If the disc player has a stereo analog output which you have connected to the selected stereo analog input, its signal is digitized using the AVR's stereo ADC. That digitized signal can then be processed by the AVR's DSP.

If the disc player has a multichannel analog output which you have connected to the AVR's multichannel analog input (not one of the stereo inputs), those analog signals are connected to the AVR's analog preamps.

Does this help?
Yes, if I follow you correctly I hear you saying that since I only use the sacd player 5.1 multichannel analog outs that when the player sends just a 2 channel sacd through 2/5 analog inputs, it should remain analog with my avr conversion?

Yeah, but I don't know enough to even understand what the terms mean. I missed out on the OPPOs because I hesitated between which model to get and waited until another, "better" one came along. I'm hoping my (relatively) new Sony X800 will satisfy my audio needs.

Here's a list posted about a month ago, so not too dated, if this helps at all. I noticed the Sony 800M2 that SMD mentioned is not there yet, but you can look it up individually. Each player on the list has its capabilities listed at the top, what shiny discs they play, what version of HDR they support etc. I'm not sure how comprehensive this list is, and you can probably scratch off the Samsung player mentioned as they're getting out of the UHD player business.

Has anyone seen any new options lately. My denon player is starting to have issues with the drawer opening and closing. All I am seeing are the 2 Sony players and the pioneer elite previously mentioned. Just want to make sure I am not missing anything.
