Just found Lee Ritenour - Six String Theory DVD on eBay for $49.99 in like new condition!

Congrats! That's an excellent price! It's an amazing sounding multi-channel mix with great songs and guest artists. I saw Lee Ritenour in Rockport, MA at the Shalin Liu Performance Center last June. We sat in the second row and the show was incredible! The venue is easily one of the most beautiful I've ever been to.

That is the best sounding multichannel mix I've ever heard. If you can find a cheap copy of the Overime blu-ray, that is worth picking up too.

Dammit... you know I gotta buy it now! Seems like just before the person who got it on ebay for $50 someone bought one (also on ebay) for $40 shipped for a new/sealed copy. So mad... even though I don't know who Lee Ritenour is and have never heard of this album until I read these posts...

Lee Ritenour - Six String Theory DVD

Have had a chance to listen to it several times now and it definitely lives up to the hype.
This is an excellent sounding disc. I would also go to say this is the cream of the crop out of all the Monster Super disc's.
If you can get your hands on it it's well worth having in your collection.
The sound quality is outstanding and the surround mix is very discreet.
It has quite a selection of tunes from rock to blues, fast and slow.
Also quite an impressive lineup of guest artists from Steve Lukather, BB King, Taj Mahal, Keb Mo, Robert Cray, Neil Schon, Slash & Vince Gill to name some.
The only thing I can think of that would possibly make this better would be remastering to lossless and have it on Blu-Ray in DTS-HD MA or LPCM 5.1
Highly Recommended!!

I'd never bought any of Porcupine Tree's music either until about seven years ago. Now I have all of their hi-res surround titles. Lightbulb Sun and Stupid Dream are among my favorites. Check out Steven Wilson's solo hi-res surround titles if you haven't already done that. They're all excellent IMO. Also check out Blackfield V on Blu-ray. It's a collaboration of Steven Wilson and Aviv Geffen.

I got a copy of this and listened to it last night. It's got an unusual story. They found tapes of a live Ray Charles concert, but the sound quality of the band was lacking. So they cut the vocals out and got another band (the Basie tribute band) to record the backing. I can see why they thought the Ray Charles concert was worth salvaging. The vocal performance is spectacular. The vocals are a bit flat sounding and you can hear the seams from them cutting them out occasionally in quiet passages. But it's acceptable sound quality. The new added band recording sounds very good with an enveloping surround sound. Overall, it sounds really good.

There are a couple of drawbacks though. First of all it sounds like the bass is an electric bass, not a stand up acoustic bass. That isn't right. But the biggest drawback is that they have by necessity eliminated all of Ray Charles's keyboard backing and replaced it with whoever plays piano in the Basie tribute band. The keyboards don't sound like either Charles or Basie. They're wimpy and generic. That's a shame because Ray Charles is as much about his piano as his voice.

So at the end of the day, this isn't really Ray Charles and it isn't really Count Basie. Neither of them had anything to do with the arrangements or the album itself. It's a cobbled together project combining a live Ray Charles vocal with a newly created band backing. If you just have a casual interest in Ray Charles and Count Basie, I'm sure you'd be very pleased with this. If you're a fan of theirs, you'll notice what's missing immediately. But it's still a worthwhile experiment, and those vocals really are amazing, even if the rest around them aren't quite right.

EDIT: It's interesting. Last night I pulled out my Sheffield Lab Harry James CDs and played them for the first time in a long time. With the Yamaha Stereo to 5.1 DSP, they sound REALLY good. Better than this 5.1 SACD and spunkier performances too. If anyone here doesn't have the Sheffield Lab Lincoln Mayorga and Harry James CDs, pick them up.

Carole King - Tapestry SACD
Tom Petty - Mojo Blu-ray
Allman Brothers - Idlewild South Blu-ray (Super Deluxe Edition)

The Idlewild South Super Deluxe Edition set is a must have for any ABB fan! Another fine compilation produced by the Bill Levenson who has produced many fine sets like Idlewild South.
