TOKYO (Reuters) - Toshiba Corp (6502.T: Quote, Profile, Research) is planning to give up on its HD DVD format for high definition DVDs, conceding defeat to the competing Blu-Ray technology backed by Sony Corp (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research), a company source said on Saturday.

In a separate report filed earlier in the day, Japanese broadcaster NHK said that although Toshiba is expected to continue selling HD DVD players at stores for the time being, it will cease production of all HD DVD-compatible equipment and will close its HD DVD factories at Aomori Prefecture in Northern Japan.

Even thought this thread will be locked and/or deleted in a few seconds due to similarity to many other threads, does anybody notice something strange about the person from Toshiba's words? They say something like "we are pulling out of the next generation DVD business". Wouldn't Blu-Ray still be considered a next generation DVD? Was this a slight mistake of words or does it foreshadow the notion that Toshiba might not get involved at all with Blu-Ray?

Since Blu-ray isn't under the DVD forum it's not next gen DVD as Toshiba sees it.

I thought that strange aslo. I'm thinking they are just taking a cooling off period until they release a blu-ray stand alone. Maybe they want some space so they will not have to release a combo. I believe in the long run not having a Blu-ray on the market will start hurting their HD TV sales.

But I hear they (Toshiba) make a ton of money on fees for SD-DVD. HD-DVD would have been fine as they would probably get the same kind of fees for being a strong backer if not originator. They won't get these fees from Blu-Ray I don't think and supporting Blu-Ray might help, even slightly, Blu-Ray eat away at SD-DVD which would hurt the revenue stream from that.
