Sharp SE94U settings and tweaks (NO BANDING TALK)

Since there are finally a few owners of these new models I thought it was time to start a adjustment/settings and tweaks thread. I don't know how much difference there is between the SE94 and the D92 so, some of the information in the “Sharp D92U picture settings and tweaks” thread might also be useful here.

I also would like to request that we don't discuss any banding issues in this thread (there are enough threads that have been polluted with banding talk as it is).

Below are my initial settings. I used the Digital video essentials disk and these adjustments have me in the ballpark but I feel that I still need to do some fine tuning.

Source: Comcast cable (basic: STD/HD)
Mode: user
OPC: Off
Backlight: -4
Contrast: +32
Brightness: +2
Color: +3
Tint: -3
Sharpness: +5

hue adjustments have been untouched
color temperature= mid-low (white balance is untouched)
active contrast: on
I/P: fast
fine motion advanced: on
film mode: on
DNR: off
Monochrome: off

Themajickman, I currently am using your settings except I have the temp set on mid-low.

What are you thoughts on the I/P setting, does anyone know what it actually does?

I don't know how the I/P setting works, I've got mine set to fast. It sounds like it might have something to do with response time (just a guess). My reds actually had too much pop so changing the temperature to mid-low and dropping the color to 0 helped a lot. I also turned on the active contrast to see how that works. I have to say that this picture is so much better than my 62U was but it's more difficult to adjust.

Just got this TV installed last night... have not had any time to really play around with the settings, but will try those listed so far in this thread as a starting point. I was curious as to anyone's thoughts on the OPC feature... the settings listed here seem to be much lower than the factory settings. Thanks for any help you can provide!

I personally leave the OPC feature off because I don't like the way it adjusts the backlight when it changes scenes. It's just one less picture processing feature that I have to worry about. Any settings listed here are basically just a starting point and you may find it necessary to adjust any or all of them to fit your personal viewing preferences.

OPC actually uses a sensor to detect lighting in the room and adjusts the contrast accordingly.

According to the owner's manual page 22 the OPC: "When set to "On", the OPC senses the surrounding light
and automatically adjusts the backlight brightness. Make
sure

I tried the settings provided in this thread and did not end up with very good results, so I went back to factory pre-sets for now. With these settings I did watch a few minutes of the movie Tombstone in HD (DirecTV) in 1080i and some scenes looked good (usually daytime scenes with little action), and some of the scenes where they are smoking looked really bad (the smoke looked fake - not sure how else to describe it). Has anyone seen this before? I must admit this is my first LCD and I really don't know much about how to get the best out of the display. My main room has a Pioneer 5010-FD (which was a snap to tweak based on settings provided by Home Theater Magazine), and I was hoping that this newer version of the Sharp might begin to approach the plasma, but so far I am just not able to tweak it to be even close. If anyone has any ideas or thoughts let me know. I am pretty bummed about the performance so far, and had I purchased the unit at a retailer I would take it back. Unfortunately, I got it through my HT installer and I don't really have an option to return it. Also, I should note that I bought this unit primarily to use with my PS3 to play games, watch movies on Blu-ray and DirecTV HD channels. I was not sure if understanding that might help with ideas for tweaking the picture. Any help would be very appreciated!

Sometimes adjusting these LCDs takes some patience. There are two calibration DVDs available that you might consider purchasing that will make it a lot easier (or least give you a good starting point).

1. AVIA calibration DVD
2. Digital Video Essentials (Joe Kane productions)

So this is a strange problem.
I have watched a few BR and HD DVD movies and I have noticed that in when the camera pans in a scene the edges of objects have this flickering/stuttering effect. It's hard to explain so I hope someone understand what I'm saying.
Today I watched Rescue Dawn on Blue Ray from my PS3 connected via HDMI 1080p with 24hz turned on and there is a scene where Christian Bale climbs on a rock to look for rescue planes. It was very visible in the scene when the camera pans across the mountain landscape, the edges of the mountains have this stuttering effect. I've noticed in other movies but I dismissed it thinking it's not a big deal but it was really visible in this specific movie.
I checked the specific scene in all the video modes and I even turned off the 24hz mode on the PS3 but the issue was still there.

I'm not sure what else to try but I find this very annoying. Anyone have any idea if this is normal or this is a defect.

Thanks

I've noticed this as well, and found it particularly annoying while watching the Inside Man HD DVD. I tried certain panning scenes with 24hz oh and off, as well as fast-motion on and off, with the same results.

Do you think this is a defect or this is how all the sets are?
Anyone else there experience this?

I notice this on my RP-DLP (if we are seeing the same thing). I will do my best to explain what i am seeing sometimes on certain programing. Example....There is a close-up of a man on a boat which is setting idle, and there are mountains in the background; the boat is bobbing up and down along with the camera due to the action of the waves, so the mountains are bobbing up and down in relation to the camera and boat; but the mountains are bobbing in a stuttering way. It is annoying but do not see it often. I don't think it is the fault of the TV though. But i do wonder if we are talking about the same thing.

I have had this set for a few months and have found it to be average at best. I wish I would have saved the extra cash and purchased the D64 series instead as I see little value for the extra money.

Does anyone have any new settings they find useful? I have gone to factory settings as I don't have a test disc and my manual tweaks never look any better than factory pre-sets.

