I was set on getting the PL-89, PL-28, and PL-66's to add with my Epik Legend subwoofer. But there was a killer deal on the Energy CF-70 floorstanding speaker($279 per) when they're normally $550 each. Wish I could find a review that compared these speakers. The fact that you can bi-amp them is big in my book.

Should I stick with my gut and go with the PL-89 series or see if I could try to snag those Energy's?

I've never researched Energy speakers before, so I Googled the CF-70's. Immediately I saw two websites that had them for under $280, so I'd be careful in thinking that this is some "killer" deal that you had better jump on. Suggested retail is never what speakers sell for. I paid $225 each for my PL-89's and their suggested retail was also in the upper $500 range, I think. BIC America no longer lists the suggested retail . I also saw only a few reviews on the CF-70's. They were all good, but it seems you can find a lot more reviews on the PL-89's and how good they are, here on AVS.

I hated ordering my BIC speakers without hearing them, but I was not disappointed when I got them. In an earlier part of this thread, I wrote that I compared my PL-89's to my existing Niles PHD-60 speakers ($1200 retail each) and I thought the PL-89's were slightly better.

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. I called Acousticsounddesign yesterday and the guy said the CF-70's for $275 each was a deal from 4 months ago. I just sent them a link to see if they can price match. Even if they can pricematch I will still most likely get the PL-89 setup without the sub. Any ideas what a reasonable offer would be for the 89's, 28, and 66's?

I know someone else who got those speakers plus the PL-200 for $1000 SHIPPED!
I believe that is a great deal. Don't pass up on the sub. It is really impressive.

Wow, that is a pretty good deal. I actually bought the Epik Legend on Monday for $500 shipped. I'm not regretting my decision, but I'm sure I could've gotten 2 PL-200's for around the same price as the Legend. Either way, I'm sure I'll be satisfied with the Legend.

I was going to get an Outlaw sub instead of the pl200 but I was really disappointed in the private sale they had and how it was handled so I went ahead with the 200

How do you like the PL200? I have the F12 and am very happy with it. I also am really intrigued by your floor speakers but I am not sure how much of a difference I would see with those and my current L/R setup.

Nice setup cant wait to hear how you like it.

Only thing I would change (and I do see you have a little one as do I she's 7 months old) is bring the front L&R speakers that the front of the grills flush with the TV stand so your front 3 speakers would be on the same plane and you won't get reflections off the tv stand.

I will experiment with placement when its hooked up, I don't want to pull them out to far and have the kids mess with the back.

That is my daughter River and she is also 7 months, but she is the youngest of 4. Which are all 5 and younger

JMarat - looks like you can go bigger with the TV, plenty of room left on that console!!! Also, I'd move the center speaker as close to the front of the console as possible to avoid the "box inside another box" sound.

Interested to hear your impressions, UPS tracking says my PL-76's and PL-200 will be here today. I started with just the PL-26 added to my 20yr old speakers for a 3.0 setup and I'm really impressed with the build quality of the Acoustechs. I finally saved up enough to take advantage of the great deals at AcousticSoundDesign right now to complete my 5.1 system. The old speakers should be just fine for surround duty.

The speakers are really sturdy and exceptional build quality. The speaker placement isn't final. I have everything pushed back to keep kids from it until I hook it up tomorrow. The sub is going to go on the other side of the closet door towards the camera a bit. and the towers are going to come off the wall and a little outward.

I agree, the Acoustech speakers look great and are really heavy. My PL-76's are not totally "dead" cabinets, you still get a little echo when you tap your knuckle on the sides, but you can't have everything a such a great price point. These do score pretty high in the WAF, mine was not thrilled with the idea of new speakers, but really likes them now that they're setup.

Listening, great first impression. Bass is fuller than my old 8" 2-ways, better midrange, and the highs are actually more laid back. I'm no bass-head, so I'd say you might not need a sub if only using these for music in a smaller space. The highs probably sound better and more laid back in the PL-76's because its cleaner, my old 2-ways have a 3" cone tweeter that is pretty raspy and not too kind on the ears at higher volumes. The old 2-ways must also have a pretty big dip at the 2.5k crossover frequency, I'm getting a lot more mids now too.

If anyone is on the fence about these, just do it. Call up AcousticSoundDesign and get a great deal on some great speakers.

She's cute........ Anyway, what receiver did you decide to go with? Just wondering because I have the Onkyo 808 so that's what I'll be pairing my PL89s, 28, and 66s to when I get them in spring.

I ended up with the Yamaha 671. I went out Bed, Bath and Beyond to pick up some storage tubs and came home with a receiver(Never put an electronics store next to BB&B). Wife was really happy about that one.

Should have the front 3 and sub hooked up tonight. Still waiting for rear mounts and cable track to hide the speaker wire for the surrounds.

::UPDATE::

Hooked the fronts with no problem and had everything up and running in an hour. After watching The Dark Knight and Transformers. Just WOW!!

