Surround sound system recommendations?

My surround sound receiver seems to have taken a dump so now I am looking for a surround sound system. It's an Onkyo 7.1. New one doesn't have to be 7.1 if it's just as good. (This one is 10+ years old). Not looking to spend gobs of $. Any recommendations?

Hard to help without a budget. How much does “gobs of money” equal in a hard number? Model # of your current receiver would be helpful to get an idea of the level of equipment you’re used to.

Equipment List
"A nice mid-fi system," according to an audiophile acquaintance.

You might want to take a look at the Onkyo TX-NR686. Excellent 7.2 receiver that supports Dolby Atmos and won't break the bank. The newer version of this one is the TX-NR696, but right now it is about twice as much.
