Wow... Prices now that the "war" is over

Thread Starter
I did my weekly visit to BB on the weekend. I was there last weekend and bought a few BR movies like I have for the past 9 months. m amazed at the change in BR prices. There were only a few "sales" and those were buy 2 get $15 off on a few titles but in the bulk BR section.. nada... none. Never seen none on sale there. Looking at the tags, I have never seen so many tagged at $35... most of them. If not $35 then $30. Many titles I’ve seen at $20 to $25 before full time. Unfortunately, now that the war is over, it looks like retailers are trying to capitalize on the influx that will be drawn in now that the future is set for a while. This was the first week I actually passed on buying a move at those prices. Just not worth buying movies that I consider "b" for myself. On that note, we watched "Crank" last night which I have had for a month and got a good deal on. Wife walked out half way into it. That has to be the stupidest movie I have seen in years. I’m one of those kinda guys that can get enjoyment out of 99% of the movies I watch no matter what they are and I still think it sucked (and I think I can only say that about a few movies I have seen in the past 20 years).

Best Buy has always charged either full MSRP or $5 below on HDM. Search for "Best Buy Prices" at this thread: http://forum.dvdtalk.com/search.php?searchid=2433725 and you can see the prices from their Sunday ads for the past couple of years.

I find it funny that the majority of the people who declare that there will be no more BOGO, or great deals, are the same people who thought that Porn was going to decide the HD format war.

They had a full rack of $10 off BDs at my BB.

Picked up Meet the Robinsons for $19.99.

The "war' has been over for how long, a week???? Last time I checked Amazon hasn't raised prices...

Best Buy is terrible for discs and always has been. Go to Amazon or somewhere else online.

Can't remember which exactly (there are too many of them for me to remember) but some titles have gone up at Amazon.com right after Warner's announcement. How do I know? I've put some titles in my cart and Amazon.com always give notices on which titles have gone up and/or went down and a lot of them in my cart (I have about 20 titles pending to be bought) have gone up... Although Celine Dion went down by $5 which led me to a purchase.

...and some have gone down. What of it? Prices at Amazon always fluctuate.

not to this extent. Usually I get two titles up and two (of different titles) down within a week. During the entire week after Warner's announcement a lot (more than 10 titles) went up, Celine Dion went down and a Disney audio CD went down. That's it.

Also the fluctuation is usually around the $1 to $2 tops. These changes are about $4 to $5.

People keep declaring that BD deals are over forever and are consistently proved wrong a week or two later. No credibility at all. Everyone posted this around the time of the Warner announcement too, despite the fact that the BOGO were always holiday-sales related. Then a week later Amazon had a new deal. I highly doubt deals are a thing of the past, but I also don't expect them every single week. Let's have this conversation in a couple months if we have not seen any more details. Frankly I could use a break from the sales anyway. The best offers are rarely for the brand new releases and I have most of the older ones I need from the previous offers. I would rather wait for Uni and Paramount titles to hit or a few months for all the new titles from the holiday to be discounted.

you guys are all crazy. The best place to find BR disks is right under your nose...........AVS classifieds
post #12 of 287
The lack of deals is kinda sad. I have 42 blu-rays, every one bought brand new in the $10 to $14 range. But that was last year. The great bogo's are gone and as a result this year I haven't bought one blu-ray yet. Fyi, I don't consider 50% off $40 msrp a deal.

It's not the end of the world though, there's so many other forms of entertainment nowadays that it doesn't really matter too much. I'll just wait until the movies I want fall back into the $10-$14 range. Until then, no blu-ray purchases for me and my money will go elsewhere.

Crank did suck. That's why I don't have a copy.

Just to add about this price complaining people are doing. The stores can't sell them at the $10 and $15 prices that we have gotten happy seeing with Amazon's BOGOs. They have to have some time so that people will buy at retail and afford them the ability to do sales like they did last week where me and others on this forum ordered 9+ movies.

Sure some good prices show up here every once and awhile but a look over most of the time shows people trying to sell used discs for more than Amazon charges for them new.

some sellers are charging $4 to $5 for shipping to Canada when I know it doesn't cost more than $2 including the envelope. Most brand new movies are no cheaper than Amazon too.

It's been that price at retail since launch. If Amazon had it on sale for $330 then those who wanted it should have bought it considering the biggest sale came at Christmas this year when the Sony and Samsung players hit the $299 mark. One week it's on sale and the next week it isn't, hence the idea of a sale. It's about $420 this week at HH Gregg.

I've been slowly finding a few select titles at places like Frys and Best Buy under $15 the past few weeks. Just yesterday, I picked up "The Host" for $14.99 (along with standard dvds of The Godfather 1 and 2 for $4.99 each!) at Best Buy. Sure, it's nothing like the huge number of titles and great deals over the last Christmas buying season, but theer wasn't too many great deals in February of '07 either for titles of either format.

I fully expect a huge number of great deals next November/December on titles and hardware, especially considering how lousy the economy is doing and the anticipated sheer desperation for retailers to do better than late '07.

Just because BB didn't have a BD sale on 'this' week doesn't me there aren't any good deals.

Checkout www.towerrecords.com. Awesome price on POTC3, nearly 1/2 off!

My recent buys though I have watched few of them at my friends place.

1) Live Free or Die Hard - $17
2) Simpsons - $18
3) Shoot Em Up - $18
4) 3:10 to Yuma - $18
5) Hostel - $14
6) Resident Evil - $17
7) 7 movies from amazon (incl No Country for Old Men, I am Legend) - $130

The DVDs for some of these titles costs more or less the same.

One thing I can agree is we may hardly see BOGO sale in future.
tower records has some OK prices but then they also have some ridiculous ones.
Aliens vs. Predator $69!

need a BOG4 for that to be reasonable

Except Amazon cannot put it into your hands the moment you pay for it.

I never buy blu rays at BB.

I'd rather get them online, even if I have to wait on shipping. The cost savings makes up for the time.
This is still the beginning of the year and their usually not too many deals now, but the quarter is about to come up and hopefully the deals will come also. Then again with nobody to compete against, maybe they don't need the STATS!

Amazon has always been the most common go to place to get HDM, mostly because of the cometetive pricing and sometimes the super sales(BOGOs). Recently they been trying to trick us with the 50% off sales...off MSRP. It was bad being off MSRP's of $40.00, but the killer was all those titles were previously offered in the BOGOs.

None the less the deals will come...when? We don't know, but what we do know it's a vicious cycle and it will come again, just like a similar thread to this will pop up TOO!

Ahhh! Isn't life WONDERFULL!!!

I actually like waiting for them, the anticipation is fun.

This means we can kiss $499 for the BD-50 goodbye. Probably $599 when it hits the streets.

You visited a single B&M store and have become the authority on marketing and prices?
BB sucks for prices. Go to Wally world or Fry's for B&M. There are still plenty of discounts to be had even at BB occasionally. And of course on line Amazon with BOGO's and discounts and plenty of other on line vendors.
