720p vs 1080p on Computer Monitor?

Can you actually tell the difference between a 720p video and a 1080p video on say, a 24 inch computer monitor that is capable of 1920x1200 resolution? I am pretty sure you can't but someone I am debating with right now seems convinced that you can. My guess is that due to human visual acuity, our eyes are only capable of resolving a limited amount of detail on a smaller screen (in this case, a 24 inch LCD monitor).

You certainly can with games...that's a little different though. It would depend on the quality of video and how close you're sitting to the monitor.

Ultimately, I think if you gave me a 1920x1200 24" LCD and showed me the same film in 720p and 1080p, I think I could tell the difference rather easily.

That doesn't mean that 720p would be a significantly lower viewing experience, though.

It is subjective if you will be able to tell the diffrence due to people's varing eyesight but most people sitting at a normal distance away from a computer monitor should notice a diffrence in the clarity and the detail since when at a desk you normally are not farther than arms length (2'-3'.) The other factor will certianly be the source content since it is not as obivous the diffrence between say 480p scaled to 720p on a 1920x1200 monitor versus 480p scaled to 1080p on a 1920x1200 monitor. Native content of course will be a much better test.