Coming from a bose lifestyle system, I want to take up a quest to sit in every electronics store and slap people if they purchase a bose system. I paid $1400 for my current set up compared to 2000+ for the bose. Doesn't even compare other than they both play sound

Mission accomplished.

I've been flip-flopping over what to do with my home theater sound for a few months now. The wife and I heard a BOSE soundbar style system at BestBuy. Cinemate 1 I think.. To be honest, despite the fact that it was in the open area of the store with all the crowds and noise, I thought is sounded pretty damned good. I would have pulled the trigger right there and bought the thing, but it was a bit over my budget.

So I start reading everything I can on this forum, and (thought I) settled on the Onkyo 9400thx HTiB. Then a couple people convinced me that I could get a system that would destroy that one for near the same price if I just gave up on the "gotta get it all together" line of thought. Much more reading ensued. Then I found out my end-of-year bonus was gonna be WAAAYYYY more than we thought. (big grin) Thinking then turned to Polk monitors series. And from there to BIC

This thread was most helpful, as I never heard of BIC speakers. I finally (finally) settled on the pl-89 5.1 system with the PL-200 sub. I got a line on a new-in-box Onkyo TXSR805 that I think I can get for $400. That should set me up pretty good. If it sounds as good as that Bose did (to me) then I'm way ahead of the game. Funny thing is, that would put me about exactly where the bose system was, price point wise.

I just wanted to let you know that your opinions and posts have helped out a complete newb a whole lot. thanks!

BIC is so much better than Bose. I only have a center and sub from them and that cost like 250 and I love my system. I also have rear and L/R speakers they just aren't BIC.

I would be willing to sell my ht-88s and ht-65 if anyone is interested. I might want the pl89 system.

If comparing BIC to Bose based on a sound to price ratio alone, I would say the BICs sound about 3-4 times better and that's even being generous. They shouldn't even be compared to the Bose(I only have have the fronts and sub hooked up at the moment).

I have a grin ear to ear with excitement while watching movies now.

I overbought a few years ago when I did my acoustech setup. I have an extra pair of PL-76's and an extra set of PL-89's. This is in addition to my PL-89 / PL-28 / PL-66 / PL 200 7.1 Setup in my theater.

I didnt get a lot of use out of these extra pairs, one was just setup on a secondary room tv and another in a way too infrequently used workout room. We are welcoming our first child into the world this Spring, and my wife is badgering (I kid, shes wonderful) me to sell these. If anyone is interested, please PM me.

I have been the proud owner of a PL-200 sub for the past two years, and have finally decided to upgrade the remainder of my Onkyo HTIB speaker setup (which played well together) with the PL-89 5.1 setup. Now that I will have 2 PL-200's, I have contemplated two configurations. Either stacking the two subs in the corner of the room, or, sitting the PL-89 fronts on top of a PL-200 on each side. Would putting the PL-89's on the PL-200 cause any issues? I have no idea how heavy they are, or if this would have any positive or negative effects acoustically, I just think it would look cool

I would not suggest putting your PL-89's on top of the subwoofer. Doing so will move the tweeters up too high. The sound from the tweeters are very directional and sound best when they are at ear level pointed directly at the main audience/sweet spot. If you put the 89's on top of your sub it will add the additional 2 feet to the height of the tweeters and will make them higher than ear level, unless you have raised seating or are very, very tall.

Thanks for the advice; my couches are just regular couches that would leave me and the tweeters at ear level with them on the ground.. I appreciate the input. I think I'm going to stack the subs in the corner. I found a sweet spot for the one, and am just not into re-placing subs for the addition.

You would also be creating a lot of vibrations on the speaker from the sub and vice versa. Keep each on the floor on their own.

I don't think you should stack the subs either. The advantage of having two subs is to create a better low end sound stage since you can have them more spread out. I think you would lose a lot of that if you just stack them. Plus they might create some weird effects by having them close together.
By stacking 2 identical subs you gain about 6db of spl. By spreading 2 identical subs around the room you gain about 3db of spl and you also gain flatter freq. resp. across the room.

So you have to know what results you want or expect from having 2 subs. IMO if I was just wanting more spl I would just buy a single more powerful sub but if I wanted flatter freq resp (which I do) then I would buy 2 and place them 1 near field and 1 far field.
Well. Just got off the phone with ordering my speakers. I really sat on the fence between ordering the PL-89 5.1 system with the PL-200 sub, or getting the Hsu Hybrid 5.1. I really waffled, including actually filling out the HSU order form, but not submitting it. But in the end I wound up with the Bic pl-89 5.1 system.

The big difference was the better than $700 difference in price. I don't know if I will regret not paying the extra, but that's a lot of jack, and I would hardly describe my ear as selective enough to know the difference. I just started getting in to the quality sound arena. If nothing else, I guess its a good first system.

Should get them in a week.
