Dolby Atmos Blu-ray Review: Thoughts and Opinions

The Beatles: Abbey Road Dolby Atmos Blu-ray Review: The Basics

The Beatles:- Abbey Road 50th Anniversary Blu ray

Probably the most eagerly awaited release of the year, maybe the last 10 years due to the new Atmos mix on the blu ray.

Remixed for 2019 by Giles Martin son of Legendary original Beatles producer George Martin.

Abbey Road’s Super Deluxe box set presents 40 tracks – including “The Long One” Trial Edit & Mix for the album’s epic Side 2 medley – on three CDs
(stereo) and one Blu-ray disc (Dolby Atmos, 96kHz/24 bit high resolution stereo, and 96 kHz/24 bit DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1).
The four discs are housed in a slip-sleeved 12” by 12” 100-page hardbound book with McCartney’s foreword; Martin’s introduction; insightful, in-depth chapters written by Beatles historian,
author, and radio producer Kevin Howlett covering the months preceding The Beatles’ Abbey Road sessions, track-by-track details and session notes,
the cover art and photo shoot, and the album’s reception upon its release; plus an essay by music journalist and author David Hepworth looking at the album’s influence through 50 years.
The gorgeous book is illustrated with rare and previously unpublished photographs, including many taken by Linda McCartney; never before published images of handwritten lyrics, sketches,
and a George Martin score; Beatles correspondence, recording sheets, and tape boxes; and reproduced original print ads.
And now what you've all been waiting for this review is based on the Atmos mix.

1: Come Together :- The album opens up with John Lennon's rock tune. The bass on this track is outstanding, good sounds in all speakers.
2: Something :- George Harrison's classic, this one sounds so smooth. Great vocals, good solid bass. Lovely strings on this outstanding track.
3: Maxwell's Silver Hammer :- Jovial, ditty. Synthesisers in rears, guitars and harmony vocals sound incredible.
4: Oh! Darling :- Sounds like an old blues/R&B track. Harmony and vocals in all speakers, great sound.
5: Octopus's Garden :- Ringo's great track gives us some fun. Sounds all round, vey good sounding track.
6: I Want You (She's So Heavy):- Heavy track, Guitars at the sides good vocals with excellent drums.
7: Here Comes The Sun :- Another George track, this one is beautiful, Georges vocals are so clear its like he is right in front of you, great sound.
8: Because :- Laid back, great sounding track. The vocals and the space of the sound is incredible. The Moog Synthesiser is outstanding on this track.
9: You Never Give Me Your Money :- Soft track, nice piano start with good vocals, piano starts in the front left, Pauls voice is in the center but also in the side channels, impressive.
Ringo in front right. What sounds like doorbells in the side left speaker.
10: Sun King :- Reminds me of an early Fleetwood Mac song. The first notes of the guitar and bass, Guitar then pans to back rear speakers, this track is very heavy on Atmos sounds.
Cricket in the rear speaker.
11: Mean Mr. Mustard :- This is the first track of the Medley (Long One) jovial ditty.Tambourine side left speaker another good Atmos track.
12: Polythene Pam :- Upbeat and Great use of all speakers!
13: She Came In Through The Bathroom Window :- Sounds like old Beatles > Harmonies in the rear, Tambourines in the side again.
14: Golden Slumbers :- Slow lovely song. Piano and strings at the front alongside Pauls voice
15: Carry That Weight :- End of the medley is a good tune to end with. Nothing solid in the Atmos department but great sound overall.
16: The End :- And as the song says; this was the End. Good to have a Ringo solo. Harmony vocals in the rears Additional guitars in the side channels.
17: Her Majesty :- Pauls voice starts to pan and then the track finishes before it goes all the way round. A fun play with the sound.

Summary
The packaging for this set is outstanding the booklet has great pictures/information. The 3 CD's have so many tracks / outtakes/ demo sessions, which make this a must have set. The Atmos is just the icing on the cake, for anyone with an Atmos set up this is an absolute must have set.
Atmos just allows the music to breathe, and without doubt you hear things that you have never heard before, Incredible.

Giles has done a great job with the Atmos he hasn't just put sounds anywhere just because he can.

AUDIO SCORE = 9.5 out of 10
BASICS: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Sounds Pretty darn good to me!! Can't wait to hear it!!

You can read all about it here: https://hdmoviesourcebluray.blogspot...os-review.html

Love Abbey Road, may be my favorite from Beatles.

Haven't even considered looking for 5.1 of Beatles but ... Now, I will !

One of the best things about HRA and HR Surround is what becomes available is often really great to begin with.

Be nice to just have DISC-4 (Blu-ray): Dolby Atmos mix of whole album / 5.1 surround of whole album / hi-res stereo mix of whole album

I'm glad I checked in on this board today. I had no idea this release was even happening, and I was able to order a copy from Amazon for delivery today. I'm excited for the Atmos mix in particular.

I won't get my set until tomorrow- but hearing over at a few forums ( quadraphonic & steve hoffman) of some people having playback issues with the blu-ray. The players not recognizing the disc. hopefully this won't be a much bigger issue. I've had no issues with pepper and the WA, so we'll see.

I'm really hoping to read some reviews here from our AVS members on the surround mix with Dolby Atmos!!

