Is the Sony X800 still a solid/cheap option for Hi-Res?

I think they came out with a new model that has Dolby Vision. I am not too concerned about this would use it for audio.

I see them on Ebay for pretty cheap.

Anything else I should be looking at to play SACD's over HDMI? I had bought an X800 but returned it after some issues. Turned out it was my Denon X1400 that had a bad HDMI board.

Thinking about jumping back in for some multi channel audio fun.

Should be fine as long as it doesn’t have disc freezing issues. That seems to be the most common complaint. Make sure the seller has a return policy in case of problems.
You might want to get a refurb if they’re still selling them. The disc problems have been addressed on those from what I’ve read.
Other than that, the Sony x700 does SACD but not DVD-A.
There aren’t many other cheap options out there unless you want to buy something used.

I'm fine buying used. The Sony probably will be. Anything else you'd recommend?

Your options are pretty limited if your talking $150ish for a universal player.

A used oppo 103 will set you back a little over $300 I would imagine and doesn't do 4K.

I reject your reality and substitute my own.

I'm open to move the budget around if it's worth it. I always wanted an oppo but being stuck at 1080p idk.

Yea 4K is a requirement for me. You could do an Oppo 203 or 205 but those prices are outrageous.

Hard to beat the price on the Sony X800's.

Yeah I would love to get one but agreed, those prices are too high for the usage it would get from me.

@whiteboy714, I have had m X800 for a while, and only froze once. Solid player and pretty good apps. What is your budget? How much 4K media do you have? How much 4K do you watch? IF 4K is not currently needed, you could get an OPPO 103 here:
https://www.avsforum.com/forum/210-v...-free-kit.html
I had an OPPO 103, and loved it, wish I would not have gotten rid of it, as it has apps, the OPPO 203 does not. Love the quality build of the OPPO.

I use my Shield for 4k. I guess it just seems odd to buy a disc player that is limited to 1080p. The off chance though I would even watch a UHD disc I have an Xbox.

I guess it is something to consider. Before they all disappear.

Okay great, that is why I asked about strictly 4K. The X800 is great for its use, but the Oppo is quite expensive. I mentioned the Oppo 103 as it does multi channel audio as well as SACD and DVD-A.

Denon DBT-1713 is an option (not 4k) that can be found as low as $150. The Sony X800 would still be the better choice IMO.

Thanks man. That also looks like a pretty solid choice.

I think the X800 doesn't support, like many (all?) Sony players, DVD-A? What are the best 4k/HDR/3D/SACD/DVD-A players out there? I think there's a Pioneer that's huge and expensive (although less than a used Oppo UDP 203 haha) but not sure what else is available new nowadays.

The X800 does support DVD-A.

The best way to listen to music is in 5.1 imho.

That was prior to the X800 & X1000ES. These are truly universal.

Hi,

I have the X700 which I guess is actually newer and supports Dolby Vision but no DVD-A. It plays SACD great and 3DBD. It was $150 on sale at Walmart. Supposedly it claims HD Audio playback from USB files but when I tried that it wasn't gapless.

I would not buy the X800 used because of the reliability issues that were reported.

I use a old Mac mini with JRiver 23 for High Res audio and it sounds so good it can hypnotize me if I'm in the right mood. I've never heard better audio. JRiver is amazing.

If you have any old computer (Mac, PC, Linux) I would recommend trying the free trail of Jriver. I guess HTPC type stuff isn't for everyone and I understand that but it's really super.

Yeah I have had HTPC's for years and Jriver is how I listen to HD-Audio, but that is for Flac. This thread was talking about discs (SACD) which as far as I know can't be played on PC's.
But because I like the HTPC so much better then slapping in a disc, I decided to buy an old player that is able to rip discs, and just play them back from the HTPC.

Very Cool.

The only SACD I have is Dark Side of the Moon. Which I don't still need as I got the Blu Ray of DSoTM from the immersion set (and it's easy to convert that into lossless Flac.)

To play SACD, the X700 or X800 is good.

I bought an X800 last fall for $200. I now see that the X800M is available for about the same price. How is the M better? (The salesperson at BB, where I bought my X800 and the X800M is now for sale, doesn't seem to know anything!) And, Yes, it does play DVD-A.

Looks like Dolby Vision is the main upgrade.
