Julia Fischer, Netherlands Chamber Orchestra/Yakov Kreizberg - W. A. Mozart: Violin Concertos Nos 3&4, 5.0 SACD (PentaTone). First listen, really enjoyed it. Been picking up these Julia Fischer PentaTone Hybrid MC SACD releases for a few years now as I could, all quite nice. This one I've had kicking around for a year or so, but with being away so much, and it having been shoved up on top of a shelf, hadn't gotten around to listening to it. The performance is excellent, Julia Fischer is a noticeably exquisite violinist (even writing her own enjoyable cadenzas) and the Orchestra is superb. The recording is full and revealing, well mastered, of course, and the surround mix is more immersive than usual for classical recordings (in my experience). Really nice.

Yikes! There was a thread over at the Hoffman forum about the DVD-A recently. I guess we cleaned all the cheaper copies out! Both Discogs and Amazon sellers had them for $30 - $40 a week or so ago.

The Beatles, 5.1 Dolby-TrueHD Blu-ray. I've had this set for a few months now and have definitely listened to the multi-channel mix at least once but haven't listened to it at all for a couple months, anyway. I was listening to it last night, though, (giving it another go now) and was really blown away with just how excellent the multichannel mix was. The contrast between the fidelity of what we've be able to hear versus the fidelity Gilles was able to extract from the four-track masters was definitely more apparent on Sgt. Pepper, but the final product is at least as amazing here. And, the surround mix seems much more adventurous than Sgt. Pepper, but still in line with the original presentation.

Yes- The Yes Album BD
Yes- Relayer BD

IMO, Relayer might have the best SW mix out of all the Yes albums he’s done. Every other version I’ve heard sounded way too compressed, with all the instruments fighting each other. SW was able to bring out an amazing amount of detail that was buried. Superb job.

Thanks, yeah I looked on Amazon, EBay, Discogs.

Good point. IIRC, mine was around $30. It’s a matter of patience and timing with a lot of these releases. And the Boz album is definitely worth it.

BTW, the disc holders for Dig must be made out of steel wool. Check the discs carefully when you get them.

Jeff Beck: Blow by Blow. Multichannel.

This seems to be a staple around here. One of my faves. Interesting mix I was noticing today that on some songs the lead guitar was coming from the rear speakers.

Dig this one.

Yup. When it comes to to multichannel mixes of non live music, it's a balance of imagination and just plain sounding good. I don't care if it's "realistic" as long as it's enjoyable, and I suspect most of the other people on this thread feel the same way. I mean, a "discrete" mix isn't "real", but does it sound good is all that matters.
Even with live music, I'd probably enjoy "discrete" mixes as long as proper realistic mixes are also available.

I have five Jeff Beck SACDs and they seem to all have similar surround mixes, with prominent guitars, often lead, coming out the surrounds. I also don't mind even if my preference is for lead guitars to come out of the front left or right speakers.

That depends on how it's recorded. If it was recorded with isolated tracks, the mixer can pretend it's a studio album and place things wherever he wants. But if the original live performance was miked for a clear soundstage, to me that is even better. The Allman Bros set is fantastic because you can close your eyes and hear the exact placement of every member of the band. It's particularly important for the Allman Brothers because they have two drummers. I never realized that until I heard the multichannel mix and I could discern one from another by placement. I could even tell the different styles of the two drummers because they were separated. Most live albums aren't recorded as carefully as that one.

I think it's this one:

A few of us were able to get it for less than half price at Amazon last December.

The Blu Ray version is actually several different concerts. There is an older DTSCD that is a subset of that, but it costs almost as much, and I believe the opinion of people here is that it isn't as good. You can find it on ebay, but you might as well pony up the extra for the Blu Ray at that point, I think the DTSCD starts at $30, and goes up from there.
