Playing 4-channel audio files on an OPPO

Well I've just backed-up a 4-channel quadraphonic disc to a lossless 4-channel pcm.wav file and when I tried playing it with my OPPO UDP-203, it doesn't want to know!

This has reminded me to ask (or vent) the question.... Why can't the OPPO's play lossless 4-channel audio files.... It's a real pain?

Does the 203 play 4.0 quad DSD files? I recently ripped a number of 4.0 SACDs and they play fine with my 103. I set the 103 to PCM so the DSD files are converted by the 103 so I can use Dirac. But they will play in DSD when the 103 is set to DSD. But the Emotiva XMC-1 processes them as direct DSD not allowing Dirac.

Maybe send Oppo an email detailing the issues you're having trying to play 4.0 pcm.wav files.

Bill

My SACD collection and HRAudio.net Library, getting larger as my wallet gets smaller ;-).

I don't think I've tried playing a 4-channel SACD to DSD file back-up on the 203. I'll have to give it a go and report back!

Just to clarify I'm playing files off of several WD My Passport 2 TB hard drives. Not sure if it matters though. I also have multi-channel PCM files that play fine. I'm not sure if they are wav files though. I'll look once Steven Wilson's The Raven That Refused To Sing Blu-ray is finished .

Well. I thought I'd try and kill "two birds...." and all that, and use an application called 'Media Center' to generate a 4-channel DSD64 stream from the original 4-channel pcm.wav file I backed-up earlier today, and... my OPPO UDP-203, it doesn't want to know!

Code:

I'll try the same 4-channel dsd and pcm.wav files with my OPPO BDP-103 tomorrow and report back.

I'll begin by saying that I haven't got round to playing the 4-channel dsd and pcm.wav files with my OPPO BDP-103 yet.

But interestingly, when I encoded the '4-channel pcm.wav' file to a '4-channel.flac' file, I can confirm it plays perfectly in the OPPO UDP-203. So that's got around that particular issue!

I'll move onto the '4-channel pcm.wav' file playback issue soon...
