As an entry level all-in-one non-integrated (no built-in BD player) it might be a good place to start. The speaker connections in the back of the receiver can take bare wire so you're not limited to proprietary speaker connections so yeah, you could dump the speakers down the road and really have a nice sounding system.
A good set of speakers can make a mediocre receiver sound great, but a bad set of speakers can make a great receiver sound mediocre.