A few months? When did you get yours?

Maybe he works for Sharp ?

Sorry for the confusion, it has been just under 2 months. I made the mistake of buying the 52 inch without seeing it in person as I was hoping for a vast improvement over the 92 series… it is not. IMO this unit is not much better than the D64, but is priced much higher. As the Pioneer Kuro models have come down in price, I would rather have had another 5010 instead of this unit (even at the higher price point). I am still scratching my head over the leather bezel (cornerstone design)… weird. I can tell by the huge number of posts in this thread that the units are either not selling or still not widely available.

SHARP MODEL NO. LC-46SE94U (Special Edition)
SSN# 802XXX

Where's the Sharp Quality Control??

The Liquid Crystal panel is a very high technology product with 6,220,800 thin film transistors, giving you fine picture details. Occasionally a few non-active pixels may appear on the screen as a fixed point of blue, green or red.

Is this acceptable??..for a Sharp LCD 46SE94U with 8 Stuck Pixels...Brand New outta box, just got it yesterday.

I will still have to decide if I should (or not) exchange for another one without any Stuck/Dead Pixels...

Anyone?? Any Stuck/Dead Pixels on Sharp LC-XXSE94U (Special Edition)??

Anyone?

It appears you posted the same question in two threads. I would think the answer is obvious....

- If you turned on the TV and can see all these dead pixels while watching TV or a movie, then take it back or call Sharp. I believe the Aquos Advantage program includes next day service.

- However, if you are using some fancy test disc that has managed to find dead pixels scattered around that you'll never notice. I wouldn't worry about it. After all, it comes with a warranty.

Right now, I am tempted to count all 6,220,800 to see if they are all there. I personally don't now the tolerance range as a percentage and am lousy at math.

8 / 6 220 800 = 1.28600823 × 10-6

Isn't this equivalent to .0001286% ????

well long story short... the day before my delivery i swapped it out for a samsung ln-46a650. i always had a tough time choosing between that and the sharp... one of the reasons i chose the sharp initially was due to my GF having an 82u with no problems with banding whats so ever. but after sitting around a week debating and reading things on avs i decided to go with my gut and jump with the samsung.

also... by going with the samsung i was able to save a grand. my old tv was deemed a lemon by bb reapair so i was able to upgrade but they wouldnt give me a promotional price on the upgrade so i had to pay 1400 for the sharp, but during the exchange for the sharp to samsung they credited me back 1100. so, i only payed 300 for my samsung.

luckily, i got a samsung that doesn't have alot of the issues many users are reporting.

sharp is still one of my fav brands and my GF 82u is sexy, but overall i am happy with my choice.

does anyone else have any settings? i am moving soon so i will be able to try to calibrate. but currently dont sit in front of the tv.

I am deciding between a Samsung Serie 650, 750 and a Sharp SE94U. Can anyone help me to know what is the big difference between the 650 and the SE94U. I can get it both at the same special price $2499.99... Anyone?? What makes the Sharp SE94U better than the Samsung 650, 750??? Anyone with some major problems with the Sharp SE94U???

Samsung 650??? or Sharp SE94U???
Is anyone very happy with their picture settings? If so, can you please post what you are using? My 52" will be arriving next week and I look forward to playing with the settings and sharing my findings. This thread could be a great resource for all owners to get the most out of their set.

In the end, picture and video is #1 before other features. The following are what made me buy a Sharp:

Its cheaper than the Sammy, I paid $2000 for 46"
The unit I have has no banding
The Sharp's have uniformly showed all resolutions of video well: SD, HD, and 1080p, that is both for color, image sharpness, and freedom from motion artifacts and I have tested my unit now for over 16 hours of watching all types of resolutions

I've seen, but not be able to test in detail, a Con with a 650:
Decodes SD and lower [ that is regular analog TV] somewhat less well than the Sharp SE94. Reviews say not mostly not so, but I can't confirm that personally

Firmware bug that can be user fixed has been confirmed

The ff pros on the Sammy:

Better sound
no reputation for banding
PIP
USB port
4 HDMI ports [ 3 in the SE94]

Both units have VGA port and Ethernet ports.

If I could actually see a 650 and test all its video decoding as good, the main difference to me would be price, that's $2000 versus $2500, so it puts the SE94 in a lower price bracket, given my biggest priority is accurate video.

Hi Tag,

After playing with all kinds of features, and almost getting a seizure doing it I find the ff is the most realistic setting. For standards, its nighttime, watching in the dark, all ambient lighting off, so the only lights are from the SE94.
  • Set Default MOVIE mode
  • Turn OPC OFF
  • Reduce Back light to 50%
From this setting, I then use custom settings adjusted from here. In 480i SD I have to adjust saturation as the images are oversaturated.

During the daytime, I have to boost backlighting to maximum if the sunlight enters my room, otherwise its OK.

How is the brightness? I finally found one at Best Buy and it looked washed out and dull next to the SAMSUNG FP-T6374. Did they just have the wrong settings on the Sharp? This was in their home theater section (dark)and it was the sharp 65" se94u that looked bad.

I was all but sold on the sharp until i saw it next to the Samsung

This is my first post here so please be nice. I'm not looking for Plasma fans to pick on lcd, I just want to know if what i saw represents it properly. I like the look of the other lcd's in the store.
