Are there any contemporary surround sound releases?

I don't know about you guys but just about every surround sound album I have is a remaster/remix of something that was originally created many years ago. And like some of you guys, I also have a few surround sound albums that Steve Wilson has directly been involved in (Porcupine Tree and Blackfield). But that's about as contemporary as it gets.

So I'd really like to know if there are any contemporary artists who are actively creating new music (of any genre except classical) in surround sound?

Cheers

One of my favorite groups, Riverside, released one of their recent (2015) albums in 5.1 on a DVD included in this special edition set: https://www.amazon.com/Love-Fear-Tim.../dp/B01FH8WUSY

Even though it is not high-res, the sound is excellent and the surround mix is very good. Of course, I love the music anyway, but this one is a great album.

The musical style could be characterized as Prog Rock, but with a strong melancholy tinge. The leader is a great singer as well.

Booka Shade - Galvany Street is mixed in Atmos. Not really my style of singing/lyrics, but the music sounds awesome. Wish there were instrumental versions.

Styx - The Mission from 2017
David Gilmour - Rattle That Lock from 2015
...on blu ray in 5.1 and I'd recommend them both. But yeah, not near as many new MC releases as us folks would like.

A couple other artists that have been issued surround mixes with new albums in the past couple of years

Dream Theatre
Anathema
The Pineapple Thief
Opeth
BT
Ayreon
Coldplay

Of course, 15-20 years ago there would of been a lot of artists issuing albums in surround.

Just got that boxed set in the mail. Talk about a fun unboxing. A letter with a French postcard in it, a monogrammed guitar pick, a small poster, Milton's Paradise Lost volume 2 in a very nice binding. It was like the physical discs were an afterthought all the way at the back. Listen to it tonight or tomorrow. You get a lot for your money on this album.

Didja read thru this OTHER Thread re BD Audio Releases:
https://www.avsforum.com/forum/112-s...io-titles.html

Fol. website maintains a Database of ALL Releases of a particular Disc, so you can see if it is a Remaster or Re-Release. Note that you can search for very specific recording media and genre:

Fol. websites specifically address SACD and BD-A Releases & Reviews:

Great idea (I did the same thing for DVD-A) but you haven't updated the list in the first post (since 2010!) which is ideally where you could add titles. Discogs is great and all but it is a bit of a hassle still and you have to sift through a lot of irrelevant stuff to find the stuff that you are interested in. The DVD-A thread I started has an updated list in the first post which is handy (heck, I use it myself from time to time), would be nice to have a similar blu-ray thread. SACD of course has SA-CD.net which seems pretty comprehensive.

I don’t really understand why this has not become more of a thing particularly with electronic musicians.

If you are into Anathema and Opeth, id check out Katatonia. They have had some 5.1 releases

Absolutely, Katatonia should have been on the list. They have released their last several albums in surround, along with re-issuing a couple of older albums as well.

I bought the Suzanne Ciani album “Live Quadraphonic” earlier this year.

http://www.cykik.com/quad

It is sold out now on line, but you can still buy it at Ace Hotels.

You can also stream it if you are an Amazon Prime member.

Several classical labels/artists still release their current recordings on hybrid SACDs, which include SACD surround, SACD stereo, and CD stereo. I really enjoy multi-channel classical, and it's a selling point for me. Listening to the new Wooden Prince/Miraculous Mandarin Suite by Susanna Mälkki/Helsink Philharmonic as I write this.

Useful to know but the scope of this topic is about discovering 'contemporary' surround sound releases....

There are quite a few GREAT contemporary surround releases as DSD files I have found on nativedsd.com
I have no connection with them, but I have downloaded lots of superb music there, here is an awesome example:
Aeon Trio "Elegy". It is from a label I would also highly recommend, TRPTK.
They feature the fantastic cellist Maya Fridman. She is central to the Aeon Trio, along with pianist Atzko Kohashi, and double bassist Frans van der Hoeven.
The sound quality is only second to the inspired performance. Stunning.
The problem for me is that I do not have any way to play multi channel surround DSD files on my system unless they are on a SACD.
But you can download the stereo and multi channel files from that site and play either, like me, you can save the M/C files for when you do have the equipment capability.
There is a LOT more music available there, I can make other recommendations if anybody is interested. I promise, IF you listen to this performance it will be in regular rotation for many of you to enjoy as I do.
God Bless,
Wayne

While the albums are several years old, I do have SACD or DVD-A from the following artists:
Depeche Mode - Playing the Angel (SACD)
Ministry - Animositisomina (DVD-A)
Pixies - Trompe le Monde (2 channel SACD)
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon (Well known SACD release)
Pink Floyd - Wish you were Here (recent reissue of SACD)
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral (SACD)

Vinyl, tape, digital... I don't care as long as I can listen to my music...

Hmmm....

With the 'slight' exception of: Ministry, Animositisomina [originally released 2003] and Depeche Mode, Playing the Angel [originally released 2005] all the others are way too old to be considered contemporary.

Not sure if this belongs here, but there have been released a few Atmos Blu ray audio discs, from R.E.M., Kraftwerk, INXS, in TrueHD.

All old bands with old albums originally released years ago!

Why aren't new 'contemporary' artists releasing their albums in surround sound?

Try "Polarity, an Acoustic Jazz Project" by the Hoff Ensemble.
This is great sounding music on the 2L label. Brilliant hi res stuff here.
You can find it a few places, here is where I downloaded it:
https://2l.nativedsd.com/albums/2L14...c-jazz-project

There is some amazing multi channel music being made/recorded today.
God Bless,
Wayne

Also on the 2L label, there are several works by Ola Gjeilo in surround sound. "Piano Improvisations" is a fantastic sounding work.
Being on blu ray, at lovely hi res, you will drool over the sound coming out of his piano.
I hope this helps anybody who is actually seriously seeking to find contemporary music wonderfully recorded in surround sound.
I am ALL ABOUT surround, do not care for POS, poor old stereo, at all, only for listening to with my DAP and ciems on the bed.
BUT
Since I am getting no response at all here, I am thinking the kind of music I am posting is not what is being looked for, which is fair enough, even though any genre except classical was asked for. Perhaps this thread is rather for bemoaning the fact that Taylor Slow or Bouncey Knowles are not putting out their pop music in surround?
{And why would record producers bother since MOST people out there are not even listening to music from a CD or a lossless file, they are listening to MP3s and streaming????}
God Bless,
Wayne

Piano again, this one on the previously mentioned TRPTK label.
"For Mattia" by composer and pianist Douwe Eisenga.
VERY engaging music, beautifully played and the recording is superb.
Again, I cannot listen to it in surround, but if you can I HIGHLY recommend this guy.
And from the same fantastic label, Maya Fridman again, this time it is "Red Velvet" which kinda blows my mind. More avant-garde than accessible to me. Once again, modern cello (probably too modern for me) and great recording.
God Bless,
Wayne

You get video along with it but the DTS mix on Eric Clapton's several Crossroads Festival blu-rays is usually pretty good. Hard to tell how long it take for the 2019 show to be released, but meanwhile the 2010 outdoor (Chicago) show and 2013 indoor (Madison Square Garden) version have some nice contrasts.
