Washable Flat base.

The custom tints for the Behr products are located in this post. I recommend the Behr Premium Plus Ultra Exterior Flat #4850 base. It rolls well and is self-priming, very durable, and UV resistant. There is also a rough guide to selecting a tint for a given situation. My suggestion would be the Following:

~N8.5 DIY Tint {Medium Gray}

Quart Custom Tint
Behr UPW (1050,1850,4850)
0 6 0 Lamp Black
0 1 0 Brown Oxide
0 0 1 Medium Yellow

Gallon Custom Tint
Behr UPW (1050,1850,4850)
0 24 0 Lamp Black
0 05 0 Brown Oxide
0 02 0 Medium Yellow

Be sure to review the Basic Roller Painting Instructions before you paint.

Thanks a lot. Any ideas how much the Behr paint combo will cost me roughly?

Also, just to clarify, the projector will always be set to the theater mode which outputs about 371 lumens with some light during day time and completely light controlled at night.

A quart of the Behr Ultra 4850 is about $17 Cdn. A quart will do two coats on a 120" 16:9 screen if you bag the roller between coats. If you think there is a good chance you will need more then get a gallon. A gallon is four times the paint for twice the price.

You should plan on switching modes to suite the lighting conditions. You may want to go even lighter than what I first suggested.

~N9 DIY Tint {Light Gray}

Quart Custom Tint
Behr ULTRA UPW #4850
0 4 0 Lamp Black
0 0 1 Brown Oxide
0 0 1 Yellow Oxide

OR

Gallon Custom Tint
Behr ULTRA UPW #4850
0 15 1 Lamp Black
0 03 1 Brown Oxide
0 01 1 Medium Yellow

This lighter gray will favor the complete darkness and the lower lumen output. When viewing with more ambient light you should switch to a brighter mode. In both cases you should do a brightness calibration using something like the THX Optimizer utility that can be found on the Cars, Nemo, and Terminator 2 DVDs.

Thanks man. You didn't need to go into all the details but I really appreciate it and helps me make a decision without going nuts trying to find a paint combo.

This is what exactly he recommended to me a few days before the superbowl and I tell you man the result is impressive I watched with a little ambient light sometimes but this tint N8.5 is also good for totally dark room. He is the right person to ask believe me, that's how helpful he is give you every options. Goodluck.

I think I will go with this. I underestimated the amount of light I get in daytime.

Might go with the gallon to be sure. That's all I need right? And a roller? No sealant or anything like that? Complete paint noob here.

What is the difference between the two paint listings in the above post?

There are two tint formulas there. One is for a quart of paint and one is for a gallon.

The three numbers are ounces, 48ths of an ounce, and 96ths of an ounce. Another way people say it is ounces, drops, and half drops. If you look at the first formula there are 6 drops of Lamp Black added to a quart. There are 4 quarts in a gallon so you would expect that for the same color you would add 4 times as much Lamp Black. That would be 26 drops. Now looking at the second formula you will see 0 24 0 Lamp Black. That is 24 drops.

NOTE: This 4 to 1 ratio does not hold true for pricing. If a quart of paint is $10, a gallon is not $40, it is usually about $20 or so. So it is true that sometimes you can pay less and get more.

That right. Be sure to get a good quality low nap lint free roller.

Which of the paint bases are you going with, 1050, 1850, 4850?
