I sent it in for service (I think it went to NY) and they sent it back a few months later with a new network card, but failed to fix the firmware issue. So my dealer just replaced it with a new one in January 2008. I didn't know if the original issue was caused by my comcast connection or just from having an early model. I didn't want to chance another failure, so I waited until now to update it.

Good to hear the update went well

After being unable to update at home (connection failed), I have successfully updated at my office.

Settings after update are:

Main Ver = 01.73
Sub Ver = 00.88
DSP1 Ver = 36.57
DSP2 Ver = 39.45
Ethernet IMG = I200805230152
Ethernet BL = B200707020733
Ethernet CNE = C20080523
WEB = W200805230718
GUI FPGA CONFIG = A080719A
GUI PRG = 00007621
GUI DAT = 37750011
DGTL PLD = 00.50

Thanks for the help on this tread. I am hopeful that I with the current firmware, I will be able to download future updates at home.

Just opened the box on a new 3808ci purchased from 6***.com. Plugged it in, connected an enet cable, and updated. Updated took a little over an hour, with no hiccups. I did not check the pre-update version numbers. Speakers were not hooked up to the unit so I do not know if it would have popped.

Settings after update are:

Main Ver = 01.73

Can't wait until the October 1 update.

DSP1 Ver = 36.57
DSP2 Ver = 39.45
Ethernet IMG = I200805230152

GUI FPGA CONFIG = A080719A
GUI PRG = 00007621
GUI DAT = 37750011
DGTL PLD = 00.50

Can I get a link to features to be included on the October 1 update?

Thanks

The only thing I can think of is I had my HA system talking to the receiver over ENET. In hindsight, I should have probably shut that off before attempting the update. Couldn't find anything on "Update NG" not sure if that means NoGood, but it was certainly NoGood for me!

Called Denon Tech Support they had me do a reset then recommended I send it in. Website says 2 weeks for warranty service. So I guess it's time to box it up.

Yes, time for service. You might want to double box and insure for the value.

Thanks for the report macbro21. Good to hear the update completed. Actually the latest for a 3808 is firmware main 1.73 sub 00.88. Firmware main 1.72 sub 00.88 is the latest for a 4308.

I initially thought all my settings were preserved after my firmware update, however I just noticed that I lost all my HD Radio and Internet Radio presets.

Wondering what happens when there is a power failure during an update ? First your heart stops for a second or two. It can be longer but the power failure lasted 2 seconds in my case. When it came back, I turned my 4803 on. It acted like nothing ever happened and 10 seconds later it displayed "Resume Firmware update" and I did not have any problem. That was one of the scaryest moment in my life... The update took maybe 65 minutes and the failure happened 16 minutes before the end.

Thanks for the report. Yea power outage while updating not good. Between my heart stopping and sending the receiver in for repair if it fails miserably a power outage circumstance I'll take sending in the receiver. Cheers! See the owners threads for discussion battery backup.

Check firmware module versions listed first post. You should be ok.

3808 updated from 1.69 to latest 1.73. Hardwired setup.

Locked up twice. Had to disable UPNP on the router to complete the update.

Finally completed after 2+ hrs. All settings appears to be ok.

Since I have been having problems downloading via comcast I thought I would add the response I received from Denon regarding this issue.

"Good morning Kevin,

The reason why you are experiencing the "connection failed" when trying to access the firmware update is because Comcast takes much longer to make the connection than the receiver will allow. The AVR-3808CI will take about 30 hops before it times out waiting for the connection. While Comcast takes about 40 hops to connect. Therefore the connection is never made for the download. We are well aware of this issue and if there is a firmware update for comcast users we will make it available. You can take or send the unit to an authorized Denon service center and they will update the receiver with the latest firmware version. The other option, if possible, is to take the unit to a friend or relative's home where a different ISP is used. You will be able to complete the firmware update. Also please remember that the firmware updates are made available so that if a user should be experiencing the problem that the firmware corrects they can have the "fix". However, if you are not experiencing these issues we do not advise that you update the receiver.

I find it interesting that Denon implies that FW downloads should only be performed when your receiver has a problem that the download is intended to fix. However, as far as I am aware they have no easly accessible site which indicates what problems the FW is supposed to address.

Yes, folks should contact Denon technical support with any questions when a firmware update becomes available.

I find it odd that people need to disable UPnP. I have both Comcast and UPnP turned on and never have I had an issue.

I recognize that others do, but I wonder what the actual problem could be.

As a note, I use a Zyxel 550 wireless router, with the Denon hardwired and static IP address.

Yes, perhaps Denon technical support can shed some light.

Except some people with Comcast have reported being able to update the firmware. I don't think they are making this explanation up, so it must be a regional issue with Comcast. What do others think?

This update issue is not really exclusive to Comcast. Based on Denon's explanation, could be any ISP or the issue encountered do to your current ISP network traffic conditions where the 30 count of hops is exceeded.

Regardless, the recommendation is the same as it's been for many months which is to try another ISP if unable to resolve otherwise the 'connection failed' problem.

This issue is now listed first post for the latest firmware update.

Static IP might be the key to your comment because since going that route myself I've had no issues. Maybe its the DHCP and UPnP that has some kind of conflict.

Grrr. Pet peeve of mine. Hop counts in a modern day network mean nothing. The above should have said "end to end latency" is too high. But that begs the question, why? It's just a simple HTTPS connection. Is it possible that Denon's SSL threshold is too short?

*OR*, the IP stack on the DENON has a TTL of 30. Hmm, I thought I had a trace of Denon doing a FW check. I'll dig it up (or redo the FW check and post)
OK, I just looked at the trace of 3808 doing a FW update check.

The IP stack actually starts out with a TTL (time to live) of 30. So here's how you can tell if your Denon update will work or not.

If you traceroute to 202.218.213.57 (the address in the packet trace) and you are more than 30 hops away, you will not be able to perform the update.

One more thing, they use a tcp window size of 8192. That's pretty small. Granted it's an AVR but still! The couldn't devote 16K to TCP so the update can happen twice as fast?
