Three ESPN X Games Events Will Stream Live on Samsung Gear VR

ESPN X Games on Samsung Gear VR

Thanks to a partnership with Samsung, ESPN’s X Games will feature its first ever live broadcast of events in VR. Dubbed “X Games Unframed,” the live broadcasts will feature three events at the annual extreme sports competition, which takes place in Minneapolis from July 13-16 2017.

VR seems particularly well-suited to the three featured events: Skateboard Vert,  Skateboard Street Amateurs, and BMX. VR experiences encourage looking in all directions, and when you have athletes flying through the air while performing complex moves, it practically guarantees that the VR viewing experience will offer compelling perspectives.

In order to watch live streams of the X-Games, you will need to use the Samsung Gear VR platform along with the VR Live Pass app. The events will be available in 48 countries including the U.S.

Per the ESPN Mediazone press release, these events will be captured using 360-degree cameras. Viewers will experience a “fully produced, multi-camera live stream experience that includes real-time graphics, X Games talent and feature segments integrated into Samsung VR.”

“X Games has always been a laboratory for innovation and progression, both for the world’s top action sports athletes and for ESPN’s production of events and use of technology,” said Tim Reed, vice president, ESPN X Games. “We are always pushing to create new and better ways for fans to experience and interact with X Games. Working with Samsung to produce these three great events for Gear VR is an awesome example of that.”
