Small Theater Build Threads - Page 10

10x10 with a 73 inch Mitsubishi would be great, and it leaves you with 2k for audio and 2 chairs

I would want to get the best quality picture, so I would get the Panasonic Plasma 65" VT50, (or ST50 for the budget conscious.)

Thank you guys for the replies. I am concern that a large TV might be a little disturbing to view due to the small distance. What do you think?

Also do you think if is worth it to close out the window, so maybe the room its darker?

Another think I was thinking how can I get like neon lights or a track led lights install in the room? Is it worth it?

I basically want this room to be a decent room to watch movies and enjoy it while not overloading it...

You only really need super dark if you are using a projector. Direct view I wouldn't worry about.

The main problem I have in my small room is heat. 2 people projector and equipment heats that sucker up.

That's awesome in 10x13

That's really nice! I really should post pictures of mine in here now that it's finished.

Great job Fooks! Can't wait until I can post mine (many months away I'm sure). How are you handling your Marquee? As in the movie name.

Just printing on transparencies. I would eventually like to get a small monitor/tv and run it to my computer. It would be a lot easier to change and it wouldn't have to be just the static image.

Eventually I’m planning on using a TV and either a thumbdrive with poster images or something like an Apple TV to send poster images to it. Or if the TV supports wifi maybe just stream them from my PC. That is far down the road and is just a “nice to have feature” for me. Same with popcorn machine and other things that aren’t important to the viewing experience.

I'm with you 100%. I was thinking of a thumbdrive as well.

If I had a lobby, a popcorn machine would be first on my wish list.

With your's being where a living room would go you are a bit limited in that respect. You did a great job with a very small space.

I've allocated a six foot section outside the basement theater for cabinets and a countertop so at some point I may put a popcorn machine there. As of right now the $$$ for cabinets and top isn't there so those will be the last part of my build. That's with getting contractor pricing on the cabinets and DIYing the countertop. eek.gif

This thread gave me a lot of inspiration that I could have a serviceable theater in my small space so I want to give back now that it is complete.

Stats:
  • Room dimensions are 12’ 1” x 15’ 3” drywall to dry wall (at the widest point).
  • With treatments it is 11’ 10.5” left to right and 14’ 10.5” from back wall to screen or 15’ 1.75” to screen wall (the screen is off the front wall some 3 inches or so).
  • Screen size is 120” diagonal, 2.35:1
  • First row eyes reclined is 9’ give or take an inch or two depending on occupant height.
  • Second row eyes reclined about 14’ 4” give or take
  • Riser depth 6’
  • Riser height 9.75” (I intend to raise the chairs another 1-2 inches as short people have an obstructed view if the front seats aren’t reclined slightly (ideal height for the riser would have been 12” if I had the ceiling height to accommodate it.

Ideally I’d like another foot of riser depth and 2-3 inches of riser height and if I had the money the relocation of the main HVAC lines outside the theater. Riser to soffit height is only 5’ 7”. If I were to build a new theater in the future I’d make sure I had a space at least 13’ x 20’ to accommodate two rows and a false front wall.

Overall I’m pleased with the results given the limitations I had to work with.

Here is my 8.5' by 16' theater:

It started as an unfinished attic area on the second floor without walls, ceiling, electrical or HVAC. As I posted in my build thread, I found this site way too late into the build (essentially when all of the room basics were finished).

Although I would have done many things different, I'm still overjoyed every time I go into it to watch a movie.

The only things left to do are a riser for the back seats, art on the walls (framed movie posters), a sub replacement and a player upgrade to OPPO.

Every single 1 of these theaters is simply awesome, but now, I think it's time to throw some 3D into this party!
