I am so torn...close to buying the troubled Samsung650 but also thinking about the Toshiba's XV540 if it comes out soon here..but prices for the 530 are good.

Hope you are all enjoying a 'trouble' free tv experience

So far, my HD experience (on cable) has been good. Not as good as it was on my CRT, but then that is to be expected. However, I wanted the upgrade so that I could experience all the joy of my PS3, and it sure does that. The big test for me will be this weekend, as I watch live sporting events.

Worst case scenario is that I don't like it and I return it before the 30 days are up. Though, I am not going to get a better 42 inch 1080p for the price.

Thanks for the info!! Very helpful. I reeeeeeally want the 540. Of course that's the one that won't be out for another month or more... Sigh...

What's the differences between 2007's 42HL167 and the 2008's 42RV530U...besides the surprisingly huge weight difference? I'm new to the forum here, so I apologize if someone already answer the question in another thread. I've been frantically searching for a new tv after my CRT TV suddenly died, otherwise I was planning on waiting until after next year to go HD. Because of this, my budget sort of restrict me to 37"~42" range with the 42RV530U being the most appealing. But for about $100 in price difference, I'd like to know if I should go with the new model or last year's model.

I mean I could hit Natural when I have the issue and go Native when it is 16:9 but I never had this issue with my old HDTV (Samsung HLP4663W).

I know for a fact that the sparkling edge problem on top of the screen is due to the fact that this TV does not incorporate overscan. When I'm watching TV via Slingbox on my laptop, which has no overscan, I notice the edge problem on some channels too, but, when I'm watching the same source on my CRT TV, which incorporated a fairly standard overscan, the sparkling edge was cut off. So I guess it is a good thing that this model doesn't do overscan...which is something I care about, so nothing's missing.

I still have to adjust some of the settings so that it looks good on cable HD channels... and I doubt it will ever look good on SD channels unless I sit 30 feet away. 42 inches is just never going to make SD look good. It is just horrid looking.

Oh, and my firmware date is (if I remember correctly) February 18, 2008.

No greens in the blacks, by the way.

Congrats so far everyone that has this TV thinks it's beautiful. See I wasn't lying when I said the picture was fantastic and the features and adjustments are very good

I started a thread here regarding the Toshiba RV350U I'm looking at:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1012084

I was all set to go for the Panasonic TH-42PZ80U, but I'm taking a look at these new Toshiba's. I was wondering if someone could give me any input on these compared to the 42PZ80U.

well this TV is brand new for 08 and has the same specs as the 350u from what I can tell besides the thin bezel of the 350u. Whatever problems were in the older modesl seem to have been fixed this year. As for the Plasma Vs this TV, they both have there Pro's and Cons. Basically LCD's have motion blur and the viewing angles aren't perfect but no problems with burn in. Plasmas can still have burn-in/Image retention and phosphor lag which isnt motion blur but a color trail basically. Heres a video of it http://youtube.com/watch?v=lVw_VvFcV1U. Plasmas also have better color reproduction apparently. I've also heard that Plasmas aren't very reliable, Best Buy charges 469.99 for the 4 year warrenty here on a $1500 Panasonic plasma, compared to the $330 for the LCD's. The salesman said the Plasmas break a lot more often thats why the warrenty costs so much.

Interesting!
One thing I'm most concerned about in LCD's is pixelation during fast motion scenes. Is that still a problem with these newer LCD's? I know for a fact that burn-in/ir still exists if a consumer is not careful with Plasma's - and that does bother me.

PS: Do you actually own one of these? How's SD Cable on this?
yes I own the 530u for over 2 weeks know, SD cable looks pretty nasty but I am also on ANALOG SD cable its not even Digital so. Yes I will say there is Blur while playing Video games, but not really any while watching TV or movies

I just got this TV on Saturday and I watched Transformers with my upconverting Samsung DVD player and I did not see any pixelation or blur with any fast motion scenes and there are plenty of them in that movie.

I have started to notice the blurring in some games when I move sideways, or any side scrolling happens. However, I have to concentrate to notice it. Plus, this is going to happen on most LCD screens and it isn't so bad that it kills the joy of the system for me. I have noticed no lag in control input from the PS3, whether in game mode or not. I love the manual and the tons of options on this TV. I know I will eventually get the image perfect, maybe even get it to look good in SD.

Oh, and I have noticed no blur whatsoever while watching DVD or BR movies. This TV seems almost too good to be true... for the price, I mean.

What game do you notice the most blur in? What system? What connection? The problem is I'm trying to remember if I saw any blur on my old LG 37lb5d, but I can't remember , maybe I did but thought it was the game?
I notice some blur in Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 for the PS3. However, I have tested it on another TV and it does the same thing, so it may just be the game.

This is what I was thinking about this blur issues, it might be an in game effect too subtle to notice on CRTs?
It might just be... I never noticed it on my CRT but seen it now on 2 LCDs.
an easy way to tell what is the LCD Bluring and what is source blur is to hit the screen freeze key during motion. If the screan freezes crystal clear its the LCD, if it freezes and it's all blury its the source
post #106 of 1627
The whole blur thing is throwing me off, if I see it once I imagine I'd end up seeing it for the life of the panel, which hopefully would be a long time

Well, then it is the game... for now.

