Bela Fleck: The Bluegrass Sessions (DVD-A 5.1)

I've read some positive reviews here and finally found a copy at a decent price. This assumes of course that the used item was properly classified in Amazon, which for me when it comes to used hi-res discs, has been pretty hit and miss lately.

Have had this since it first came out. Excellent performances and sound quality!

Love Bela (and his bandmates)....seen him numerous times numerous places (even a free show at a county fair once)...always a great show. I'll have to check this out - was unaware of it - thanks!

Well I think I'm done buying OPP used discs from Amazon. I didn't receive the Bela Fleck: The Bluegrass Sessions DVD-A but rather the HDCD with the DVD-A layer. While normally I could live with that, I just found out when I went to play the disc that my new Oppo 203 doesn't support HDCD

Actually I didn't realize the Oppo 203 didn't support HDCD. I know my previous 105 did.

Anyway, if anybody wants this HDCD for a few bucks less then what I paid send me a PM.

An "HDCD with a DVD-A layer"? As in, a CD with an MLP layer? I didn't know there was such a thing.

I'd not throw the baby out with the bath water in terms of not buying used high rez on Amazon Marketplace because of your Fleck Bluegrass Sessions experience. I had a similar experience with that same title years ago, perhaps because it's a combination of high rez and a special interest DVD-A along with perhaps some confusing marketing. But it pales in comparison to the years of excellent finds and good deals I've gotten on Marketplace.

Sometimes defensive shopping is in order. Look for smaller individual seller/collectors (you can often tell based upon item descriptions, the name of the store and the quantity of feedback). I e-mail sellers in advance to confirm that they have what I want and if they sound clueless and/or don't have access to their inventory and/or don't respond in 24 hours, I don't buy. I just looked and saw two sellers that I'd consider for this release: One has photos of the DVD-A in their listing and refers to both Super Jewel Box and the disc being a DVD-A. That's a fellow collector right there. The other also refers to DVD-A in their item description. (I also am familiar with Waterloo Records from my UT days.)

My understanding from years ago is that the HDCD metadata is being read off so encoded CDs. It's just a question of whether your AVR is recognizing it or not. I think this dates back to when Pacific Microsonics was bought by Microsoft and their branding became less conspicuous. I've kinda stopped seeing the logo on CDs but I recall guys years ago saying they were seeing their AVRs "HDCD" light illuminate sometimes on discs that weren't even labeled as such. I think the decoding shifted from players to AVRs but, again, the data is baked into that which is always already coming off of the disc: It's not my understanding that there's a way for the transport to ignore it.

In any event, if you haven't already I'd e-mail OPPO for more (definitive) info before concluding that the 203 doesn't read that data off the disc. I'd be surprised if that's true.

I've also never heard of HDCD's with a DVDA layer! Are you sure that it isn't a HDAD, with a DVDA side? The HDAD's have a DVDA side and a DVDV side and the Oppo with play both sides.

It was strange that the new Oppo's dropped support for HDCD. By the way, HDCD's are 20 bit CD's as compared to the 16 bit Redbook standard. I don't believe that there is any way to have a MLP layer on those discs.

I am in the HDAD/DVDA camp. HDCD can squeeze another 4 bits into the 44.1 stream, but the format doesn’t support MLP’s 48KHz. For that, the underlying disc must be DVD for its larger capacity.

I'm somewhat confused about this disc . Is it a dual-disc which has a CD layer on one side and the DVD-A layer on the other? If it does try flipping the disc over then put it in the 203 to play the DVD-A layer. I've never heard of an HDCD with a DVD-A on the same layer. Looking at Discogs it shows two different versions of the DVD-A and three different versions of a HDCD. No mention of a disc with both HDCD and DVD-A. Do the numbers on the disc correspond with any numbers in the link below from Discogs?

OOps!

Rip to FLAC and play the digital file. foobar2000 has an HDCD plugin that should bring all 20-bits into the FLAC.

Ok, I figured it out. The spine has the DVDA logo and the number is 9 47332-9 which according to Discogs is the DVDA.

The disc however had a HDCD logo and the number is 9 47332-2 which is the HDCD. I also put the disc in my old Oppo 83 and is played as a HDCD.

Oh well, I guess it's going back.

It doesn't just need to go back. It needs to go back with an admonition to that seller that it would appear the wrong disc has been put into the DVD-A case so that this doesn't happen to someone else. They'll probably plead ignorance and maybe they really don't know what the difference is. But that shouldn't be re-listed (which is likely what they'll do).

Depending upon how they respond to you, if you're so inclined I'd like to know who that seller is.

I "like" you post sooo much that the "Like" button was insufficient. It is inexcusable that the disc didn't match the case.

By the way, as an FYI, if your AVR/AVP can decode HDCD's, then you can have your 203 output a bitstream and listen to HDCD's, that way.

Thanks, that's good to know. I'm not sure I even have any other HDCD's which is why I was somewhat confused on the format.

Based on this post, I went ahead and purchased the Chet Atkins"Superpickers/Chet Atkins Picks The Best" SACD. I was very pleased and impressed with both the audio sound quality of the recordings and the quality of the surround mix - the rear channels could be considered an aggressive mix as individual instruments and vocals are used independently, no doubt due to the original mix being in 4.0/quad. There is a perceived audio quality difference between the first 10 selections (Superpickers) and the next 10 cuts (Chet Atkins Picks The Best) but I would still consider both to be very good quality. Even with 20 individual songs, I played the entire disc in one session, something I rarely do. When finished, I felt refreshed as the selections are light and easy to listen too. If you like this kind of music, in my opinion this is a must have to add to your collection, if you haven't already.

Just bought:

Gene Ammons - Boss Tenor APO SACD

I have the Boss Tenor XRCD and it is an excellent sounding album. Couldn't resist Music Direct's recent 20% off sale. Ordered this and preordered six other SACDs.

Sorry for the obscure post - I find this BBS software difficult to manipulate and edit as I expect. I'd be interested in hearing your comments when you're finally able to listen to Chet and his Superpickers. To be honest, you'd have to dig pretty deep to find anything he ever recorded that wasn't wonderful!

Both of them are well done. Breakaway sounds a bit sharper than Angel Clare IMHO. I'm hoping Watermark and Fate For Breakfast get the same treatment but I don't think Quad mixes of those were made.

That's good news. That particular Garfunkel album is my favourite and I've been relistening it to it lately so having it in multi channel audio would be great. Plus unlike some of the other issues in multi channel Audio it's not exorbitantly expensive.

Depending upon how they respond to you, if you're so inclined I'd like to know who that seller is.

Regarding my adventures with the Bela Fleck DVD-A. The seller was one of Goodwill stores listed in Amazon. The return process was simple and refund issued within 5 business days of me mailing it back. So all in all, pretty painless but still a hassle. This is the second wrong item I've received from a Goodwill store, so for sure I'm done buying used product from them.

Anyway, as happens so many times in life, as one door closes another one opens. I just snagged a copy from a reputable seller for $3 less and what I assume will be in better condition as well.
