Need help with home theater components

First post here. I'm building a new house and setting up a home theater at the same time. I am pretty confused. I need to figure out which components I should buy (receiver, dvd/blue ray, ?)

Here is what I am having installed:

5.1 in-wall speakers:
Proficient Audio C870 ceiling mount speakers
Proficient Audio IW550 center channel
Proficient Audio S10 Subwoofer
Television will be a 1080p 50"-60" LCD or DLP (not sure yet)
It is not a theater room but a section of a very large rec room.

I also have a Nuvo 4 zone controller for whole house audio. I think the only way the receiver comes into play here would be as the AM/FM radio.

Where I get very confused is which receiver I need. I get confused with the 1080 switching, passthrough, etc.? I am spending several thousand dollars on the above mentioned setup, so I so want nice quality video and audio but I am not a die hard audio or videophile like some people. In other words, if spending $500 extra on something that only the keenest of ears or eyes would notice then it's not worth it. I do, however want to take advantage of a new HD TV and have an impressive home theater. I also want to future proof myself to some extent. Now that you have a better idea of where I'm coming from here is what I'm considering.

Receiver - leaning towards Onkyo or Yamaha based on advice, reviews, etc. thinking I need to spend $500-900 ish????????

DVD/CD - Thinking about Sony DVP-NC85H/B HDMI/CD Progressive Scan 5-Disc DVD Changer for use as my DVD player as well as CD player for whole house audio??????

Blue Ray - Will probably wait it out and maybe get one down the road unless you convice me that I need one now.

IPOD/MP3 - Do I need a $100 docking station or just a $10 cable that connects it to the receiver?????

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you very much in advance for your time. I would also consider buying equipment from sources on this board.

Thank you,
Mike

If you have the budget I would consider picking up a blu-ray player. With that size of a display the differences between HD and DVD is significant, not to mention the bump in sound quality, add to that most HD players(bluray & HD-DVD) upconvert DVD very well, it's a no-brainer IMHO. Then maybe look at picking up a mega changer for your CD collection. If you're doing any kind of whole house audio I'd assume you'd want to keep these separate(music & video), if you just had the one player(the sony you mentioned) only one person in one location could use the system if I'm not mistaken, which takes some of the fun out of whole house audio. With the two players, one for video the other for music, you could watch a dvd downstairs, while someone else listened to music somewheres else.

Although I haven't heard one myself(I have heard the 905) the Onkyo 605 seems like it hits a nice price/performance ratio.

I just bought a marantz 5002 that is quite nice, with a little looking 500-600 bucks goes a long way with a reciever these days, that was my price range and I had a hard time choosing...(never really had that problem before) it was always lower budget choices..this

I would add to my list a custom programmed remote...I have a harmony, there are several brands that are very nice, various price ranges..the $90 dollar harmony remote that replaced the 8 individual remotes that I had with 1 remote and activity based control was the best money I ever spent...

I programmed it (took all of 5 min) and just left in the room and watched my wife pick it up push the "watch dvd" button and use the remote without asking any questions...that is priceless...

Thank you both very much for the informative responses. That helps a lot with making my decisions. Any other advice/experiences from others would still be very appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

Hey don't know if you've already made your puchases, but I'm running the same set up as you are with the proficient speakers and I have them paired with an Onkyo TX SR805, and an Onkyo SP504 DVD player. The dvd player upconverts to 1080i, and it looks absolutely amazing. The speakers as I'm sure you're probably listening to, are very clear, you don't need any extras as far as pure audiophile ears, lol.

Glad to hear you like the Proficient Audio speakers. They are actually being installed next week so I have yet to hear them. I bought the Onkyo 605. I debated a long time about the 605 vs the 805. Hopefully I won't regret it. Are your Proficient speakers for whole house audio or home theater (or both)? If they are for your theater what TV do you have. That is my next step, I'm leaning towards a 60-65" DLP. Thanks again!

I'm looking at those Proficients too...the planning committee wants in-walls...I was thinking of 3 - IW550's in the front (LCR) and the 870s in the rear....question about positioning those ceilings...they have a 15 degree slant...how far behind or beside did you go??

I may make a 6.1 by sticking in a centre IW550 in the back.....

Hey Mike,
I was very interested in your post as we are working w/ an architect to design a custom home w/ a separate media center. Here's what I'm thinking:
- 70" rear-projection TV. After living w/ a plasma a couple years, I'm not impressed by the picture quality of projectors. Also, you have to be in the dark. Seems easier to play video games and such and walk in / out w/ the lights on.
- 13' wide and 15' deep makes the viewing distances for 2 rows of seats correct and no strange sounds bouncing.
- Re-using my Infinity tower speakers in the front, center speaker mounted on top of TV.
- Dunno about plywood floors, insulation, etc. I don't want to spend a gazillion $ making a room that is technically correct but I don't enjoy any more than something basic.

I appreciate any updates / details on your progress.
Thanks,
Matt

The speakers were just installed but I am not moving in for about a month. Since it is new construction, I won't set up the controller, receiver, and tv until the house is totally finished and I move in. I will try and update with my thoughts and maybe even pictures when I move in. Thanks!
