Small Theater Build Threads - Page 5

Mine is under 10' wide and provides access to my laundry so I had to put my seating off to the side. I'm not quite done yet, haven't taken up to date pics either, but I will as soon as I'm finished.

Do you have the ability to vent the closet from the rear?

I won't be able to vent from the rear without punching a hole in the front of my house. (My wife will never approve.) I could punch a hole in the top to to vent to the attic. My attic is not insulated. Would that let more heat out or in?

Bujee1,

Simple if venting to the attic. Just add a damper in the attic so that when your venting fan is off, air won't come down. Insulate the duct to the damper (also helps reduce fan noise/rattle of the duct). You can use a damper kit like the one below (it's made as a roof cap with a damper that can be attached to the inside of your attic framing).

Heat rises, so I'd think you'd be fine.

Hey fellas,

Mine checks in at 12.4' x 21'.

Here's the build thread: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1029731

My main theater is pretty small at 13'5" x 12 foot to the screen. You can really do some amazing things in small spaces.

Check out the build in my signature.

Cherokee180c, how far is your head from the screen? and how large is your screen?
I am speaking from memory, but I am pretty sure my eyes are 11'6" from the screen and my screen is 108" diagonal (Carada). If you need more exact numbers I can re-measure again, just let me know. I would not want it any bigger after using it for a year. The brightness is perfect and the size is plenty huge due to the distance from the screen. If fact, my game performance drops a bit in on-line first person shooters since the visual field is so big, you may see somebody a millisecond too late, LOL.

Well my room is like 17'wx19'dx10.5tall. Its more of a multipurpose room. Not even in the same catagory as everyone elses nice stuff...But I like what I have.
hey, i know this may be off topic but does anyone know the average size opening needed to still be able to fit the theater seats in the doorway/room
post #132 of 287
Most theater seats (recliners) separate into a back and a seat. I think they can get through 30" doors - maybe even 28" doors. Search in the accessories forum. The answer is there.

I have a small room that I call my "Den" or "office" or even my "Man cave" that is only 9ft 6" by 11 ft. After upgrading my theater projector to the AE3000 I'm left with the AX200 as a "spare". I've only had it for a year now but I'm sure I wouldn't get my money's worth if I sold it. Besides, it is still an amazing projector.
So here's a wild idea: Set it up in my den.
I had to take several measurements and make some dificult decisions with the stuff I already had in the room. I have a 52 inch Mits LCD that I use as my computer monitor and my old Onkyo 605 reciever, a 40g PS3, XBOX 360, PS2, Original XBOX, Toshiba A2 HDDVD player, my home theater PC, and a Sony DVD recorder/VCR.
Would I get rid of the TV? Would I set up the screen on another wall? Where would I sit? Could I get a corner group in this room? If I set up the screen on another wall, would I have to get another reciever and speakers to go with it?

Sometimes the simplest approach is best.
I got rid of the original XBOX and bought a electric drop down screen to go over the TV. The HDDVR from the theater feeds the TV as well as the computer and the DVD/VCR only but everything else can go to the TV or the Projector.
Here are the Pics....

I got the screen from Elite Screens clearance section. It is a 4:3 84inch 1.1 gain VMAX electric screen. the 16:9 image is 77 inches diagonal.
The screen cost me $235 The "projector mount" cost me $8. My cost for the upgrade less than $250.
The AX200 is selling these days for $950. That means for $1200 you can upgrade to a 77 inch big screen!
If you have a surround sytem and a small room you have "No Excuse" not to have a projector.

Very nice Bujee1, love the use of the space.

I still have a long way to go. My screen is 4:3
I decided to paint a mask onto my screen to make it 16x9 or 2.35:1. I like 16x9 for video games but most of my movies are in 2.35:1. I found another VMAX screen from the clearance area in Elite Screens for $165 so I decided to do both. The screens are downstairs in my garage drying as we speak.
I'll post pictures when I'm done.

Great job Bujee1, keep us posted. I love the 'huge' computer monitor!

Im in the process of planning my theater. The house im buying has an enclosed garage that needs finishing (its about 80% done, just a matter of furniture and mounting of the rack/bar combo.

Ive made a rough draft of the layout using SkechUp. Its just a bunch of lines, no fancy colors yet, still getting down all the measurements and what not as i am doing this all myself.

12'x18' room with about 4'x10 for the bar area. The projector (little Optoma ep719) mounted 12'7" back, throws a 93" screen mounted about 7' up should be ample size for the small room that has nearly no ambient light.

let me know what you think.

Two rows are gonna be tight if you take four feet fro the bar area. That leaves you with a 14' L room.

Also 4' seems small for the bar area. Do you have to have that area?
It would be a much nicer theater if it was all theater.
I'm not criticizing, just giving you my opinion.

Unfortunately there is a door in the rear of the theater as well that leads outside. The previous occupants enclosed the garage to make it into a studio apt. I may have some room to push forward and some room to push back once i get back to the property to make some final measurments. But according to Berklines seat measurements there is 29" of space between the front of the back row to the rear of the front, which should be ample im hoping.
I love the design but I wouldn't want to sit in the front row. If it were me I would do away with it all together and get a 100" screen.
rafimos,

You should start a new thread in this forum so more people see this and can give you comments.

The seat's are aprox 65" when reclined. Add 8" for walking, It puts' the front row about
7' from the screen. I think that is too close.

I did a "Sea Change" about 18 months ago..Moved to the country near the South Coast..
The new house only had one room that was suitable for a home theatre and that was bit on the small side..
It measured 10'6" x 15' with 7'6" ceilings..certainly a lot smaller than my first theatre..

After 6 months of construction, the theatre was finished...well at least I thought it was..But after finishing it, I decided I didn't like the Spartan look of it, so decided to re-model it in a more Traditional style..

Here is the end result..

Polished timber soffits were added with additional downlights..
This shot was taken during the intial construction..

New acoustic panels were fitted at the first and second reflection points..

Stained timber columns fitted either side of the screen..

And effects lighting with ropelight and RGB LED downlights added..

More changes are in the making, with the addition of a new projector and a new screen...Does it ever end!!?

Very nice Prof. The wookwork is beautiful.

Thanks kjlewie..
I just checked out your theatre build...It's looking very nice indeed..

I couldn't make up my mind whether I wanted 16:9 or 2.35:1. So I bought two 4:3 screens and painted them accordingly. Have a look...

Oh yeah, I made a housing to hide the screens, I'm going to paint it and dress it up with crown moulding when I decide what color I'm going to paint the room.

Keep um coming please.

So how does the painted screens do with being painted? Seems the paint would bubble up or peel "wrinkle" up? Good idea though if its working..
