Buying the Onkyo HT-SR800, have a ?

I am picking the Onkyo HT-SR800 up tomorrow and I have a question. My Comcast HD-DVR (Scientific Atlanta 8300 HDC) has a digital out which I will be running to the Onkyo receiver since it will only do video through HDMI. My question is what kind of cable should I use for the audio connection to the receiver? I don't know much about this stuff so any help would be appreciated or links to the cable on a vendor's website. Thanks

Is it a coaxial digital out or an optical digital out?

A coaxial will use an RCA input like the orange one in the link below, while the optical will look like the little square plug with the door. (Sometimes coaxial plugs are black instead of orange.)

If coaxial, a digital coaxial cable:

If optical, an optical cable:

If you have both, it's your choice, as they'll sound the same.

Thanks, it looks like coaxial digital is what it is. I'll be running my PS3 and X360 HDMI/optical to the receiver which will then go to the tv via HDMI and then the cable box will go to the tv through HDMI and the sound will go to the receiver throught the digital coaxial cable. I hope this all sounds right to you.

Thanks again

Sounds good. You'll have to switch video for the cable box at the TV since you've maxed out HDMI inputs on the receiver, but that's not a big deal.

Be advised that some owners of the same components you have (the HD Box and the Onkyo) are having problems getting true dolby digital out of the cable, and it's coming in 2.0 instead. Some folks are using the passthrough on their TVs, others are not. Working on a solution.

I have mine set up the way you are planning. I have the moto 6412 III. It works just fine.

Is it possible the owners of the HD box do not have it configured correctly? I've got friends with that box and they all send Dolby Digital 5.1 signals just fine when available.
