A multichannel DSD-capable DAC.

I have a few:
miniDSP U-DAC8 (pcm only)
OKTO DAC8 Pro
exaSound e8v2

No crossover in DACs. Bass management before or after or not at all.

So, for the DSD DAC, you run 5.1 channels full range?

In the case of SACD, the DSD stream is technically able to offer six full range (20Hz – 50kHz) channels

You could always seek out a used ICBM from Outlaw Audio for bass management.

Yikes! I haven't heard of this unit since the embryonic days of SACD when the only way to access it was using all analog outs with not bass management; hence the Outlaw unit.

I guess if you have all full range speakers, you won't need bass management.

I prefer this: JL Audio CR-1

Depends on how obsessive you are. Multiple, good subs with proper setup/EQ will benefit any system.

Thanks Kal for your always thorough response. I have been working on the conversion of dsf files to pcm on and off most of the day, and I have found that I have everything I need to do this even in 5.1 and 7.1 surround, in the dbpoweramp converter. All my inquiries are now satisfied. I appreciate the education.

My Pre-Amp is a stone age unit without HDMI, so the only SACD/DVD-A is through analogue. My old Denon 2900 worked less and less as time went by. 6 months ago I found and purchased a seemingly pristine used Denon 2930Ci, but it has worked less and less increasingly. The unit simply freezes.

My question is: are there inexpensive SACD/DVD-A players using analog as opposed to the HDMI?

For the record, I have a Sony X800M2, and it does play these disks. I currently use the digital audio output since I don't have HDMI inputs. The problem is, the digital audio output is not nearly as good as the Denon for one, and on one disk, in particular, I get no low bass (50hz and below) out of the tracks I most want to hear it.
Your digital output is NOT giving you SACD or DVD-A playback (unless you are listening to DVD-A in 2 channel at 24bit/96khz, like some of my discs have). To get the full effect of the Sony player you have, you MUST use HDMI.

I don't know of any current SACD/DVD-A player that plays multichannel via analogue connectors since Oppo left the market (though I've not shopped for such a machine in a while, so I may be incorrect here). There are many examples on various used audio sites like US Audio Mart or Canuck Audio Mart or Audiogon or eBay, etc. While it's a bit riskier than buying new (no warranties), there are some good deals to be had. I'm not selling mine, but I have a 16 year old Marantz DV6400 with analogue audio out for SACD/DVD-A (I bought it new in 2004) and it's still going strong. I also have a Cambridge Audio DVD99 (in a second system) that I bought used some time ago--it's also going very strong. There are options.

That takes me back... I bought one of those back in 2010 primarily because it offered an 'digital' HDMI port (as well as component video and 8-channel analogue outputs). And all just for £120.00

However, when it came to multi-channel analogue audio playback, I preferred my older Pioneer DV-575A... Right up until I bought an OPPO BDP-103.
