The Band s/t in 5.1

One of the greats is finally coming out in 5.1, with a 50th Anniversary Deluxe edition across a number of formats.

Yes, the 5.1 is only in the deluxe box with vinyl, so cut your bellyaching in advance! It’s over $100 at the point of sale but if history is any guide, it will come down a lot. I got Big Pink for around $50 a few months after it’s release so patience is key.

The blu-ray audio includes a 5.1 surround sound mix and a hi-res stereo mix of the album (the latter is presumably the new stereo mix). In addition the six bonus tracks from the first CD are also included and mixed to 5.1.

I pre-ordered this several days ago from Amazon UK.
Classic album that to me, is part of The Standard Repertoire of required listening regardless of genre.

Thanks for the tip, just preordered mine at Amazon UK also. Came out to only 78 GBP, which is about $95, shipped. Great deal! Only other places I've seen it online is at the Band's online store and Import CD/Deep Discount, which have it at around $128 + shipping.

Guess it's the exchange rate but I got a notice that the box set was shipping today and I was charged just under $100 USD. Still a good price I guess.

Mine a bit late from Amazon UK, scheduled to arrived this Thurs, the 21st.
Many who ordered from US already have them at a very good price, depending on when you pre-ordered, ~$108
My UK came out to ~$96.
When I pre-ordered, US was like $145.

Anymore I'm not in a hurry but a $12 diff is nothing.

For me it's not just the price, it's the SPACE, I don't want such a big package. Ah well, Russian bootleggers to the rescue ha ha
OR buy it and sell off the vinyl etc

Wow, that was fast shipping!

I listened to it a bit last night, although not at the volume I wanted, and thought that the surround mix was decent but not great. The main reason is that there are some tracks where there is almost nothing going on in the surrounds for long stretches, until suddenly you hear some instrument or other. I call that a Stephen Wilson surround mix, in that there isn't always constant or near constant use of the surrounds, and when they're used it's for a very discrete sound or instrument that may not play continuously so you have a lot of the song in 3.1 rather than 5.1. But other tracks use the surrounds more consistently/aggressively, which I prefer.

Anyway, I'm going to listen to it more today, at the "proper" volume, so hopefully I will like it more. I did like the design/authoring of the blu-ray, which is super simple, all on one page. No intros, FBI warnings, corporate logos, etc. It goes straight to the main page which shows all of the tracks (including a documentary video I believe), the three different audio tracks, and the album cover. Also, the 5.1 DTS HD-MA track is the default track which is a nice touch.

Just listened to entire album, including the bonus tracks (also in 5.1), and I have to change my initial assessment. This is an excellent surround mix. It actually uses the surround channels quite a lot throughout. Has a guitar solo from the right surround on the last track which some may not like, but I don't mind. Only complaint is that the vocals in the centre channel are louder than I'd like, overpowers the L and R channels a bit. Still, I'd rate it a 4.5 out of 5 stars.
