Question 7.1 DTS HD-MA on a 5.1.2 with front height speakers: noob question

Hi!

I'm sorry for the following noob question

Is philosophically acceptable playing a 7.1 DTS HD-MA track on a 5.1.2 setup with front height speakers? Or should I switch to the 5.1 track and leave FHL and FHR off?

I mean... The additional channels of a 7.1 track should be surround back channels, so I expect that firing them from front height speakers is an evil thing... am I wrong?

Thanks.

Depends on how you do it. If you simply place the 2 surround-back speakers high up on the front wall, then sounds that were intended to come from behind you will instead come from high up in front of you. Why would you deliberately have sound come from the wrong direction? Instead, you can re-assign the 2 surround-back speakers to be height speakers. Then the 2 speakers high up on the front wall will get extracted height information when you use one of the upmixers (Dolby Surround or DTS Neural:X). Information from the Side & Rear channels will be combined and sent to the Surround speakers. Rear channel info won't come from the speakers high up on the front wall.

Of course the front height speakers are confingured as height speakers on my denon! I was just wandering if DTS HD-MA had "height information". Good news then

In that case it doesn't make sense to ask about playing back surround-back channels from front height speakers.

Depending on the model number of your Denon AVR (which you haven't confirmed) and its capabilities you should place the the two additional speakers behind you.

It's a x2600h, front height speakers are connected to surround back channel and properly configured as fornt heights.Obviously I can't move theme, they are there for a reason (Atmos).

That would only have been obvious if you had mentioned it in your first (second or even third) post...
