BIC Acoustech Owners Thread - Page 119

Yeah I hear ya... I just got my HT complete this month... We had our kitchen redone 3 years ago which was $13k and that was her idea. So then she let me buy my stuff as long as it was all on sale and we could pay cash for it. So it took me a year and a half to get the Blu-ray player, AVR, TV, TV stand, subs, speakers, spl meter, tripod, and 4 pairs of active shutter 3D glasses.

Hi BIC Family –

What is your thought

Currently I have a 9.4 setup with 2 x Polk Audio R50 for front and 2 sets of Onkyo SKS-540 and also 2 x Bic V1220 Subs.
I would like to replace everything to BIC in the next 4 weeks and my plan is –
7 x FH6-LCR (2 x Present Front, 1 x Center, 2 x Side Surround, 2 Rear Surround)
2 x FH-6T (Front )
2 x V1220 (Rear Room)
2 x F12 (Font Room)

My current Setup (running for last 3 years) –
2 x SKS-540 (Onkyo 7.1, since I have 2 sets of these, it has 2 x subs + 14 speakers, I had to mix and match those and get the best out of it, then give away those other speaker s I don’t need)
2 x R50 for front
2 x Onkyo Subs that came with SKS-540
2 x BIC V1220 (Which I just bought from Amazon 2 weeks a go)
Small room – 17 x 13 – 95% movies
It sounds alright (to my ears), but I want more.

I have 1 x FH6-LCR and 2 x FH-6T that I ordered on the weekend and it's on its way from Amazon.
So piece by piece it should be completed within the next 4 weeks.
I’m just excited, hopefully it doesn’t disappoint.

Sounds good...I'm running a similar system but only 5 channels of FH6-LCR with 2 PL200s EQed with an Anti-mode. Great sound and the entire system, including the Yamaha 667 AVR came in under $1500. If budget allows you might want to step up your sub choice some. Both the F12 and the 1220s are going to roll off well before 20Hz at higher SPL. Of course if you don't listen very loudly, that is not an issue.
This thread has died off a little but I thought I'd give a short review after owning the PL89 package for 2 months now.

Awesome. Simply Awesome. Movies are clear. Speakers get louder than I would ever listen to them, and never lose clarity! (even with a cheapo receiver vsx-821) After FINALLY matching my two big 18's to the system, they mesh flawlessly, even for music. I've never witnessed the 'harsh' sound I was warned about with horn loaded tweeters, and I listen to a ton of music all genres. Cartoons, football games, Big loud action movies, old classic movies have never sounded better. If you are trying to put together a budget system I would reccomend over and over again. I can't vouch for their subs, but the speakers rock!
Great review! These would be my upgrade, if I didn't recently upgrade to another Klipsch set, I would go with the BICs. I did, however, just order a BIc pl-200!! Can't wait to get it!

Sounds like a fantastic set-up you got there! I would have gone with the Bic pl-200 subwoofers - they were designed with the help of HSU Research and they are Bic's flagship and most powerful subs. Very inexpensive to boot.

Hello BIC Family....

On the recommendations of this thread. I just recently joined the family. biggrin.gif I have a question. My dedicated media room is 18.4' X 13' X 9' with coffin ceiling to 11' . I brought the PL-26 center , FH6-W, and PL-200 for a 7.1 surround sound system. I want to wall mount the PL-26. I see on the back of the speaker there are wall mounting brackets. But i didn;t see any screws that i would use to hang the speaker on. Is there any recommended wall screws needed to hang the PL-26 on the wall?

Is this something like a coffered ceiling, or do you have dead people in your ceiling? : )

Hey all. Just joined the BIC family. Enjoying them so far. Still trying to set up the best speaker levels, EQ, etc...

My system consists of the following:
Pioneer Elite VSX-52
Sony BDP-S790
SVS PB12-NSD Sub
2 Acoustech PL-89
1 Acoustech PL-26
4 Acoustech PL-66
Sanyo HD LCD Projector
Elite 106" Fixed Frame Screen

Nothing like a true HT setup. Here are some pics of my set up. Would love to hear some recent reviews of your speakers. Loving mine so far and the excellent movie quality of the speakers. I recently replaced 8 year old PSB Image Series speakers and the quality in the sound seems to be just as good. Actually my surrounds are better with the BIC's. My sub is an SVS which is an incredible brand that I would highly recommend. Used Sound Distributors to buy my speakers and they have been excellent. One of the PL-89's came with the tweeter not working correctly. Another one is on the way as I am typing right now.

Looks like a true HT to me. Congrats! Excellent setup dude! I wish I had the amount of room you do.

Awesome setup.... The only thing I would've done differently is got the PL-28 center which I have. With the front 3 speakers it is best to have all drivers matching in size. And a second PB12-NSD would also be a huge benefit.

I wanted to go with the PL 28 but it was too tall for my space. The top of the speaker would have been in the way of the screen and my screen is as far high as I can get it. The tweeter size is the same, its just the woofers and I really can't tell that much of a difference. If I had the space I would of defiantly bought the PL-28. My SVS sub is plenty with just one. Actually it is almost too much. Ah who am I kidding, can you ever have too much bass? smile.gif The SVS does rock and for my space it would be a bit overkill. That SVS is a 400 watt and I have the gain under half way and it still is vibrating my mail level and upstairs and the HT is in the basement. Its pretty sweet. I would highly recommend the SVS subs.

What do you run? How do you like them? I'm still working on fine tuning the EQ to get the best sound. I seem to be leaning towards the THX mix on the receiver.

