Let me first explain how my particular system is set up for running so everyone can get a good idea of what may be going on -- and why -- based on the system specifications and this ongoing horrible picture quality I'm getting with my Sony SXRD set...

The setup is as follows: A Panasonic '10A Blu-ray player is connected via its HDMI OUT (only -- no other connections are being used for audio or video) to an ONKYO TX-SR605 RECEIVER's HDMI IN...from there, another HDMI cable is going from the Onkyo's HDMI OUT to my SONY 50" SXRD's HDMI IN...that's it for connections...

Now, I have the Onkyo set up to MONITOR OUT -- YES, which should pass the video from the Blu-ray player through the receiver to the Sony...the model of the SXRD is the A2020 or something in that family -- it was the 50" version of that series, if that helps...the problems I have been having range from horrendous DVD upconversion from this Blu-ray player at 1080p output over HDMI to some less-than-stellar Blu-ray disc performance as well (although not NEARLY as bad as the DVD performance) to wondering what resolution to keep the Panasonic on to match the Sony to wondering if this TV is even PUTTING OUT a 1080p signal...

First of all, do I have everything hooked up right with the HDMI in/out loop through the receiver to the TV? If so, let's move on...does the A2020 series actually DISPLAY a 1080p image -- am I missing this from my Blu-ray player? Let me explain a bit better: the Panasonic's HDMI resolution output is selectable for 480p all the way up to 1080p...but I keep this setting on AUTO, which seems to activate the HDMI handshake and then sends the SXRD a 1080p signal -- as confirmed when I press the Sony's DISPLAY button on the remote...so I have been assuming the Sony CAN display 1080p, at least from Blu-rays...but the DVD upconversion, also running at AUTO (1080p) looks pretty horrendous for the most part...I am beginning to wonder if it's the Sony (because standard def cable looks terrible on this set too) or the upscaling of my player...

Should I keep the Blu-ray player at 480p for DVD playback and let the Sony do the upscaling (IF this is a fixed-panel display which would make everything 1080p)? How do I know what resolution this TV's native, maximum number is? Is this horrible upscaling the result of poor chips in the Panasonic or can it be something deeper like my Onkyo receiver doing something to the signal? It's SUPPOSED to be 1080p pass through via HDMI on this Onkyo, but I really don't know...there are so many possible scenarios and culprits that it makes it difficult to trace.

To be perfectly honest, Blu-ray playback on this Panasonic doesn't look drop-dead gorgeous on the Sony at 1080p (if that's what I'm actually getting and seeing) as the marketing would lead you to believe; I mean, some discs look great, like the recent CON AIR, but most just look...I don't know...just a tad bit better than DVD, if that...now, again, I am beginning to suspect the TV, that it's possibly not putting out a TRUE 1080p signal, but I know this Blu-ray player doesn't put out 1080p/24, and I don't believe the TV accepts that anyway, so could THAT be causing the less-than-stellar Blu-ray images I'm seeing?

If anyone can please make heads or tails with these SXRD issues, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance, AVS members.
