It is a HT-SS2300. I am just going to use that until I can afford something else.

allargon pretty much stole the words out of my mouth as far as Sony goes.
even with that said, i would definitely go with the 8" version. you may or may not be underpowering them now, but in the future if you do upgrade, you will be "future-proofed", and will likely be closer power matched.

Cool, thanks.
I wanted to make sure that the receiver I have will still be able to power the 8 inchers so that they still sound good.

i am running an older Sony 2 channel 100w receiver to my MP 8" in-ceilings and it pushes them quite well. i'm know it is not as clean as it would be with my Onkyo hooked up to them, but it does the job just fine.
i can say that, i have not been able to push the speakers to the point of distortion, while maintaining a loud, but tollerable volume, so i do figure they can handle a decent amount of power.

Thanks man, I am going to try them out.

How are the mids on these speakers? I'm a tad skeptical of just a tweeter and a large woofer, with no midrange speaker. I have a sub for the lows (bic h-100), so I'm thinking about the 5 1/4.

No complaints here, but I haven't used them for anything other than surround. It's possible that Audyssey took care of any glaring problems.

I must be missing something here... Is the TSC price for a single speaker, or a pair like the Monoprice price?

I've got a set of the 6.5"-ers coming tomorrow and I'm installing them this weekend in my Living Room. I'll let ya know what I think!

skeeter 99 i can't wait for your response, I just order 5.1 system for living room and 10 more 8 inch speaker to go around my home. I just bought them on faith, everthing i buy from monoprice has been great and price is perfect. Hopefully get them in by next thursday.

They arrived yesterday and I promptly unpacked them. The bezel does have a very slight purple hugh, which is a bit odd but it almost looks gray so we'll see how it looks on the ceiling. They seem to be well built, except the spring terminals. They're pretty cheap. The 15 degree angled 8-inchers have a much better crossover and terminals, I wish they did the same thing for all of them!

So I'm looking forward to hooking these up tomorrow and seeing how they do. They are for my back surround channels and won't get a whole lot of use but they won't take up any space either which is nice since I'm a bit cramped in my new room

I chose these speakers due to budget constraints and the fact that the wife insisted on in-ceiling speakers. I'm not happy with ceiling surrounds, but she couldn't even be swayed to a wall install. That being said, I'm very pleased with the speakers and what I paid for them.

I have two pairs, one of which is installed for surrounds in my 5.1 HT. I'm going back on forth on whether to install the other pair as zone 2 kitchen speakers or to go ahead and make the HT 7.1. I own an Onkyo TX-SR606 and have not yet made the jump to Blu-ray. The 606 can matrix 5.1 to 7.1 and from what I've read it's pretty decent.

Should I install the second pair to compensate for less-than-ideal surround placement? It bothers me that I can pin-point the speakers so well. They are slightly behind my primary listening area, as I read advice to that end. Maybe I should install the rear-surrounds, and move the surrounds forward a joist?

My friend got his end yesterday to and i'm shock on the quality, but not surprised, they are great. I can't wait to get my speakers.

Got the Mono's all installed and singing. They went in just fine, except the stupid spring terminals won't accept a 14awg wire. That was a bit annoying but other than that, it went just dandy.

I reran Audyssey, checked all the levels and recalibrated with my SPL meter. I previously had NHT SuperZero's for side surrounds but the placement was FAR from ideal. I have never had in ceiling speakers as surrounds, but I kind of like it. It's very different sounding than I'm use to but it's cool. I watched the new THX Trailer that is at the beginning of Star Wars: Clone Wars on BRD (which is an amazing trailer btw) and it sounded really cool. I haven't had much chance to really see what they can do, but so far initial impressions are good. I'll try to snap off a few pics when I get home and post them then.

I installed mine with 12AWG CL2 wire from Monoprice just fine, so your comment confuses me.

Hmm, that's odd. I was trying to connect them up when it was almost dark after literally jumping in and out of my attic all day so maybe I was just being a dork. It's not like it's the first time I've put speakers together before so I'm pretty sure I wasn't putting them in the wrong holes but ya never know

EDIT: I just read the reviews and apparently I'm not the only one with this issue. I guess I wasn't being dumb. I'm curious how those with 12 awg got it in there? The cables I'm using have very thick conductors which could be the issue ...

My ends were bare - no connectors. They seemed a little thin to me, so maybe I need check and see that what I got is what I ordered.

I have these installed for my surround sound.
I love them and feel they are good quality.
I highly recommend them.

Does anyone know how to piont these things? I believe these are "pointable".

You just move the tweeter from side to side to aim it toward your listening position. They are a little stiff at first so they may take a bit of manipulation to get them moving.

Ok, well I said I'd post pics so here are a few:

The speakers installed:

The rest of my system and the in-wall wiring I did:

I picked up an Arlington TVBR505BK to wire the cabling up to:

I think it turned out pretty good

I finally got around to verifying that my cable is 12 AWG. I had no problems. If anyone is interested let me know and I'll post pictures of my cable and the speakers I've not yet installed.

I used 12 AWG monoprice in wall speaker wire with mine (8") and it fit easily. Wonder what's going on? I decided to go all Monoprice speakers in my DIY custom install. I figure for home theater, a good sub couple with Audessey will make up for their limitations.

Here's a pic with them installed in the front wall (without covers). And covered with the screen before I boxed it (still working on that).

Mattnad, are you laying down on the floor for your listening position? I know the screen is there. But why did you put your fronts so low?

They are positioned there because of the screen. There are some geometry challenges because of the ceiling beams and the long (24') throw for the projector. The screen has to be as low as it is and I didn't feel like paying 2x the price for acoustically transparent screen material. Also the scale is a bit deceptive since those are 6" base board moldings so the speakers look even lower than they are.

I know tweeters are directional, but the closest seat is 15 feet from that front wall so it's not the end of the world to have them lower than head height. I've done some listening and imaging isn't bad.

Here's an isometric of the room to provide a better sense of the scale.

I'm considering putting a pair of these on my back patio. They would be under a very large roof, the size of a two car carport, but would obviously be exposed to humidity and temperature extremes. I live in Arkansas so summers are hot and muggy. Winters are mild compared to what many of you deal with.

Think they'd be okay?
The back of the speaker isn't sealed, but I suspect they'd still last a good long time, even in that moderate exposure environment. And when it comes time to replace them, it's an easy R&R job, and for $50 every 3-5 years, I wouldn't hesitate to do it. Mine sound great in the bath; I've got some more to go into the nursery and bedroom hopefully this coming weekend.

I have two of them in the ceiling of my back patio. I am in AZ. I will let you know after summer if they survived.

As Sokoloff said "it's an easy R&R job, and for $50 every 3-5 years, I wouldn't hesitate to do it"
That's a good point, so long as Monoprice doesn't stop carrying them. And so long as they do last at least a few years, which I bet they do.

Heat, I suppose, would deteriorate the surrounds faster. Not sure if the humidity would corrode anything. At least it's not salty air.

Thanks guys. Still not sure if I'll put them out back, in the kitchen, or up as 7.1. I don't have Blu-ray yet, but I'm thinking matrixed 7.1 might sound better than poorly-place surrounds for 5.1?