The only difference you could possibly (maybe) hear isn't from the different size of the drivers, but from having a speaker placed horizontally. In a perfect world we would have all three fronts be the same speaker. But, asthetics, WAF, etc. play a part hence the typical horizontal center (MTM) speaker. Like you said, "It uses the same tweeter." The difference in driver size I wouldn't give a second thought. Two things I'd recommend: 1) Moving the 89's 2-3 ft out from the front wall, and 2) have the speakers at least 6ft apart (measured from center of left to center of right speaker). Other than that, awesome room and setup! What size is your room btw?

I am running 2 - Outlaw Audio LFM-1 Plus Subs. Awesome subs for the price... Your SVS isn't overkill and if it sounds like it is then you don't have it calibrated correctly. 2 subs are better than 1 cuz if you locate them at different places in the room it smoothes out the fequency response. I'm running an Onkyo 808 AVR, I use THX Cinema coupled with PLIIx Movie so I get THX sound and 7.1 from 2 ch stereo, 5.1 or 7.1 source material. I used Audyssey to calibrate the system, but then I also used a Radio Shack Digital SPL Meter to achieve 75db at the main listening position with the center and the subs +2db hot. My current room is 23' X 11' X 7.5' and I'm sitting 12' to 14' away.

My room size is 24 x 15 x 7.6. My main speakers are 10 feet apart with the center being in the middle. So 5 ft. between the sides and center. I can't really seperate them any more because of a wall on one side and my breaker box panel is on the other side which prevents me from centering my screen on the wall. I will experiment with bringing the mains away from the front wall. Thanks for the tips. What type of set up do you have? Any pics?

Our room is almost identical. Mine is 24x15x7.6. I guess I may start saving up for a 2nd sub then. I have a Pioneer Elite VSX 52 AVR and I use THX Cinema with the PLIIxmovie as well. I feel that sounds the best. My Elite has MCACC Sound Calibration system (similar to Audyssey). I think I will do the SPL Meter to achieve a better sound. I have a Calibration DVD for audio and video that I used to calibrate my projector so I would think with that and an SPL meter I should be good.

Would love to see some pics of your system. Do you have any?

For those looking into the BIC Acoustech series. Here is a great place to buy them and a great review of them.

http://www.sounddistributors.com to buy them.

http://floor-standing-speakers.toptenreviews.com for a review that is not biased.

So your room is about 2500 cubic ft. Good size. Mine, sadly, is only about 1400. I have 2 x PL89's, 1 x PL28, and 2 x PL66 which is way overkill for my little room. The system was initially intended for a much larger room, but my wife decided on it instead. Anyway, I have pics of my memorabilia room mostly, but not really focused on my actual setup. You can see them here: STARKILLER--1138's Memorablila Room

Here is a link to my pics they are about half way down the page. http://www.avsforum.com/t/990726/bic-acoustech-owners-thread/3300

The room has changed very slightly since then. This is a basement living room with concrete floor with padding and carpet over it. We will be moving into a house we are having built either in winter or spring. That room will be 20' X 15' X 8' and it will be a first floor living room with suspended floor and padding and carpet, walls and ceiling will be drywall. There is an unfinished bonus room above the garage which is 22' X 14' X 8' with the sloped ceiling. That room will eventually become a dedicated theater with a 120" screen or so.

For anyone who has the PL89 package, and enjoys south park, could I get you to do me a favor?

I was just watching this weeks episode, and about halfway through the show it sounded like every single one of my tweeters was blown. I don't know if it was their cheap production quality or what, but there was definitely 'crackling' going on. I have listened to other shows since then, and havn't picked up on it, so i guess I was just looking for some confirmation. I was listening to it fairly loud...
Derek, listen to some other stuff, if the tweeters don't exhibit the same problems, it was likely the source or something with the electronics. Also, it's unlikely that both tweeters would do this, so if it happened to both speakers, it probably not the speakers. If you really want to isolate the problem, switch the receiver or amp from another system, and play back the same stuff.

I agree with shady. If it isn't doing it with other source material, it's fine. And, as far as worring about if you were playing it too loud, these speakers can go insanely loud, so I doubt any speaker problems would be due to rocking out.

I also agree these speakers get very loud with very little distortion.... One thing I would make sure of tho is if you're playing them very loud don't boost the bass or treble tone levels in the receiver, just let the Audyssey or THX settings do their thing.

Ok thanks guys. I haven't noticed it in anything else, and I played it back on 5 channel mode and all 5 were crackly, so I'm fairly confident it was just the show. My thoughts exactly with a 125 watt (but really more like 80 watt) receiver, that these speakers ought to not even be breaking a sweat even when cranked up, but ya never know!

I am newest member to the BIC family - Finally upgraded to all BIC -

9.4 setup packed in a 17 x 13 room -
Cost and performance - I don't think I can do it better with any other speakers other than BIC, I'm really happy with the sound.

7 x FH6-LCR (2 x Present Front, 1 x Center, 2 x Side Surround, 2 Rear Surround)
2 x FH-6T (Front )
2 x V1220 (Rear Room)
2 x F12 (Font Room)

9.4 is actually a 7.2 powered by Denon 2313Ci -

fyi -for all 7 FH6-LCR had to used toggle bolts, drilled into the speaker box and mount to the dry wall.

Sorry for the blurry pictures -

Glad to see this thread has been revived somewhat. People should know about these speakers. Due to unfortunate circumstances, I'm forced to sell my 5.0 BIC acoustech setup that includes: 2 PL 89's, 2 PL 66's and the PL 28 center. Everything is in pretty much perfect condition and there's about 70 hours of use on them. I need them sold a soon as possible, so for everything, it's $550.

Great looking setup you got there..... One thing I would definitely do is pull your subs out so the front is flush with the front of the entertainment center. This will make it less boomy and will also give the ports more room to breathe out the back. I would also make sure the subs are not touching eachother or the sides of the lil nook they are in, you may also want to use some foam underneat them or some form of isolation platform to isolate them from that surface.
