Do you have the DVDA? Just curious if there is any noticable difference between the two.

I don't have either but do the have 25th Anniversary set on my Christmas wish list.

I just got the set yesterday and have only listened to the DVD. There are 3 CDs yet to be played. I'll be off to my son's home for the day pretty soon, so, I might listen to the main CD this weekend...

The LABEL on the DVD says, DOLBY 5.1 SURROUND & 24/96 HI-RES STEREO MIX (See added picture)

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Jeff Beck - Blow By Blow, 5.1 SACD (AP). So, put this on partly out of curiosity with the recent discussions of how players/receivers display what is on the Multi-Channel Area of SACDs, but was also just inspired to listen by the previous two posters. I started out by putting the 8500 into Pure Direct and doing a little walk around. There is definitely sound coming out of the centre speaker and the sub-woofer. Whatever the source for this mix it is being presented as 5.1. I think I had always assumed it was a Quad mix from the time of it's release, but I have to question that now, listening to it. Not just because it's on the disc as 5.1, but also the sound of it. Several factors--the aggressiveness and clarity of the low-end, the immersive quality of the mix, and the overall fidelity--have me wondering if it isn't a more recent creation. Regardless, it sounds damn good. Highly enjoyable.

I'm not getting any sound out of my center speaker even though the OPPO says it's 5.1, and that's what it reports on other quad recordings.

My SACD is from Acoustic Sounds: Product No.: CAPP 078 SA which the following site link notes this is a quad mix, as far as I can tell. https://www.quadraphonicquad.com/for...d-sound.23147/

I had to get up and put my ear close to the center speaker to convince myself I wasn't hearing a 5.1 mix

Hmmm. That's disturbing. I have that same Analogue Production's release. I did what you did the first time (put my ear right to the centre speaker), but just repeated the process (Pure Audio engaged), this time physically removing the left and right speakers from the equation and definitely sound out of the centre speaker. That's with a Cambridge Audio CX-UHD--HDMI to--Denon 8500.
Thanks for the link, I hadn't been able to find anything on the mix. I'm glad someone noted the quality of the low-end in one of those posts in the AP and second Japanese release, not out to lunch on that, anyway. I wonder if the multi-channel was really re-mastered for this release as suggested in one of the posts in that thread. My impression of the AP/AF multi-channel releases was they remastered the two-channel and just transferred the multi-channel. Might explain why it sounds so great, if they really did remaster it. Or, maybe that's just the way it is.

The Jeff Beck Group, 4.0 SACD (AF). 4.0 Quad on the cover, 5.0 from the CX-UHD OSD and Denon input information, nothing audible out of the centre speaker with my normal settings, switched to Pure Audio, no sound out of the centre and nothing from the sub-woofer, confirmed with physical removal of the left and right front speakers.
That out of the way, another enjoyable Jeff Beck album, not up to the quality of the still-yet-to-come Blow By Blow and Wired, but quality stuff. Mix-wise it's more of a typical Quad experience, which is to say Stereo in the front and sorta Mono Left and Mono Right on the back (Hey! it's Quadrophonic!), than the Blow By Blow mix which is more immersive. Still fun, nonetheless.

No, I was using the Denon Pure Audio setting, it should only put out what it is receiving, no processing of any kind, including Bass Management.

The Beatles, Dolby-True HD 5.1 96/24. Finally ordered the Abbey Road set today, decided I'd wait 'til Black Friday just to see, no special deals, but I'd waited long enough. Revisiting once again Giles' amazing, revealing, detailed, sweetly immersive, and faithful 5.1 mix for this classic and most favourite album of mine. Looking forward to what is to come.

The Dukes of Stratosphere - Psurroundabout Ride, LPCM 5.1 96/24 Blu-Ray. First listen. Drifted into a surround night and suddenly realized I hadn't listened to the 5.1 mix on this collection yet. I mean, WTF? You might think it might suffer in direct comparison to The White Album but, actually, a nice touchstone. The material, obviously, draws more from Sgt. Pepper and The Magical Mystery Tour, but the inspiration is still clear. The 5.1 mix does a great job of revealing the material, specifically in the great multi-channel advantage of spreading all the information out so it's easier to distinguish the individual parts and their relationship, but also in enhancing the tripiness of it all. Fun stuff.

Spoiler!

Dang, another SACD for the collection... Should be here by Dec 12

Bummer. I got an email from the seller. He was reinspecting the disc prior to shipping it and found a cloudiness to the disc. He said it played okay and he would cut the price or refund fully, up to me. So I'm taking a refund.

[Edit] Refund is in my account.

A couple of new SACD acquires that I'm enjoying very much.
Both lean towards the Progressive Rock genre with a smooth edge from groups I wasn't familiar with before.
RPWL - World Through My Eyes Has a slight late Beatles style on a few cuts, very well done.

U.K. - U.K. A bunch of players well known from other supergroups.

I don't think it matters how the album was originally recorded. It only identifies that the disc is now a SACD.

Wasn't DSD primarily used by Sony to digitally back-up their analogue taped masters?

An SACD is by definition DSD. I always thought the DSD logo meant that it was recorded to DSD and mixed live, since you can't edit DSD. Putting DSD on the label just because it's an SACD seems redundant to me.