When I am watching an HD channel that is not broadcasting in HD (with the bars on the side) I sometimes get what I can only describe as dancing pixels or bars on the very top of the screen where the picture ends. It does not happen on every channel and even during a commercial it might go away. I tried to change the picture to Natural and that fixed it but then my HD broadcast is stretched out a little so that is a no go. I thought maybe the Vertical axis needed to be adjusted but there is no function to move the picture on the TV. So, I am at a crossroads here. It is a little bit annoying to say the least.

If anybody has noticed this same issue or has any ideas on how to correct this please let me know.

Thanks.

This has nothing to do with the TV if you're referring to a thin black bar with white pixels jumping around in it. The peopel making the source signal tend to 'cheat' a little on what's sent assuming the very top and very bottom of the picture will be hidden behind the bezel on the TV. So the source people often put closed captioning and other data directly into the video stream in that area. What you're seeing is the TV attempting to convert nonpicture data into a picture to display it.

If you switch between aspect modes, one of them usually zooms in just a tiny bit so that those lines are off the visible area.

Actually I believe there are a few differences. Most notable I think would be the RF350U is speced to have a 10 bit panel, the RV530U is speced as an 8 bit panel. Also the 530 is supposed to have a "high res" PC input, whatever that means, while the 350U has a standard VGA input (no "high res"). It's fairly well known or believed anyway that the 350U uses a Samsung panel. Not sure if it's been established whose panel the 530U uses...

I went to best buy last evening and I saw the TH-42PZ80U Plasma and the RV530U Toshiba first hand.

I have to say, I'm damn impressed with the Toshiba LCD. Source was obviously crappy - so pictures wasn't great on ANY set in the store. But my main concern was (i) pixelation in fast motion scenes on LCD - and (ii) direct comparison of PQ between the Plasma & LCD.

Firstly, I saw absolutely no pixelation in fast motion on the Toshiba LCD. Absolutely none! And I was shocked almost! I kept staring at it, almost wanting to see pixelation and I couldn't.

Secondly - I didn't see any difference in PQ between the LCD & Plasma. Perhaps slightly - the color was a tad bit more Vibrant on Plasma - but I liked the overall bright vibrancy of the LCD.

Again - the Source was some crummy signal - not an HD, Blu-ray or any such source.

I'm almost leaning towards the Toshiba RV530U at this point. I ask myself, why should I pay $1499 for the 42" 1080p Plasma when I can get the 46" 1080p LCD with 4 HDMI inputs for the exact same cost??

This seems to be a Really Good TV. I'm pretty bummed about the fact that they downgraded the 10-Bit panel to 8-Bit in the RV's over the previous RF's. I don't know why they did that!

One Question - I know that when Plasma goes out (life or otherwise), you're looking at a BIG expense. Is it true that when LCD goes out, it's basically you have to get a Bulb replaced and it's all good?

Thanks!

Hi guys, been a lurker of AVS for some time now and just wanted to say I just ordered the 32RV530u for my bedroom. Got a good deal from Crutchfield. Should be coming in Monday, I'm very excited

I will post back impressions next week when I've got everything set up and running. I will be using this TV as a 1080p monitor for my PC and also hooking up an Xbox 360 and PS3.
well technically its not the backlight you need to worry about on the LCD's, they are rated at 60,000hours so like 41 years @ 4 hours a day everyday. Its the pixles themselves, they can get stuck or die over time which are unreparable. Its usually the circutry that gets fried over time though, so the board would get replaced I assume. From what I've been told if a CELL in a plasma dies the whole row goes with it because of the way it works and I don't think thats reparable either. Plasmas use a huge chunk of power to boot up and during this the power supplies can blow.

BTW what the does it matter what the specs are? what if this TV had the worst specs in the world but it looked the best would it matter?

I DID IT!

Just ordered the 42RV530U at Circuit City. After 10% coupon, got it for $1,079 with free home delivery!!!

Now the waiting begins. I'm surely be jumping back in here, as 'Owner', once I get the set delivered and I have it all set up. Also ordered the new Samsung HT-Z410 Home Theater System to go with the TV. I'll hook up my XBOX 360 (With HD-DVD), HD Cable (DirecTV) and the Home Theater System (1080p UpScaling) to the set.

Let's see how I make out!

Damn good deal! I just worked it out if I bought it at bestbuy.ca and with shipping($135) it would come to $1700 and thats ON "SALE" for $1399 *sigh* being in canada sucks sometimes.

I wish I could find a deal like that one!

Theres nowhere in my town to even buy tvs except for *shudders* walmart .
Hey, Can someone give me optimum settings for this TV? I'll be connecting an XBOX 360, HD-DVD, HD Cable & 1080p Upconverting Home Theater System to this TV. I tried looking for settings here in this thread but couldn't find one.

Also, what's the most recommended calibration disc for this kind of an LCD?

Thanks!
Has anyone else noticed this set doesn't retain the Daylight Savings Time settings? Turn DST on in the menus, power cycle the set, and it's back to standard time. It's not a big deal, but it does cause the channel program info to be off by an hour.

Another trivial annoyance - the info button displays its information at the top of the screen by default, but you can press the down arrow to move it to the bottom of the screen. It stays there until you power cycle the set, then returns to the top position.

The picture quality is generally very good. I'm interested in calibrating it - can anyone point to the definitions and/or recommended settings for the service mode parameters?
