How much better PQ bd30 & PS3

I'm %99.99 decided on the PS3 40GB. %70 movies %30 games.
I have a 27" crt HD now. I will be getting the 50PZ85U when it comes out, been waiting for ever.

I use Sennheiser hd650 for movies so the 5.1/7.1 does not apply to me.

Is the bd30/bd50 that much better in PQ than the ps3. I want HD because PQ does matter.

I'm not really a gamer but since the ps3 come with it I would be using that feature.

I'm sure a lot of you have both ps3 and stand alone, which I may end up with also.

Thanks.

At 1080/24p I could see absolutely NO DIF whatsoever between my PS3 and BD30 on my 94" screen/RS1 combo at a 1.1 view distance (for the A/B comparison I did). I took 2 copies of the exact same material and put one copy in the PS3 and one in the BD30. I then watched the clips first on one machine, then on the other....no noticable dif at all. Then I took many various scenes and paused both the 30 and PS3 on the exact same timestamps so I could do a quick A/B to compare the exact frame and again no dif at all whatsoever to my eyes.

Just my experience...others will disagree.

Hmm, the link in post #2 goes to a Kuro pictures thread... ??? Is that what you want?

Thanks for the responses. The ps3 fan base is real strong in this group. I've heard other friends who have the ps3 that play cod4 that the ps3 is not as sharp as a stand alone but they don't care. But I do care.

As for the kuro link. I do like the kuros but think the panasonics are better value. I went to the plasma forum and did search on ps3 and that was the first link that I looked at. If the 50PZ85U is crap which I doubt I will go for the 5010 non-elite. I think the 700u is too dark and have high hopes for the panasonic 800 series.

So I guess the ps3 is good, I have good eyes and am wondering if I could see the diference. Maybee doing an a/b test myself is the best option.

If I do see a diference I can decide if its enough to want stand alone or the extra features of the ps3.

another quote w/o pictures
"Well I just got the 50PZ700 about a week ago and the PS3 followed a couple days later. In short, I love them both and together they're amazing. You don't see how good the TV is until you plug the PS3 in and switch over to 1080p mode. Then play that Spiderman movie - which looks incredible."

I turned purple 2/15 and was pondering between the bd30 & PS3. I do have an X-Box 360 (warranty repair right now) so I do game a little bit so I thought after getting info from various posters to try the PS3 in case down the road there is a game I might like. I too played Spiderman 3 and was very impressed with the view. I did find out when I heard about updating PS3 firmware from 2.0 to 2.1 that with dialup 139mbs is impossible. Sony will not send you a disc as Toshiba did for me. The Sony support person told me to go to a library and get my download. I thought that was kind of special. Oh well nothing surprises me much anymore. Not complaining just thought that was kind of weird.

He was telling you to go to a library to use their high speed Internet service and download the firmware onto a usb drive or something. You can download PS3 firmware to a computer and then update your PS3 with a flashdrive/cd-r/memory card. You don't need broadband at your home to update the PS3.

I knew what his solution was, no problem my wife will get it done on a work PC. It was having 3 PCs, 3 Panasonic player/recorders, X-Box 360, Tosh TV, Tosh HD player etc etc. It was the 1st time anybody told me to leave home to get a firmware upgrade. I just thought it was an interesting story, kind of another electronic adventure to share on the forum. What if I would have been a shut in home senior type.

I am guessing that Sony was not anticipating that there would not be many PS3 users without broadband internet. I guess its not available where you live.

Interesting, I was also pondering between BD30 and the PS3 for a 2nd blu ray player. I have a PS3 already that I use but I wanted a player that would do DTS-MA, but I'm wondering if I'll notice the sound difference between bitstreaming DTS-MA and just getting the core, and if the 30 loads faster or looks better than the PS3?
Claw, the BD30 does not load faster than the PS3. the PS3 is probably almost twice as fast at loading. as far as the sound difference when bistreaming DTS-MA, you will easily notice the difference. i watched kingdom of heaven when i first got a PS3 and then watched it again on the bd30. i could hear the fire crackling from the rear surround speakers that im pretty sure i didnt hear before with the PS3. the overall sound seemed richer and more vibrant with the bd30. now only if they had a position memory feature on the bd30......
Thanks for the comments, I assumed as much about the sound. Ah, decisions decisions! If I KNEW the PS3 would someday bitstream DTS-MA with an update it would make it alot easier!

Yes, I am 1 mile outside a small town and in our particular area we can't even get phone-ID so I use something called Call-Wave on PC. Of course I can have a satellite dish installed to sit along side our dish network satellite. That's a 500.00 install and 60.00 a month for something that my PC use on line I really do not need. That would take money away from my viewing hobby. Obviously with X-Box 360 I have never played online also no plans with PS3 but there are games on either can be played at home. So that was no problem. I do believe our situation is not unique, I'm sure there are many out here that do not or cannot afford broadband. Not a complaint just an interesting fact of life in the boonies.

Too bad most people don't have FiOS Internet service, now that's the ticket.

I put spiderman 3 (came with the ps3 40g bundle) in the PS3 and the copy i got with the spiderman trilogy in the BD30. There is absolutely no difference in the PQ or AQ when comparing the codecs the PS3 can decode. I am viewing on a 92" via a black pearl via HDMI.

As a matter of fact because the PS3 is so much more responsive on menu's and loading that i prefer to watch BD on the PS3 now. The remote isn't that bad and I can get over using the BT remote for now. I know that there are IR solutions but I haven't bit the bullet yet. Also, i don't get the HDMI handshake delay because its established earlier in the XMB than regular BD's.

Having both unfortunately, for now is the best way to enjoy BD IMHO.

Glad somebody else has done the same type of A/B I have and got the same results between the 30 and PS3.

I did extensive A/B testing with the PS3 and BD30 at 1080p/24 on my ISF'd 60" Sony SXRD (A3000). The BD30 was slightly crisper and sharper.

The word on the street is the the PS3 will NEVER bitstream the new codecs as it is a limitation in the HDMI they are using. Now maybe they will start using a new HDMI later on that allows this but won't help those of us who have one.

As for internal decoding of DTS-MA, I would be shocked if we did not get this update. We just likely will not see it until at least 1 player on the market can do it. Sounds like the upcoming Panny BD50 will be it.

To the OP:

I cannot comment on the BD30 but I do own a PS3. Besides not bitstreaming hi rez audio my biggest gripe is fan noise. I have 2 annoyances in my set up. One is a hum in my sub caused by my receiver that I'm working on getting replaced in the next few months. The other is the fan on the PS3. It isn't horrible but for those who can't stand extraneous noise it is really annoying. Once I focus on the sound I have a hard time zoning it out. It is not noticeable at higher volumes but during quiet scenes it can be easily heard.

I can also tell you that the fan noise seems to very greatly between users. Some barely get any and others get a lot. Some of this can be blamed on poor ventilation by the user but that is only part of the story.

As for postives I can definitely say it is VERY FAST. Very fast boot up, quick response with the remote, and movie load is easily the fastest you will find.

Good luck!

What PS3 model do you own? I have a 40GB PS3 & its operation is very quiet. Last December I bought & returned a BD-UP5000, the unit I received was a real "clunker" that failed to play a Blu-ray disc.
