What did you think of this? I love the Los Lonely Boys and this album is an all-time favorite, but remember this surround mix as being pretty bad, as in double stereo.

Yeah, one of my favorites too It sounded okay but not as good as some of the surround mixes we've seen posted here. I did like it a bit better than the stereo version. I was a bit bummed when I started to watch the first video, Heaven and found out it was in stereo! That was the first song I heard by them and it's my favorite.

The bass is a little thumpy and hollow sounding, but otherwise quite decent SQ. I would say Michael Hutchence sounds better than the band, SQ wise.I don't have Atmos set up, too lazy, so I can't give an opinion on that. Worth the $17.99.

The BBB Featuring Bernie Dresel - Bern Bern Bern (MCH BR LPCM 5.1 96k )
Just got the BluRay from Bernie's website today, it floored me!
The SQ of the recording is first class, maybe because Bernie is the drummer but the drum sound in great, the brass shimmer of the cymbals is near the best I've ever heard. The immersive soundspace of the Native Auro 3D recording is impressive, I only have a couple Native Auro 3D music recordings but this one has killed them and along with the Atmos ones I've heard. This despite the fact that my overhead ceiling speakers are positioned in the traditional 4 speaker Atmos layout.
Beyond the technology and recording tricks, the music is wonderful. Big Band style with lot's of horns and I'm a horny kind of guy. And just a tiny taste of modern techno-jazz mixed in.
I can't recommend this recording highly enough, and at $30 for the BluRay direct from Bernie it's a steal. A couple bucks more if you want a personally signed one.

Mary Fahl - from the dark side of the moon
Buy direct http://maryfahl.com

Very nice re-interpretation of this classic. I really enjoyed my first listen to it just now, pretty sure it will get many more plays.

Her vocals really shine on large Electrostats.

The mix is quite good, lots of discrete use of the full surround field. Overall sound quality was more 'laid-back' than I would like, but still very good. Maybe I'm used to SW mix-style ;-)

Even received a signed copy:

Bruce Soord - All This Will Be Yours
Deluxe edition with DVD (multiple high-rez mixes, including multiple variations of 5.1 DTS (24/96), I play the 'Bass-managed' version on my 5.4.4 setup)

Bruce is becoming a really good multichannel mixer, with his recent Pineapple Thief work, and now his own album.

This is very nice music, varied and creative. The overall mix is active in subtle ways that augment the pieces in unique ways, and his use of surround is masterful. Guess nothing like knowing your own music to achieve great surround mixes.

The audio quality from the 24/96 5.1 DTS stream is actually excellent. He squeezed the most out of this medium.

Not really a fan of Wham!, but this isn't bad, plus I'm more open minded about music than I was years ago.
Not a particularly discrete or adventuresome mix. But it is very immersive and sounds good.

Albert Collins - Live from Austin, Tx., 5.1 DTS DVD. Recording of an Austin City Limits appearance. Quite enjoyable performance, everyone seems to be into it, tight, funky, sweet solos (not just Collins), all good.
Surprisingly immersive mix, was expecting more a front focused concert mix, especially from an old TV show but much more of an in-the-middle-of-the-band sort of mix. I do question some of the choices on placement as one of the other two main soloists Reese Wynans, on Organ, is positioned behind the left shoulder and Derek O'Brien, Guitar, is behind the right, but on stage they're basically lined-up with Collins with the rest of the band behind. They do make the wise choice of pretty much keeping all the instruments in the same location throughout the show.
Could be more dynamic, ended-up at some dbs lower than usual for a Concert DVD/Blu-ray. The 48/16 LPCM two-channel seemed to require even more level reduction from a brief listen.
Video is not great naturally, but good for what it is, shows it's age in lack of resolution not degradation. Close-ups are pretty clear, of course, and there's some fine camera work of the fretwork (man, does he get that capo way down the neck sometimes).
Overall, quite impressive in content and presentation.

Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown - Live from Austin, Tx., 5.1 DTS. First listen to both this and the previous disc. Again, from Austin City Limits. Chose Collins as the opening act for this evenings show and he set a high bar for content and presentation but, as I suspected, Gatemouth exceeded it. The sound is slightly better and, as amazing as Collins is, the performance here is somehow just something more. Gatemouth's delicate touch on the guitar is something else and watching him casually, confidently lay those licks down is amazing. He also hauls out the electric fiddle (Yay!) and it's fun watching him get that amazing sound out of it, and he does a little pizzicato, as well. But there's so much more to his music than that and the great interplay between the players in this tight band display it well. It's like if Zappa played Texas Swing, he even conducts the band at at least one point.
The stage and sound mix are exactly the same as the Collins' disc except the other soloing instruments are Saxophone (left shoulder) and Keyboards/Organ (Right). It almost like your listening position is Collins'/Brown's microphone.
I was pretty excited when I stumbled across these two CD/DVD sets and, while they're definitely not flawless (damn dynamic compression), they pretty much exceeded my reasonably high expectations in every way.

I ordered this back at the end of April from Import CD but it was on backorder. Finally got it last week and have to say the surround mix of On An Island gives me a whole new appreciation for that album. Very nicely done

Hmm, I'm interested as I like George Michael generally and Wham! is okay and would definitely buy if it's a discrete mix. If it's immersive and sounds good, then I guess that's reason enough to pick this one up. Always thought his first two solo albums would be great in surround.
