Not a waste of money. Towers give you better mid-range through some low. The sub will only give you lows. I have 3 PL-89s for my front. This gives a uniform sound on the entire front stage.
At about $250 each, three would be around $750.
If you are not building a dedicated home theater, but a smaller media room...smaller speakers should be just okay.
If you want the best sound, go with towers.
A lot of people argue that you MUST use a center speaker for the center. Not true. The best plan is 100% exactly the same speakers all around. This can be difficult to do, but your front stage is the most important and the center is the MOST important. It really should be your best speaker.
