You don't pay sales tax on it ... what state do you live in? Maybe there's some obscure tax involved. Or it may be the sales tax on parts/supplies he's passing on to you.

when i lived in CT and worked at an outo shop, tax was charged on the whole invoice amount. when i started to work in Mass. for the same company they charged tax on parts only.