Have read that it plays fine with NO issues on Oppo 103 and 203 players!!

Some positive reviews from QQ: ATMOS ONE TIME THROUGH: He's dancing jumping up and down and crying, crying, crying because the bass.....I said Bass....is absolutely sensational....along with the clarity and what seems like infinite space....like a balloon expanding and contracting.........."I've never heard this before."......and I'm crying. They have made this one new.

Wow! Just ended my first run!
My mouth is open!
What an update to a mix.
It blows away many mixes Steven Wilson has done....I say that, because Steven always tried to hold the overall spirit of a recording.
But this mix is a true update.
So fat and warm and the rears are used so very thoughtful!
One of the best surround remixes I heard.
I know we are all to fast with winners, but this time it is so true.
I have a well treated room and it sounds...bombastic!

Got mine today and listened to it through once and my favorite tracks a few more times, and I have to say so far, so good. It's a huge upgrade from Sgt Peppers and from White Album as well. I love everything about it pretty much, starting from the disc being a blu-ray and not a freaking DVD that comes scratched up from being placed in paper sleeves. Then, the authoring is excellent, with only a brief Apple logo and then straight to the main page which includes all tracks and all audio options: stereo (default unfortunately), DTS-HD MA (5.1 although it doesn't indicate it), and Atmos. The menu/track listing also doesn't cut to a screen saver which is great. There are minimal visualizations (small bird flying around, etc.) and no stupid animated menus or other gimmicky features. Just clean, simple, and functional. I so appreciate that.

I like the surround mixes a lot. Giles finally did a good job (too bad about the others, especially Sgt Pepper). The mix is very discrete generally, with minimal lead vocals coming out of all channels (haven't noticed that at all), no panning (except in the 30 second song "Her Majesty" at the end), center channel not used exclusively for vocals (which I'm happy about), and overall good use of surrounds so that they're consistently utilized to keep you surrounded by the music. It's closer to an "aggressive" surround mix than, say, a Steven Wilson surround mix which IME has often had surround channels used less consistently, which I like and appreciate. And the audio quality is great overall. This is a definite buy (got mine for $82 shipped from Deep Discount)!

just got the set delivered. Popped in the blu-ray real quick and played a few select tracks. No issues. even watched the something video, again no issues.
So I am a bit relieved. Using Oppo 103.

others are still posting issues with this disc. some say it played ok first time, but then wouldn't play again. first I've heard of that- usually a disc is problematic from the get-go.

Found this on my doorstep when I got home tonight.....

Played through without any issues on my OPPO UDP-203. I went back and picked a few selections to play again.
I enjoyed the surround sound mix. To me, it's not too much, and adds a fullness to the sound.

It's nice to be able to change it on the fly. Even though I do not have Dolby Atmos, I liked that choice the best. (It defaults to Dolby TrueHD)

Just a note FWIW, the Atmos audio is 24/48. The DTS-MA is 24/96 and the LPCM is 24/96.

Going through my second pass of the Atmos mix and it is indeed one of the best remixes I’ve ever heard.
Totally renews these classics and makes them feel contemporary, as this is timeless creative work.

One hears layers of sound that were previously buried in the 2ch original mix.

I tried to listen to the new 2ch mix, but it was such let-down after the Atmos, I gave up mid track.

We need more classics remixed into Atmos. And all new multichannel albums should definitely use it.

This is how Pepper and The White Album should have been done! The ATMOS Mix SQ is excellent especially the BASS and Drums. I like the vocals in the center(YMMV). Now if only we could get our hands on the Pepper ATMOS Mix.

Needless to say I had no problem playing the disc on my Oppo 203. I've had a chance to listen to the DTS-HD MA and Atmos version and they both sound great! Having said that, I personally think the Atmos version is the "Definitive" surround version! While the higher resolution DTS-HD MA 5.1 sounds awesome, you just don't have the additional surround elements like you do in the Atmos mix. The Atmos mix just brings everything to an entirely different level. The soundfield is opened and expanded with yet another layer of discrete sound. The Atmos mix really needs to be heard and makes this album shine, IMO. Some other noteworthy observations on the mix are how clear and present the vocals are. The main vocals have authority and are right up front and center. No soft or buried vocals on this mix! Also as others have stated the bass has some real punch and excellent use of the bottom end. The use of the surrounds is also very discreet with backing vocals and instruments all around. Bottom line a very engaging mix!! I personally think this mix is a winner, and an example of what albums could and should sound like.

This was pretty awesome to listen to. Here’s to hoping more great albums get the Atmos treatment!

Maybe it's just me, but the SQ on the stereo mix seems a bit better, crisper. Usually when I have a surround version of an album, I pretty much listen to it exclusively, but I think with Abbey Road, I will be listening to the multi channel and stereo mixes.

My World Beating System!
Spoiler!

ok played the atmos mix twice and the 5.1 twice ( on different systems). Used oppo 103 & Sony-x800. No issues each time. So I lucked out on that.
The 5.1 mixis really nice, no complaints.
but the Atmos mix is where this disc really shines. Has to be one of the best multi-channel music mixes I've heard. Highly recommended.

Does anybody know what the actual technical specs of the Dolby TrueHD "Atmos" mix are? Is it say: 5.1.2, 5.1.4, 7.1.2, 7.1.4, etc...

Cheers
